Gemma Haverford knows exactly who she will marry: James Randolph, the man she’s had a secret understanding with for the last eleven years. With every letter written between them while he's been off at sea, their love has grown. Now they will be reunited with his return to England.
There’s just one problem. The man whose words she'd fallen in love with isn’t James at all…
Jasper Holland, a gentleman rogue of the first order, is trapped. Talked into a scheme by his best friend, he pretended to be James for eleven years as he wrote to Gemma, even though he'd promised James he’d break it off. But now with his return to England, his secret will come out—and he’ll lose the one woman he can’t live without.
What began as a game of words, now becomes a game of hearts, and Jasper will pay any price to call Gemma his.

4 - "I never used to get faint until you showed up." Stars!
There is one thing that I can whole heartedly say about Lauren Smith and the books that she writes, that no matter what the genre or tropes used they are always entertaining. I am not a massive historical fiction reader nowadays (although I had a sizeable Harlequin collection in my younger years) but the way the author tells the story, just pulls you in and keeps you invested in the characters and the adventures they go on.
I loved Gemma and Jasper together, and as usual Lauren has given her heroine a bit of back-bone underneath her corset! Not the shy retiring type, she stands up to him, and when she discovers just how mislead she has been by him and James, and doesn’t give him an easy out in his courtship of her.
”I can’t concentrate when you are touching me.”
Although only a novella, the author has also managed to give a full and detailed backstory to both of our lead characters, and Jasper’s was particularly poignant in light of his experiences at sea over the intervening eleven years.
”I’m not good at being respectable. I say things I shouldn’t.”
Plenty of sizzle and sexy-times, make this novella another absolutely stellar addition to Lauren Smiths Historical titles.

3.5 "Pen Pal Love" for the Story and 4.5 Stars for the Narration!
If you are looking for a short and sweet historical romance to listen to, then Tempted by a Rogue may just be the right temptation for your next listen. As is frequently the case in a novella length romance, the plot is quick and to the point, but lovers of best friend love triangles, will enjoy getting to root for the underdog and the ultimate resolution. Moreover, Carolyn Morris' talented performance makes this audiobook a pleasure to listen to.
Gemma Haverford has been pining, and waiting for, James Randolph's return for 11 years. Over all those years she has refused to even consider marrying anyone else, resolute in their shared promise that James would marry her upon his return (even if that return is taking years longer than expected). Further solidifying her resolve were the countless letters that she believed they exchanged over the years which further reinforced her love for her pen pal lover.
Little did Gemma know, that for the greater part of that more than a decade, it was actually James' best friend, Jasper Holland--a mutual childhood friend who took great pleasure in taunting her--that actually took on the "chore" of writing those letters. Try though he might, and even after he promised James that he would, Jasper never could find the words to let Gemma know that James had long tired of their long-distance relationship. In fact, quite to the contrary, he found himself longing for each and every shared letter.
However, the time of reckoning has finally come, as James and Jasper are returning to England. After pretending to be James for 11 years how will Jasper explain this deception? Will his deception cause him to lose everything that he has begun to hope and pray for?
Carolyn Morris did a superb job of bringing this story to life. Not only did Ms. Morris render a believable, male voice for Jasper (a feat that many female narrators struggle with); but she also managed to conjure an equally appropriate and personality specific one for James. Ms. Morris' rendition made it seamless to determine who the listener should root for to win Gemma's heart in the end.
Ms. Morris' characterization of Gemma was also very well done. Her naive and somewhat idealistic nature was easily discernible from Ms. Morris' expert intonation. Additionally, Ms. Morris did a great job of communicating her conflicted feelings and ultimately the romantic connection between Gemma and the hero.
All in all, Tempted by a Rogue is the perfect listen if you are looking for a well-performed quick and short historical romance that you can experience in one or two sittings. However, as is typical with novellas, you may have to suspend belief at a few of the conflict resolution points as is frequently necessarily the case when the resolution must occur with brevity. I will say that I previously read and adored Lauren Smith's debut full-length novel, Wicked Intentions, so I will definitely be up for experiencing more of her works in the future. And Carolyn Morris' enjoyable performance will definitely keep me searching for more of her works as well.

