Erin Hunter is inspired by a love of cats and a fascination with the ferocity of the natural world. As well as having a great respect for nature in all its forms, Erin enjoys creating rich mythical explanations for animal behavior, shaped by her interest in astronomy and standing stones.
I've read a few novella collections from the Erins, and I think this might be my favorite. Solid stories for all three!
Mapleshade's Vengeance: 4.25 stars Man, the Erin's are pretty fantastic at these tragic back stories. Definitely the best of the three novellas. I was able to completely understand where Mapleshade was coming from. Her actions make sense, but they're still in character with the way she acts in the other books.
Goosefeather's Curse: 3.5 stars I don't really have much to say about this one. It was semi interesting, but I honestly doubt there were a lot of people clamoring to hear Goosefeather's backstory. I did like seeing Bluestar's parents as kits/apprentices though!
Ravenpaw's Farewell: 4 stars I was most anticipating this one because I've always loved Ravenpaw. This story leads up to Ravenpaw's death, following him and Barley as they take two kittypet kits to Skyclan, hoping they'll take them in. I thought the kit storyline was kind of pointless, although I do understand how it was kind of setting up for the newest series arc. Pretty good overall, but I guess I was hoping for a little more.
I cried at Ravenpaw's Farewell. Even though he wasn't important to the main story anymore, he is still one of my favorite characters. I felt bad for everything Mapleshade had to go through, but her actions sent her to the Place of No Stars, aka cat hell. Goosefeather was mistreated for being special, and I was enraged at every cat who mocked him, his experiences made me feel differently about his character
Mapleshade's Vengeance was the one I was looking forward to the most and it did not disappoint! I was really sad when she had those sad things that happened to her. Like, it was not fair of her mate to not stand by her. At least he should have talked to her about finding a new mate in his Clan. I don't want to spoil this one, but it's the one of out of all of these that's worth reading.
Goosefeather's Curse was not one I particularly looked forward to at first. Although I do like the Warrior series to a point, I have no idea where he came from or what book he was in. I found it hard to connect with him because of that, but I ended up thinking his past was unique and something great to read. I'll have to figure out where his place in the Warriors books is.
Ravenpaw's Farewell was great, although I wish the story was a bit longer and was more clear on certain things. Want to know what wasn't great? It contained a few LGBT undertones, which might not be a problem for some of you, but it was for me. I'm only going to provide one instance where this is shown, but if you want to see more, check out my review of the novella itself here.
On page 212, there was what appeared to be an "innocent" question. They might not have expected readers to catch it, but it was so obvious. Ravenpaw and Barley went to visit Violet, Barley's sister, and this is what her daughter Bella asked.
"Do you and Barley have any kits?" "Er, no."
Yep, I was disappointed with what they threw in Ravenpaw's final days. Unless you're super curious with what happened to Ravenpaw and don't mind the content, this is not a worthwhile read. I would never have finished it, but I decided to so I could let you all know what was in it.
Overall, the first two stories were great, but Ravenpaw's Farewell wrecked it, which is the reason for my low rating of this book.
#7. Mapleshade's vengeance: 4/5 OMG! I always knew Mapleshade's life would be tragic, but I never imagined it'd reach this extreme. I understand the mistakes she made, and why the other Clans said she committed a great betrayal, but I still think they should have at least given her a few days to leave. They can't just push her out of their lives whenever they want. I understand that Mapleshade has a lot of anger inside her, and I wish she could have started a new life with Myler in the barn.
#8. Goosefeather’s curse: 5/5 This was heartbreaking! Goosefeather had a heavy burden on his shoulders, greater than what any other leader had to endure. I can't imagine the rage and helplessness that he surely suffered throughout his entire life. Always rejected, alone, and discriminated against, he was wary of talking to anyone. That's exactly what I thought about him when I read Bluestar's Prophecy... I guess it was easier to think he was just spouting nonsense. Now, I regret it.
#9. Ravenpaw’s farewell: 4/5 To be honest, this made me shed a few tears. I think I knew what would happen from the beginning, but I wasn't sure how things would unfold. It felt a bit repetitive, but I'm always glad to learn more about SkyClan. On the other hand, even though the warrior life is intriguing, it was refreshing to read about Ravenpaw's domestic life and his relationship with Barley. I truly hope to read about that reunion someday...
