Scarlet and Liall set out with the king’s army on a perilous journey to the frozen heart of Rshan. As Scarlet’s fabled magic begins to change, Liall places their entwined fates into the hands of those who covet magic above all else, but will they save Scarlet or enslave him?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original Review:
I just spent most of the day reading The Temple Road. I'm sweating and icky from the summer heat and writing this review while my brain is telling me NOPE while listening to Call of Silence by Gemie while thinking about Liall and Scarlet and I...just...can't.
But I'll try.
Warning for spoilers of the series up to this point. No spoilers for The Temple Road itself though.
A lot happens here in terms of "things" happening (sorry for the wordy sentence). Just as the title suggests, the adventure takes place mostly on the Temple Road while Liall is trying to direct Scarlet towards Ged Fanorl under directions from Ulan. In a way, not much progression is done in the overall main "myth" plot. However, the author does a great job building onto an already rich world with the sights we see on this adventure that it didn't bother me one bit.
The Temple Road really shines when it comes to further development between Liall and Scarlet. It's endearing how one's thoughts always tend to orbit around the other; it's a type of dependency that really speaks to the romantic in me. While on the surface, it might not seem like much development (since "I love you" tends to be end game in most romance), what you really see is just how far Liall would really go for his redbird. These actions really show a dichotomy in Liall - the ruthless king to the Rshani, but a tender wolf to Scarlet. In a way, this book is definitely Liall-centric in that sense. And gosh, there were moments that really broke my heart and had me crying some salty man tears.
If there was one thing I have to criticize about this book, it would be its proofreading. I normally wouldn't mention it if it were minor mistakes, but I did notice quite a bit of proofreading mistakes that littered the book (which really shocked me, since all the entries prior didn't have this problem). It did jar me out of some moments, but luckily didn't happen during key dialogue or emotional scenes.
Overall, I really really love The Temple Road. It was adventurous, romantic, dark and gritty and gave me more insight into Liall. I'm not one to hand out many five star reviews, but it's very rare for many books to push my emotional spectrum as Liall and Scarlet do.
It should not take almost 10 years between books in a series so until this book is given at least a release date, I'm giving it a single star. The review will change depending on if it takes another year, or another large gap like the EIGHT YEARS between books 3 and 4.
Damn, this is the first time this year that i read a book in less than 3 days or even in less than a week ;-; i don't recognize myself lol.
But honestly, honestly??? this was so good, i was hooked from the start. At first i was a bit lost bc it's been 3 years since the last book, i remembered bits but not all of it but the first chapters themselves explained what was going on so i'm glad for that. As the title says, this book is about Liall, Scarlet, and the army going to the mountains crossing the temple road, it's a slow hella cold journey and there's treachery and secrets to unfold along the way. Poor Scarlet, and Liall...ugh, sometimes i feel his love for Scarlet borders into obsession so part of me is with Alexyin and Jochi, but other part is like "fuck royalty rules!! you go Liall, not let anyone take your t'aishka away from you". I'm torn.
And that ending tho...(;´∩`;)゚...not to be annoying, i know good stories take time and whatnot, but i hope the next book doesn't take another 3 years or more _(:3」∠)_
After reading the book I am happy where this continuation is going. I noticed a few background changes but itching too insane. The big one was about Scarlet’s mothers being sisters. I reread the entire series again before starting in on this book so maybe things like that were just me noticing. A few other small things had me checking back to make sure I was remembering it correctly.
Overall this is a connecting book. It moves the characters into position for the next part. Hopefully we do not have to wait very long.
A big part of the action in this story revolves around the Rshan and their treatment of Scarlet. The best the Rshani believe about Scarlet is that he is a plaything for the king, but with rare exception, most Rshani characters treat Scarlet either as a soulless non-human or a blackguard because of the magic he possess. I think this hits the nail on the head depressingly well given the social climate of America in recent years. There is a scene towards the end where Liall is trying to explain how one of his subject’s actions constitutes treason and the Rshani he is speaking to never really understands. Even after a whole book’s worth of watching Liall attempt various routes towards giving Scarlet agency and legitimacy in Rshan, it wasn’t until this scene that Liall gets a true inkling of the kind of prejudice Scarlet has faced. In other words, Liall realizes that no amount of good will or patience or explanation or drastic measures will turn the hearts and minds of Rshani to Scarlet’s favor.
I finished this book in a state of extreme anxiety because it ends on an unbelievable cliffhanger and there's no publication date for book 6. I have really enjoyed this series - it's exactly my favourite kind of story: an imperious powerful man becomes devoted to someone who is very different from himself, the start of their relationship rocky and contentious, but he sweeps said person off his feet and action/adventure/drama ensues. Things are getting really, really, real for Scarlet and Liall now that Liall's reign is established but unstable, and Liall marches to war, learns some shocking things, and has some hard decisions to make. Liall I love, but Scarlet is the reason that I can't bring myself to give this 5 stars. Homeboy just can't read a room, he does really dumb things again and again and again. I know he is obviously integral to the story but as a person I'm not the biggest fan. Overall though, this series has been an epic fantasy/adventure/romance and I am dying for the final book.
Another adventuous book! My heart ached for these to wonderful men. Will Liall and Scarlet ever be able to have a life together without all the betrayal, deceit, backstabbing, and insults they recieve about being together?
Two things keeping them in turmoil, first Scarlet's from the Hilurun race, called a lenilyn in the eyes of the Rshans, a non-person that has magic where the King is from the true Camira-Druz bloodline. But secondly, all the barons want the King to have an heir; that is something Scarlet can not give his king.
These two men are destined to be together. they're stronger together and there are many who continue to try and kill the Kings true, forever love - Scarlet.
Now if book 6 would come out I could continue on with where the journey is taking them. I do pray that they have their HEA
Honestly, I'm js in tears rn. The book was splendid. Every paragraph written with deep thoughts and beautiful words. I'm not the type of person to write reviews, and I won't but I'm js so much touched and shaken by this series, in a good way. This has literally become my favourite series, all night and day I's just be thinking about it. I am so in love with Scarlet and Liall, their romance, interactions, and how they overcome all their problems is just everything to me. But what makes me cry is.. I really wanna know when Book 6 is coming. I know i must be patient, considering I just read it. But I already cannot wait. I'm sure Book 6 is gonna be awesome as well! I'm actually glad I sat there in the cafeteria a month ago, searching for a free online read of this series. I js wouldn't give up and I finally found a site which helped me read the whole thing. It's js amazing. Kirby is js amazing. Can't wait for the next book <3
Man...after so many years...it is here. Finally. I loved this book. I loved the characters. I hated the waiting. But it was worth it (hope i won’t have to wait years for the last one). I had a bit of a problem with all the secrets the Scarlet and Liall kept from each other, but it made sense...fear and love are two great motivators. Well done Kirby Crow. And please, please, pretty please...hurry with the last book.
It’s a shame that it is an incomplete work that probably will never see its HEA. The author is slow on publishing new volumes. That’s why I am giving it a 3 instead of 4 stars. As I would not recommend it for being incomplete and without any clue or statement from the author when a new volume would be published.
This book felt like it dragged on to me. The one thing I thought was going to happen, them going to the sacred place of the shining ones or whatever to figure out Scarlet’s magic and such, did not happen. After five books I think I may be done with this series even though there is supposedly going to be another, which there should be since things that were hinted at two books ago still haven’t happened.