Lauren Smith’s novella,Tempted by a Rogue has exactly two things going for it. First – it is narrated by the excellent Carolyn Morris, whose name has been woefully absent among the lists of new audiobook historical romances over the past year or so; and second – it’s short. Mind you, at around three hours and fifteen minutes, it’s not short enough, because by the half way mark the inconsistencies in the storytelling and characterisation had become so annoying that I struggled to finish it.
The premise of the story – that the hero and heroine have corresponded regularly for a decade and have fallen in love with each other through their letters – is one I normally enjoy. I like a good epistolary novel, or at least one in which letter-writing plays an important role, so I was well-disposed towards the novella from the outset. Add in the fact that the funny, tender and heartfelt correspondence has NOT been written by the man the heroine thinks has been writing to her, and the stage is set for a Cyrano de Bergerac-esque tale, which made Tempted by a Rogue an even more attractive prospect.
The story opens with Miss Gemma Haverford eagerly awaiting a rendezvous with her childhood sweetheart, James Randolph, with whom she has had an understanding since he went away to sea eleven years previously. Unfortunately, however, while absence – and his letters – has made Gemma’s heart grow fonder, within a year of his going away, James decided he was having too much fun with other women to want to settle down. After having penned a few half-hearted letters to his betrothed, James asked his best friend, Jasper Holland, to write her a few letters (pretending to be him), and then break things off with her. (Side note – ELEVEN YEARS? She’s written to the man and waited for him for eleven years during which time he’s never once come home? How dumb is this girl that she can believe a bloke who’s never bothered to come and see her in eleven years actually WANTS to marry her?!)
Gemma’s artless, affectionate responses to Jasper’s letters affected him so much that he found it impossible to break her heart and continued to write to her over the next decade. The problem is that Gemma still believes herself engaged to James, and, given that it is not the done thing for a gentleman to break a betrothal, James needs a way out, especially as he has found another lady he wants to marry. So he calls in a favour and asks Jasper to compromise Gemma so that he (James) can then cry off in outrage. The fact that Gemma’s reputation will be ruined is of no concern to James, but even though Jasper is appalled at the thought, he owes James his life and can’t refuse to do this for him.
That’s the set up, and not much happens after that. Jasper arranges to meet Gemma late one evening in the garden. Blindfolding her to make sure she doesn’t realise he isn’t James, the couple exchange some passionate kisses and she lets him put his hand up her dress. The next day at an afternoon party, James repudiates Gemma when she innocently asks him if he’d paid her a visit the previous evening. And to makes things worse, she recognises the voice of the man who HAD visited her as that of his friend, Jasper Holland. Mortified, confused and dejected, she runs off, with Jasper in hot pursuit.
The rest of the story is taken up with much to-ing and fro-ing on the part of Gemma and Jasper, and quite honestly, I not only lost track of what they were thinking and why, I lost interest, because none of it made sense. One minute, she loves James, the next she wants Jasper. Not long after she flees the party, they’re shagging each other’s brains out in the potting shed (ick), and then he’s deciding that he daren’t hope for a relationship with her, not so soon after her heart has been broken. I would venture to say that that thought should have occurred to him BEFORE he let his garden hose out to play. And then later, when they’ve re-joined the party and Gemma has decided she’s furious with Jasper, she suddenly starts flirting with him and making suggestive comments. I felt like I was like watching the Chinese Olympic Ping-Pong team.
This is one of those times when even the most experienced narrator – and I count Carolyn Morris as one of their number – can’t save a poorly executed story. The cast of characters isn’t large, but she differentiates well between James and Jasper, giving the former a rather supercilious drawl which immediately alerts the listener to the fact that the guy isn’t hero material. The stentorian dowager who calls everyone by their last name and goes around poking people with her parasol sounds appropriately formidable, and her portrayal of Gemma is suitably youthful and charming. Ms Morris performs the narration at a good pace, and imbues the story with the right amount of emotion, but as I’ve said, even she can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.
Now she’s returned to the world of audiobook narration, I am hoping to listen to her again very soon and hopefully in something much more concomitant with her talent.
She thinks she's in love with his best friend when he is the man behind the powerful letters they exchange the whole time he is at sea. However, now Jasper Holland is come home. How will he ever get Gemma to love him after all the lies. Because the letters weren't a lie...