Ravenpaw's Farewell - 5/5 stars After getting some additional context that Ravenpaw is undergoing liver cancer at the time, a lot of my problems with this book was solved. I didn't understand why they were acting like Ravenpaw is older than Barley throughout the book since I know Barley is the older one. Now I understand that they just didn't have the right knowledge to understand why Ravenpaw was in so much pain. They probably assumed he just had cat arthritis in a way. I knew he was going to die at the end since it says this is Ravenpaw's last journey, but it was still very sad. I also think at this point they hadn't brought up skyclan in a long while for the books, so this was an excellent way to start bringing them back for the newer series. I also like how throughout the book Ravenpaw makes his own choices from deciding he's still a warrior to deciding to wait for Barley in the after life.
Goosefeather's Curse - 3/5 stars Goosefeather is a tragic character due to his powers introduced in this novella. I also tend to like grumpy cats and I can easily compare some aspects of Goosefeather to Jayfeather in Power of Three/Omen of the Stars, but I didn't really find Goosefeather that very likeable. Again this is a novella, so I can forgive some aspects being rushed over, but I think the biggest plot point of this book just fell flat. One of the biggest things to happen to Goosefeather is the Great Famine that killed many cats, but there's no ability to care about these things happening because the entire time Goosefeather just wants to be by himself. We could have possibly gotten to know some of them better when he was a kit, but that just didn't happen. Goosefeather also falls into the tired trope of medicine cats who have powers greater than them and just get forced into the medicine cat den against their will. I also felt a little like Stormtail was out of character and I can't understand why his sister Moonflower hated him so much to where she didn't want Bluestar and her sister Snowfur around him. Those plot points were never explained. Goosefeather's Curse might have been better as a super edition, but I also feel like super editions are too long for a story like this so I just wonder if there's a middle ground that warriors could explore between a novella and a super edition.
Mapleshade's Vengence - 2/5 stars Mapleshade is a character that up until this point all we knew about her was that she was a Dark Forest cat introduced in Power of Three maybe and then given a broader role in Omen of the Stars. I was interested in learning more about her since we knew so little, but honestly I wasn't that very impressed with her story. A lot of the story was rushed to me hopping from one place to the next. Within a day she was exiled from Thunderclan, her kits died in the river due to her negligence, Appledusk and his clan Riverclan didn't want her, and then she travels all the way to the moonstone to kill Ravenflight. I understand that this is a novella and therefore there is a shorter amount of time to go through, but it's just hard for me to believe that all of that happened within a day or so. Mapleshade isn't a very likeable character in this novella either and I feel like her depictions in the main series were just.. better off. It doesn't help that the current team writing Warriors favor her for the fans and sentenced Frecklewish to the Dark Forest due to her one mistake of not killing herself to save Mapleshade's kits. If we're going to leap to that logic, then the Riverclan cats who didn't save her kits deserved to be put in the dark forest too. Mapleshade does deserve to be in the Dark Forest for being a killer, but this book doesn't make her very sympathetic at all. I don't think Mapleshade deserved a super edition.. However this novella wasn't the right choice.
These stories were alright, but did they really have to be so sad?! I hope the next short story collection is a little more upbeat, but it’s Warriors so we’ll just have to see. Another book down on my Warriors reread!
Classic stories from 3 major characters. Mapleshade is always entertaining. I feel for her losses but she kind of didn't need to murder so many cats. Appledusk deserved it. Ravenpaw's farewell rips my heart out.
Mapleshade is evil, don't get me wrong. But if I went through the same thing she did, I'd also have one hell of a crash-out. Appledusk, you're an ass.
-
And Ravenpaw. How I've loved him since I first picked up the series when I was 10. Has it really been 15 years already? Anyway, I hope he finds infinite peace among the stars and that he and Barley stay together forever.

