This is the story of Lucy. She's missed out on love and romance and she's decided to take matters into her own hands. If love won't find her, then she will surely find love. Is becoming a Mail Order Bride a good idea or will she just find more disappointment?
Meet Levi. He's the handsome ranch owner Lucy is headed to meet. There's just one little problem. She's a little overweight and she neglected to share this detail about herself. How will Levi handle this touchy issue when they finally meet?
The beautiful, and equally determined Clara hits the quaint Nebraska town about the same time Lucy does and sparks fly. Who will win this cat fight?
"Not What He Expected" is the first publication by Annie Boone. Pick it up and see if you like her short story style.
I do like a good mail order romance I didn't realise this was only 49 pages long but that's my fault since I should have checked. While Lucy has a lot to offer marriage is passing her by, she's larger than most of the other eligible girls in town and one by one they're getting married and she's being left behind. The only answer she can think of is to pursue the mail order bride option but what will happen when her intended meets her for the first time? Levi is a hardworking rancher who needs a wife and wants the love and support a good woman can offer. He's corresponding with two women Lucy and Clara but decides Lucy is the one he wants and sends for her, unbeknown to either of them Clara has decided Levi is the one for her and turns up on his doorstep. Now Clara is everything that Lucy is not and it shakes her confidence but which one will Levi choose? Will he go for inner or outer beauty? This book is okay it would have benefited from being longer, due to its length it's very simplistic and Clara is just too much, with a longer book her character could have been subtler and therefore more believable.
Lucy is a curvier girl and none of the young men where she lives show any interest in her, with all her friends getting married she decides to become a mail order bride rather than being left on the shelf. She starts to correspond with Levi who owns a ranch, she's thrilled when he asks her to join him. But not long after she arrives another young woman named Clara arrives to join Levi as well. Who will Levi choose?
This was way too short in length considering the plot. I liked Lucy she was a sweet girl. Levi came across as a bit weak to me. Clara the other girl was way OTT. The authors writing style is very simplistic, while that's not always a bad thing, in this case it didn't read very well for me.
This is really only because the characters could be more developed. I also felt that the writing was a but average, and the dialogue didn't feel accurate for the location and time period. The writing didn't distract me from the story, but it was noticeable. However, I did appreciate the main character. She felt confident in herself and was a respectable woman with virtue.
So, to summarize. The characters could be more developed and the dialogue improved a bit. But I was very fond of the main character.
Not What He Expected By Annie Boone 4 stars Mar 30, 2019 I'm glad this topic was finally addressed. There are very few brides in the mail order bride books I've heard of that would be referred to as large or overweight. This is the first one I've read. The book was good, but maybe too much emphasis on her weight. I would have enjoyed a bit more of the struggles the groom dealt with.
I love it when the female principal character got some spunk. However, I find Levi stupid for putting the two women in the same inn. Didn't he think that both women will bump into each other? It was his fault that he got into a pickle. Unless, there was only one inn in town.
Levi and Lucy's story starts and finishes quickly, but still is a fun read. Lucy pulls at your heart strings from the very beginning and keeps you invested in her happiness.
Not What He Expected is a clean sweet romance. It tells the story of a slightly overweight female that thinks she has no chance at love so she decides to become a mail order bride. The story lets you know that no matter your size or first impressions, anybody can find love.
It was a little predictable however for a short quick read it was still good. I do feel that this would have been better if it was longer with more background on the characters and it would have benefited Clara to make her more believable. I personally would have liked to seen the characters connect more throughout each book however it not having that didn’t take away from the book at all.
I enjoyed this short story and I would give it 3.5 stars. There was a few errors but I don't worry about that (even big time authors and publishers have errors in their books). The only thing I didn't like in this e-book was the author would underline anytime the main character would think to her self which drove me crazy (I didn't understand why the author did this and I have never seen this before in a book). This was a Christian book and to me it could have more talk about God/scripture.
Sweet Western romance - mail-order bride meets rancher. Sadly, letters can only convey what you want them to and hide what you want, as well. Lucy was overweight - and didn't share that with Levi. Would he choose her over the beautiful woman who had also come to meet him, though not invited to do so. Would he see the beauty and goodness inside Lucy, or just the extra pounds?
If you are looking for a good, quick and easy read, then you have found your book. A BBW mail order bride that stays true to herself. Gotta love a girl who knows what she wants.