Oh, the trouble we weave... Jasper was an interesting character combining the lying and his propensity to misplaced loyalty. I so wanted to smack him for being an idiot and hurting the sweet, innocent woman he loves. Fortunately, I don't have to because Miss Gemma was no wilted flower. This ginger beauty showed some fire and brought big, sexy Jasper to his knees and begging for her to forgive him. They shared alternating narration and a strong mutual attraction even as Jasper's lies and machinations come out. Gemma isn't the staid maidenly type she appears.
I would have liked more development, but this was more quick, hot, and ready to serve now style. For that, it was just right.
This story was fast and on the shorter side and was a little different than I expected, but its perfect if you want a one-sitting read that offers a scorching hot historical romance.
My thanks to the author for providing this book in exchange for an honest review.
Short and Sweet! Outstanding Narration by Carolyn Morris! (audible review)
This was a really good little novella. I enjoyed it. I really liked Jasper, he was pretty awesome. He was handsome, strong, and sweet. He really fell hard for Gemma. I liked Gemma too. She was a strong female heroine, not a whiny simpering one. The chemistry between these two was great, it felt real and genuine. There was a couple of nicely written hot and steamy sexual scenes.
The story line and plot was good. The story flowed very well and it was easy to follow along. There was not very much dialogue. I did miss that for sure, but what little dialogue there was, was good.
As for the narration. It was fantastic. I am a huge fan of Carolyn Morris. She does such a great job. The men sound like men, the hero sounded sexy. All the characters have their own distinct voice. She reads with emotion as called for in the story. Her reading voice is wonderful and she is a pleasure to listen to. I would be happy if she narrated all Historical Romance books! She is perfect for them.
Oh this romance was short, sweet, seductive and so romantic!
Gemma Haverford has been waiting about ten years for her childhood sweetheart James to return from the Navy as they have been writing letter to each other these long years. However, James' best friend Jasper is actually the one who has been writing to her. Jasper has all intents of making Gemma his when he returns with James. With Gemma still thinking James has been writing love letters to her, Gemma is in love with "James" so what will Jasper do to confess and make Gemma his? Read this amazing novella to find out.
I love Jasper! He just makes me swoon. I felt so bad for Gemma knowing her heart was going to break one way or another. However, Jasper and Gemma work things out and they have a wonderfully beautiful love for each other. James is a coldhearted prick and an idiot, just saying. Gemma's father is so sweet and understanding. I wish this book was longer so I can see what happens for James because I hope he gets his just desserts while Gemma and Jasper are perfectly happy together.
Gemma has been exchanging letters with her childhood sweetheart James for the past 11 years, while he was off at sea. She has no idea that it's actually James's best friend Jasper who's been responding to her letters this entire time.
UGH this novella had so much potential. The tropes are there and the set up is delicious. But everything is just so chaotic. Instead of just coming clean with Gemma, the hero and his friend come up with the stupidest plan which will have serious consequences for Gemma. But they don't seem to care because Jasper will be there to save her reputation. Even though he's been lying to her and has decided to continue lying to her 🤥
Gemma is also all over the place, changing personality back and forth 🤪 Jasper was better characterized compared to Gemma, but his continued deception made him unlikable. Not to mention, a random old lady from the neighbourhood conveniently figured out EVERYTHING just so she could motivate Jasper to go after Gemma. It's all so chaotic.
I'm being generous with my 2 star rating because there are indeed some really good moments and scenes in the story. But overall, this novella was just too chaotic and would have benefited from more rigorous editing.
Tempted by a Rogue by Lauren Smith is the story of Gemma who has waited for eleven years to reunite with her childhood sweetheart, James. They have been communicating through letters all these years that she is sure now that he is here, they will me married soon. But things are not quite as simple as they look. James is not interested in Gemma and the person writing to her is not him but his friend, Jasper who likes Gemma and hopes to marry her someday.
With everything so confusing, will Gemma ever have her happily-ever-after?
I enjoyed reading Lauren's book, The Duelist's Seduction and when she offered me this one, her upcoming book, I was more than happy to read and review it!
The cover is sensual and promises a sensual story. The blurb is interesting and it succeeds in intriguing the readers about the book.