This novella was full of surprises. All I have to say is wow - she sure did have vengeance and I can see why. I'm no saying she is right to do all she did, but one could see why. In the beginning I was surprised to read how two cats from ShadowClan competing on who has seen worse deaths. Then you have RiverClan cat Appledusk strike a ThunderClan cat so hard, Birchface lost his footing and his apprentice Flowerpaw went into the river to try and save him only for both of them to die. You do find out later it was an accident, and Appledusk did feel bad, but what he does do Mapleshade is awful. Only wanted to get what he wanted and when he was done with her, led her on and then to leave her. Mapleshade lost everything. Her mate, and her three kits died from the river. Mapleshade kills so many cats that did not deserve to die. She kills Ravenwing. She kills Frecklewish. She even kills Appledusk who did deserve some pain, but not to die. If all the cats were free to be with whom ever they wanted, most of the death and battles could have been avoided. Besides, all of them are a mix. They just only think they are fully ThunderClan or ShadowClan or WindClan, RiverClan born.
Goosefeather's Curse 05/272024 - 06/09/2024
Goosefeather learns of his gift early in his kithood. But it is an awful gift, I wouldn't even call it a gift. It is more of a curse. He sees far into the future, but can't change a thing. I am not sure what the point of his so called gift was. Goosefeather couldn't do anything about the starvation. First Harepounce died, Flashnose next. Stagleap and Hollypelt. Nettlebreeze next. Doestar died in chapter 10. No other cat has received this same gift. I guess StarClan realized how pointless it is. Goosefeather was able to help some situations, but not really like he intended. He was able to help the kittypet attack but not the starvation.
Ravenpaw's Farewell 08/25/2024 - 08/28-2024
This one is just so sad. I've said it before, I would have loved to see Ravenpaw have a family. He never did. I mean, he had Barley, but I mean a mate and his own kits. He should have received his warrior name ages ago. StarClan didn't have to wait until he was dying to offer his warrior name. Not only that, why is it StarClan who offered it. It should have been ThunderClan and Bluestar. Ravvenpaw was very brave to be honest about Tigerclaw and his evil doings, was willing to leave the Clan to stay alive. Plus, all the times he helped the Clans. I really do wonder what his warrior name would have been. Part of me thinks Ravenclaw because it sounds good, but Ravenpaw is such a sweeet cat that it might have been Ravenheart. I don't understand why if StarClan needed those two kits to join SkyClan, why didn't StarClan reach out to Leafstar themselves?

Mapleshade's Vengeance: Summary: This story is about Mapleshade and how she got exiled from Thunderclan, how her kits died, and why Appledusk didn’t welcome Mapleshade when she asked to stay in Riverclan. Mapleshade is the main character of this mini story. This story takes place many seasons before Bluestar’s mother is born. This story primarily takes place in Thunderclan but there are scenes in Riverclan and Windclan.
Characters: Mapleshade is the main protagonist of this story. She is a queen who wants to keep the identity of her kit's actual father. After her kits drown and her mate rejects her she goes on a bloodthirsty quest to avenge her kits. Appledusk is a Riverclan cat and Mapleshade's kits real father. Even Though he told Mapleshade that he loved her he felt the guilt of breaking the warrior code so he chose a Riverclan mate. Ravenwing is the Thunderclan medicine cat who knew that Mapleshade's kits were half-clan. He is loyal to the warrior code and called Mapleshade out when she was lying about her kits father that eventually led to Mapleshade’s exile.
Themes: The central theme of this story is how family and justice go hand in hand with each other. This theme is developed from when Mapleshade vows vengeance for her kits drowning. In the story it says “ Mapleshade! Ravenwing choked What are you doing here? Mapleshade let her claws sink into his fur around his throat . “Avenging the death of my kits”. She snarled “ If I could kill you three times over I would”. ( Hunter 65 ). This states that Mapleshade will do anything to bring justice to her kits deaths.
Personal reflections: I personally loved this mini story. I loved that Mapleshade got her sad backstory that she deserved. The part that I enjoyed most is when Patchkit told Mapleshade how he and his siblings got avenged. The part I disliked the most is how Appledusk got treated more kindly for breaking the warrior code than Mapleshade did. This mini story made me almost cry when Mapleshade’s kits drowned in the river trying to get over to their fathers clan.
Recommendations: I would definitely recommend this book to people who like cats, vengeance, and sad backstories. Reason why is that every character is a cat. Vengeance is a key part of this story. Mapleshade's sad backstory is the main part of this book. I would not recommend this book to people who do not like cats, death,or sad stories in general. Reason is that cat haters would absolutely hate this book since every character is a cat. The death of Mapleshade’s kits is a main part of this story so people who hate death would not like this book. People who don’t like sad stories would not like this book because of the death and rejection.
