The author of over 80 books in a little over a decade of writing, Dan Gutman has written on topics from computers to baseball. Beginning his freelance career as a nonfiction author dealing mostly with sports for adults and young readers, Gutman has concentrated on juvenile fiction since 1995. His most popular titles include the time-travel sports book Honus and Me and its sequels, and a clutch of baseball books, including The Green Monster from Left Field. From hopeful and very youthful presidential candidates to stunt men, nothing is off limits in Gutman's fertile imagination. As he noted on his author Web site, since writing his first novel, They Came from Centerfield, in 1994, he has been hooked on fiction. "It was fun to write, kids loved it, and I discovered how incredibly rewarding it is to take a blank page and turn it into a WORLD."

Gutman was born in New York City in 1955, but moved to Newark, New Jersey the following year and spent his youth there.

My Review: In this series of My Weirdest School #4. A.J and his gang are back, and its all about birthdays and fire. But how are the two related? Well, its crybaby Emily’s birthday, and A.J isn’t happy to spend the whole morning in Mr. Cooper’s class being nice to her. While Emily was trying to blow out the candles a few was still alight, So A.J decided to help her blow out the remaining candles but he blew so hard that one of the candles fell off the cake and landed on Emily’s shirt. “Call the fire department!”

Mr. Copper grabbed the fire extinguisher and aimed it at Emily’s shirt and her cake as well. Not only is her shirt ruined, but her cake as well. Emily started crying, “This is my worst birthday ever!” she shouted.

The next day the principal decided to bring Mrs. Meyer of the local fire department to teach the students about fire safety.

Would the students learn anything or would everything go up in smoke? You’ll have to read the book to find out!

The illustrations by Jim Paillot help to makes the story hilarious. I highly recommend
this book.

This book is about a kid named AJ and school friends. A little girl named Emily's birthday was that day and they were about to have cake. Emily didn't blow out all of her candles, so AJ, thought he would help. AJ ended up blowing the lite candle on Emily shirt and it caught on fire. Then a firefighter named Mrs. Meyer showed up to class and started to teach them about the smoke detector. She set the smoke detector off. It kept beeping and she couldn't get it to stop. She grabbed the fire extinguisher and beat it until it was in pieces. Mrs. Meyers kept popping in the classroom with more safety tips and jokes throughout the story. AJ and his friends thought that she wasn't a real firewoman and went to investigate at the fire station. While at the fire station, the kids learned that it was Mrs. Meyers surprise birthday party. when she was about to blow out her candles, the banner fell into the cake and started a fire. This was a fun story. The little boy kept saying things in the story. He even had jokes of his own. I would use this book when talking about safety, camping, school, and even jokes. This book will be fun for students. Some of the words they use are not always positive, but it's still kid friendly. Mrs. Meyers reminds you of Fire Marshall Bill from In Living Color, and AJ even makes a reference to it.

I read this book, having not read any of the My Weirdest School series books before. I did not enjoy it at all and felt like it was very poorly written at times, it seemed very repetitive in certain things that the kid was thinking or saying. It started off by having a birthday cake and it's candles caused a fire in the classroom, then Mrs. Meyer showed up and taught the kids about fire safety. She continued coming to the classroom and interrupting the school day with new fire safety tips, however ended up smashing a smoke detector in pieces. I was really hoping for good things from this series, since I have seen lots of them, however I was disappointed.

"'Remember,' Woodsy told me, 'only you can prevent forest fires.'
Only me? That's a lot of pressure. I started getting nervous."

Slightly educational for once; hopefully the kids' unfounded suspicion that Mrs. Meyer is a pyromaniac and not a firefighter will not distract readers from the fire safety facts.

Mrs. Meyer is the safety teacher for AJ and his classmates in Ella Mentary School. After one of the student's shirt catches on fire the firefighter is called to school to teach the students about fire safety.

My fourth grade students loved this book and asked a lot of questions during and after reading the book. It was a great way to introduce a discussion on fire safety in a new way.

This is the first book from the My Weirdest School series that I’ve read, and it was awesome! The narrator was super funny, and the book was very engaging and a quick read. I’d love to use it as a read aloud for my 2nd and 3rd graders. Kids ages 7-11 or so are sure to get a kick out of this book!

Who is your favorite character and why? A.J. because he is silly.

What surprised you the most? the cake is on fire.

Would you change the ending? Why/why not? I would not because I like MSR. Meyers Birthday.

This series of books are funny and great for individual reading but entertaining enough for adults to want to read out loud to their kids.

It was funny because Mrs. Meyer actually was on fire and the sign that said Happy Birthday Mrs. Meyer said hair dye instead after it burned.

Mrs. Meyer Is On Fire!, by Dan Gutman and illustrated by Jim Paillot, is a fun children's book. Written in eleven short chapters with large print, it is kid friendly. Mrs. Meyer visits Ella Mentry School to share her knowledge of fire safety. Kids learn, "Stop, drop, and roll"; "Fall and crawl"; "Get low and go"; and "Don't hide. Go outside". Included is information about smoke detectors, fire extinguisher use, fire drills, and campfire safety. This is number 4 in the My Weird School books! This particular book is a good way to have a fire safety dialogue with children. It is also an easy to read book for beginning readers to read independently.