It was the plot idea that intrigued me in the first place. The idea of writing love letters to each other without meeting for over a decade is romantic and add the identity swap to it and the book had me eager to read it. I hoped for a conflict filled story with headstrong characters and an intense romance. While I got a headstrong hero and a sensual romance, the story didn't match my expectations but nevertheless, it is a good story, is light, short, enjoyable and a quick read.
Lauren's writing style is engaging and despite her simple construction of sentences, she manages to prove her prowess of writing and yet again establishes that expression and narration is not hampered by simplicity!
She creates the Regency era well and overall, I was transported to a different time through the book. It is only in certain situations that I felt like the characters seemed too progressive and open for a time when propriety and manners were everything. Like for example, when Gemma's father hints at knowing of his daughter's "gallivanting in the garden" escapades and yet tells his wife that it's okay etc. (I don't want to disclose too much about the story.)
The characters are likable and realistic people and I could visualize them easily. Gemma is a simple country girl happy in her simple surroundings and in love with a boy she hasn't met in over a decade. Her honest hopes, expressions and emotions had me connecting with her and then feeling sorry and angry on her behalf. I rooted for a happily-ever-after for her and was all smiles when she got one!
James is portrayed as a reckless, unlikable character and I felt like slapping him for his blatant disregard to Gemma's emotions and his crude and impersonal talks about her virtue and life, as if she meant nothing and was not even a human let alone a girl he had been friends with in his childhood! I am eager to read James' story too and hope he gets a taste of his own medicine in it.
Jasper is a strong character and I liked him but initially, his talks with James about Gemma had me feeling like I wanted a another hero for my honest heroine. LOL Later on, he becomes the likable hero we all adore who in turn, adores the heroine and is willing to do anything to win her affection. He is flirty, intense, naughty with Gemma and their attraction is scorching hot!
"I never used to get faint until you showed up." -Gemma
Gemma's parents are lovely people and I especially liked her father who knows everything and yet is willing to give his daughter freedom.
Lady Greenley is funny, strict and totally adorable with her knowing and mischievous eyes. I loved her interactions with the protagonists and hope to meet her again!
The story is fast paced with intense intimate scenes and a quick read that you'll be able to finish within an hour if you are a fast reader like me. :)
All in all, Tempted by a Rogue by Lauren Smith is an enjoyable, naughty, sultry and quick read that takes us on a journey to the Regency era to witness a mischievous seduction of a heroine by a rogue with a heartwarming happily-ever-after! 4 out of 5 to it and recommended to all romance lovers above the age of eighteen.
I enjoy Lauren's writing and look forward to reading more from her in the future.
I received an ARC from the author and I am very thankful to her. The above review is my honest and unbiased opinion and in no way influenced.
THEY WENT TO A GARDEN PARTY... BUT IT WASN'T THE NORMAL FARE!
This review is from: Tempted By A Rogue (Kindle Edition) by Lauren Smith
Gemma Haverford is in love, and has been for over eleven years. But her courtship has been a little unusual. It's with her childhood sweetheart, who with his best friend Jasper Holland, enlisted in His Majesty's Navy as young midshipmen. For eleven years they were making their fortunes and now they are coming home. James Randolph asked her to wait on him before he left. His letters kept that love and her hope alive. Only ...Gemma doesn't know that James didn't write the letters. Jasper did.
James began to enjoy the women that the different ports gave him access to and decided that he no longer wants to honor his arrangement with Gemma. He asked Jasper to pretend to be he and write Gemma breaking the arrangement. Only Jasper finds he cannot. Jasper and Gemma keep writing and the letters become more regular. He finds he cares about Gemma. He carries her letters with him into battle. She is his angel.
When James finds out Jasper didn't break off the agreement he gets angry. James has made other plans for marriage and doesn't want this relationship to snag his plans. He devises a plan to change Gemma's circumstances. Jasper is supposed to meet tonight and compromise her. She is to think it is James. Tomorrow when they see each other at the Garden Party, James plans to accuse her of being with another man so he can break off the understanding. He will be free to become engaged to another. The whole thing makes Jason sick.
Gemma and Jasper meet, and Gemma has agreed to wear a blindfold when they meet. She never takes it off. Sparks fly. Jasper finds he cannot thoroughly compromise her.
