A better volume than the last. Interesting changes in this one, not sure why they didn’t have Jonouchi battle Yugi in the manga, but did have them duel in the anime. Tbh it does make sense for Yugi to just duel Pegasus because Jonouchi will never win against Yugi, but there’s been a whole arc about Jonouchi growing so for his storyline it does make sense for him to duel Yugi even if he won’t win. Idk I can see pros and cons to each of them, but I think I like the manga version more.

Excited to see what differences there are going forward now. After the last volume I was considering not reading the manga anymore but this volume renewed my interest.

This is the best one so far for sure. It felt like there where stakes and one of the most engaging due to how good of a villain Pegasus turned out to be. His cards were really unique and interesting and they made it to more fun since they connected to his personality. Although the rules were kind of convenient at times it still did not take away from the strategy and good writing to make the action moments more appealing and entertaining. I have grown to really like these characters especially the new ones that were introduced in this story arc. I don’t know where the story is heading but I sure hope that all the same characters return to make a second appearance. It’s always great when a series improves over time which is exactly what I am feeling with this one.

This continues to be a fun fluff series. Maybe I should be reading more serious literature than this, but serious literature doesn't have monster guys in it.

"Someday I'm going to be stronger... Strong enough not to lose to the Other Me...!"
Oh shit, does he know?

I thought I'd read a chunk of this manga before, twenty years ago, but maybe not as much as I assumed. That is, I totally didn't remember SKIPPING THE FIGHT BETWEEN YUGI AND JONOUCHI. What the fuck. Dark Sage was non-canon this whole time?! Damn! Anyway, I get the idea Takahashi is going for, but... I don't know, man. The way Dark Yugi explains it is kinda fucked. So Jonouchi fought hard to get where he is, and considers his duel against Keith to be his true final fight. Yugi says he doesn't want to show Pegasus too much of his strategy, and he wants to fight for Jonouchi and his sister. But... it sounds like Yugi is partly saying he doesn't trust Jonouchi to have the strength to challenge Pegasus himself. Like, it's a waste of time to duel Jonouchi because it's a guaranteed victory for Dark Yugi and will just drag out the time it would take to get to Pegasus, beat him, free the captive souls, and get the prize money for Shizuka. In so many words, "You're not going to beat me anyway, so you may as well let me skip straight to Pegasus."

Honestly, I kind of like the censored 4Kids version of Barrel Dragon better than the original. I'm too used to the glowing blue railguns.

****

Volume 13: Kaiba takes all Yugi's Chips and moves into Pegasus's castle. Mai arrives with extra Chips to repay Yugi. The four finalists are: Bandit Keith, Jonouchi, Mai, and Yugi. Kaiba learns Mokuba's soul was trapped in a card. Kaiba versus Pegasus. Pegasus wins with Toon World, Dragon Capture Jar, and a Doppelganger to copy Kaiba's Crush Card. Kaiba's soul is sealed in a card as well. Yugi sees a portrait of Shadi in Pegasus's dining room, hinting at some secret to the Millennium Items. The Honor of the King's Right and Left are required to enter the finals; Jonouchi and Keith don't have the cards, so Yugi gives the Right one to Jonouchi, which Keith steals at night. Honda goes searching for the Kaiba brothers' bodies, is captured by a guard, and freed by Dark Bakura. Yugi versus Mai begins. Mai defeats Gaia the Fierce Knight using Mirror Wall and Cyber Bondage to debuff Gaia and buff Harpy Lady. Volume end.

Volume 14: Yugi versus Mai, continued. Mai fucks Yugi up with Harpy's Feather Duster, Harpy's Pet Dragon, Electro-Whip, Shadow of Eyes, and the continuous Mirror Wall. She teaches Yugi the pride of a Duelist in not being afraid to lose, which Dark Yugi realizes is held by his light side. Yugi was distracted by his desire to beat Pegasus, but Mai helps him focus on the duel at hand. Yugi uses Brain Control on Pet Dragon to launch it at Mirror Wall with Catapult Turtle. Mai brings Pet Dragon back with Monster Reborn and powers him up with Kaleidoscope to multiply Harpy Lady, but Yugi wins with Black Luster Soldier. Jonouchi is almost disqualified because of the stolen Honor card, but Mai gives him hers. Jonouchi versus Keith. Keith's Machines are immune to magical attacks. Keith uses Metalmorph on Zoa, but Jonouchi saves his own ass with Chasm of Spikes. Keith gets out Barrel Dragon, Jonouchi gets Time Wizard. Time Wizard rusts Barrel Dragon and evolves Baby Dragon, but Keith recovers Barrel Dragon with Time Machine, defeating Thousand Dragon. Jonouchi gets Red-Eyes and uses Copycat on Metalmorph to have Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon defeat Barrel Dragon. Keith steals Shield and Sword so Slot Machine will be stronger than REBMD, but Jonouchi's Graverobber steals Time Machine to restore REBMD to his buffed ATK, winning the game. Volume end.

Volume 15: Dark Yugi asks Jonouchi to drop out of the finals so he can go straight to the last boss: Pegasus. Pegasus does a Penalty Game on Keith to make him kill himself. Pegasus uses the Millennium Eye to read Yugi's strategies, then starts fucking him up with Toon World. Pegasus uses Gorgon's Eye to force Yugi to play Monsters in ATK position and make them fight his Toons, and uses Doppelganger to copy Summoned Skull into a Toon. Dark Yugi hides Dark Magician in Magical Hats, then switches to normal Yugi so Pegasus misreads DM's location. Pegasus uses Magic Neutralizing Force on Magical Hats, but Yugi uses Living Arrow to reuse MNF on Toon World, plus Mirror Force to stop Toon Summoned Skull from killing DM, and killing the Toons in the process. Pegasus foreshadows the Millennium World arc, then activates a Shadow Game which draws on the players' stamina. Normal Yugi struggles to stay conscious while Pegasus fucks shit up with Relinquished. The Power of Friendship allows Dark Yugi to mask his cards from the Millennium Eye while normal Yugi is out of the game. Dark Yugi uses Brain Control on Relinquished to summon Magician of Black Chaos. Pegasus evolves Relinquished into Thousand-Eyes Restrict, buy Yugi's Kuriboh-Multiply combo shuts him down, and MoBC wins the game. Pegasus gives a backstory of his Eye, the Millennium Items, and the Tablet of the Pharaoh's Memories. One of Pegasus's dudes theorizes Pegasus wanted KaibaCorp to use Duel Disk technology for a hologram of his dead lover. Dark Bakura kills Pegasus and takes the Eye. Everyone leaves Duelist Kingdom. Volume end.

I was looking forward to the Jounouchi and Yugi duel but I know that will come at some point in the manga. Overall, another enjoyable volume and I'm looking forward to getting through the rest of them!

I forgot how dark these could get. It’s hinted at in the tv show but I would definitely put them in different age ranges.

Still a great manga and I can’t wait to read the rest of them!

A great ending to duelist kingdom, and "two down five to go" was rather chilling.