The next day at the Garden Party Gemma finally sees James and when he kisses her, she realizes there are no sparks-not like the night before. Also, his voice is different. When she hears Jasper's voice, she realizes that she was with another man-THIS man. When she lets James know- he breaks up with her. Broken, she runs. Jasper takes off after her. Sparks again fly when Jasper corners her in an empty garden shed.
This is a sweet romance set in the Regency period. Lauren Smith does a thorough job with her main and secondary characters' development. Her storyline is cute and the pace of the story is quick and well thought out. It is a quick read. I found it well written.
Long distance relationships are difficult at best, but the relationship between Gemma Haverford and James Randolph only seems to get better and better. He has been off sailing the world and sending letters to his secret love for years. The letters back and forth between the two have kept Gemma company in the lonely hours and kept her dreaming of the day he would come home! Finally, that day has arrived! She is so excited when she gets a strange message to meet him in the garden with a blindfold on. She thinks it odd, but does as he wishes anyway. The outcome of this meeting changes the entire relationship she thought she had!
This was a wonderfully written story! I felt for both Gemma and Jasper. They knew each other like no other, but Gemma thought it was James the whole time. the scenery descriptions were lush and wonderful, bringing the reader into the garden or wherever the setting was. I was hooked from the start of this book and did not want to put it down!
Highly recommend this author! All of the books by her that I've read were fantastic!
While historical romances are not my favorite genre of books, I do enjoy an occasional one. And this one, Tempted By a Rogue by Lauren Smith had an updated feel that I instantly took to.
Gemma Haverford had been writing to the love of her life – James Randolph – for eleven years. With every letter, she feel a little more in love. She has waited for his return from England where he where he has been off at sea.
What Gemma does not know is that James has not been writing to her. James has had his best friend Jasper Holland writing Gemma. Jasper has fallen for Gemma over time and does not want to hurt her. With the men returning to England, James has told Jasper to break it off with Gemma but Jasper doesn’t want to hurt – or lose – the woman he loves.
This is a true love story that stands the test of time. Whether you love historical romances or not, this is a must read.
Gemma has loved her sweetheart since she was young . She has been saving herself for James to come back from the Navy. That is why anytime a bachelor has asked for her hand she always said "NO". It has been 10 years since James and his best friend Jasper left . Now they are back . Gemma is soooo excited. She has agreed to meet James in the Garden at night with a blindfold so she can't see him till tomorrow . Little does she knows that both Jasper and James have come up with a plan to get James out of making Emma his wife . Grab it and see how they do it . Can't tell you to much you need to read it by your self. And see does Emma herself teach them a lesson. Once she finds out the truth who wins her heart
This story had potential....the reason it failed to be a five star was because the author makes everything happen in a 24 hour window....not realistic....I mean how could the heroine be furious with the guy and one moment and play games and laugh and joke the next? The elderly character was just forced...and not charming at all...she should have revealed some of the letters written between them....but the biggest turn off was the stupidity of the main character and his complete disregard for the h's feelings...also he keeps thinking that his whole world revolves around the h but he doesn't think he is in love with her...he just cares for her....ummmm what???? Why do writers feel it necessary for their characters to deny their love until the last page annoying!
I loved this story! Emma was such a romantic and what a snake James turned out to be!! I was so happy she had Jasper! He was a much better rogue! I got a kick out of her father telling him when he could find the time to come out from behind her bed come down and discuss her dowry!! That was a very cute and clever scene that made me smile! Great book I would recommend this book to everyone!!
Cute, sexy, sweet and romantic - a perfect read for an afternoon! Even though it's a novella, there is plenty of background information to form a history between the characters. Jasper and Gemma are perfect together, I really felt their attraction as well as their feeling for each other. Lady Greenley and Gemma's dad were both unique and fun characters that had me smiling.
I received an ARC for the purpose of an honest review. I was not compensated for this review, all conclusions are my own.
Lauren Smith has done it again. No matter which one of her books I pick up I am always happy I did. I loved Jasper, he is absolutely wonderful and I definitely wanted to punch James. I'm just glad she saw through to the real situation before it was too late. Please do yourself a favor and read this book!
FIRST THOUGHTS: Let's just say this is 3.25 stars, particularly for the humor! In the vein of some of my favorite HR series, like the Bridgertons and Hathaways, this novella is a delight. I really liked Jasper right from the start (he's just my type), and Gemma did grow on me. Cute read!
What starts as not wanting to hurt a Lady’s feelings and helping a friend, turns into a gentleman having to step up his game.
After a decade of corresponding by letters both Gemma Haverford and Jasper Holland are once again in the same place at the same time. The problem is Gemma thinks she is in love with James Randolph, who is a snake of a man with really no redeeming characteristics I could see. Jasper is not sure what he feels for Gemma is love, he just knows that he cares very deeply for her. This whole story takes place in just a few days and I liked that it was short and there was not a lot of time for Gemma and Jasper to vacillate about their feelings. There was some question for each of them, but they each figured out where their hearts were. The characters were well developed leaving you satisfied with their love. It was also nice to know that karma will get James in the end. This is a wonderful novella that shows tenacity and honesty can lead to your HEA.
Once again, Ms Smith brings a lovely story filled with emotion, great characters and a lovely secondary character in Lady Greenley. Thank you for a very enjoyable afternoon.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I listened to this on Audiobook courtesy of Caroline Morris the narrator after I mentioned how much I liked her reading of a Tessa Dare novel. I listen to quite a lot of historical romance and it was lovely to have a fresh, young sounding voice. She did a great job differentiating the different characters also.
The story itself was very enjoyable. Who doesn't love a case of mistaken identity romance. It was a novella so we don't get a great deal of depth but it was a fun read to while away a long road trip.
Gemma has been writing to James for eleven years and in those days it was tantamount to a declaration. What was a teenage crush with a very young girl has matured into something more. The only problem is that James asked his friend Jasper to give her the flick but Jasper kept writing, year after year.
This was a sweet story, with some warmish bits. I liked the premise and the story was easy and fun.
Gemma is on cloud nine when she finds out that the man she has loved since she was a young girl is coming home after over 10 years away. Trouble is the person she has fallen in love with and who also has fallen in love with her is not the man she thinks. Jasper starts writing to Gemma as a favor to his friend James and what started as a simple plan turns into something much larger when Jasper falls in love with Gemma. When it comes time for James to return what will happen when the truth comes out and what is Jasper willing to do to make his dream woman his? I thought this story was very well put together and the characters made you love and hate them at times. Loved how what started out as a simple way to get rid of a woman turns into so much more. I am not a huge fan of historical romance, but this one changed my mind.
How anyone could not be tempted and surrender to a story by Lauren Smith is beyond me! This author's latest novella, Tempted by a Rogue, was passionate and sweet with a bit of emotional ouch thrown in. Ms. Smith has a gift for showing the not so flattering side of her characters and yet still making them appealing. A hero whose actions on the surface were despicable, but upon further discovery prove him to be a worthy suitor, and the ultimate loyal heroine set the scene for a hard earned love. This novella is a great way to spend an evening and experience a touching story.
Poor Gemma she believes her true love his her childhood crush James, but not is all as it seems. Jasper has been duping Gemma, but how does he come clean before it's too late. Gemma has a secret tryst in the garden with her admirer, but she's in for a big surprise when she finds out who it really is. As you read along in this book you quickly realize out of James and Jasper who is the real hero material. Can Gemma forgive being duped or will she let the chance for love slip through her fingers? Jasper has some groveling in his future.
A nice short novella that was entertaining and did not fall flat as most short reads do.
The chemistry between Jasper and Gemma is sweet but watching them both discover that it is love that they first felt through all those years and written letters was beautiful. The nice use of humor and witt keep the story full of enjoyment.
The story brings to mind a certain man in disguise with a big nose trying to win his love...This was a nice take on a classic romantic tale. The author writes with such joy and creates vivid wonderful characters.
This is the perfect quick, sensuous read in a wonderfully written historical setting! I love the plot centered around a misidentification. Jasper is the best- the sexiest rogue ever. Gemma melts with his touch but somehow remains a lady. Love Lady Greenley-she made me laugh out loud!
Lauren Smith is one of my faves, and Tempted by a Rogue is a perfect novella to check out her style. True romance readers will love this book!
. . . 🥰 Happy reading, and until the next reading. . . 😘