Real world connections: Something in the real world that relates to this story is custody issues with the clans. In the story kits born as half-clan are often treated as outsiders to the clan even though they are technically part of the clan. When the leaders find out they will either exile the kits and their parent that the mates decide to leave them with or get treated like an outcast for the rest of their lives but in Mapleshade’s and her kits case it was exile. In real life when parents have custody issues they either have a judge handle when the parents can see their children or just have a loved one take care of the child. This process can be traumatic and scar the child for life. When Mapleshade and her kits were exiled the kits were pretty scared as well stating “ Why don’t they like us anymore ? Patchkit whimpered “ ( Hunter 42 ). Stating that the kits were scared when they got exiled from Thunderclan. This also happens when children are taken from their original homes and get moved around from house to house.
Goosefeather’s curse: Summary: This story is about Goosefeather’s story of becoming the medicine cat. The main character is Goosefeather. The setting is Thunderclan one generation before Bluestar was born. This story follows Goosefeather’s way of becoming the Thunderclan medicine cat but he has a curse that makes other cats jealous
Characters:The main protagonist is Goosefeather. Goosefeather is a cat that is training to be a medicine cat but he has a curse that lets him see the cats of Starclan. Cloudberry is Thunderclan’s current medicine cat that came over from Riverclan after the former medicine cat Ravenwing was killed. Beetail is a Starclan cat that is the first Starclan cat that Goosefeather sees. When an apprentice was stuck in some brambles by the river Beetail came to Goosefeather when he was just an kit and told Goosefeather were she was. When Cloudberry asked Goosefeather who told him were the apprentice was she figured out that Goosefeather had an amazing power to see the cats of the past and took Goosefeather as her apprentice.
Themes: The main theme of this mini story is outcasts and jealousy. “ He nodded gratefully to Larksong, Mumblefoot, and his sister Moonkit but the other kits were glaring at him and the new warrior Stormtail curled his lip to show his long yellow teeth ( Hunter 126 ). This states that the other kits accept his sister and some warriors were jealous that he got apprenticed at only four moons old ( The normal apprentice age is six moons old ) This theme of jealousy shows up again when Doestar said that Goosefeather should get his full name. “ Cats of Thunderclan we have a powerful medicine cat among us and Cloudberry. If you agree I would like Goosepaw to receive his full name as a sign of our gratitude and pride. Goosepaw blinked behind him he heard the apprentices muttering in disgust. He’s only been training for three moons! Poppypaw complained. I've only been an apprentice for a moon! Wailed Moonpaw. That’s not fair! What makes you so special growled a voice in Goosepaw’s ear. It was Stormtail “ ( Hunter 146 ) . The apprentices and Stormtail were jealous that Goosepaw was getting his full name when Goosepaw was only training for four moons while his sister was only an apprentice for a moon. The theme of outcasts also prevails in this mini story it states. “ That’s not fair! Goosekit whimpered why can I see all the dead cats?” ( Hunter 122 ) . This states that Goosekit felt alone and thought that the other cats would see him as an outcast because he has an unique gift. This also shows up later in the story. “ I still think he’s too young to be here, muttered Echosnout” ( Hunter 129 ). This shows that the other medicine cats thought that Goosepaw was still too young to attend and be an apprentice.
Personal reflections: I personally liked this story. It makes the deception of Goosefeather in Bluestar’s promise so villainized. I liked how it explains Goosefeather’s backstory. I disliked how Goosefeather’s peers disowned him for becoming an apprentice and getting his full name early. This story made me feel surprised because every other story with Goosefeather tells him as a villain but I would be grumpy if I had a gift that no one else understood.
Recommendations:I would definitely recommend this book to others. I would recommend this book to those who love cats, prophecies, foreshadowing, and a good outsider story. Cat lovers would enjoy this story since every character is a cat. People who like stories with prophecies would like this story since there are several prophecies mentioned in this story. People who like foreshadowing would like this story because there are several prophecies that are answered in different stories. I would not recommend this book to those who don’t like cats, famine, death, people being shunned away for being different. Cat haters would not like this book because every single character is a cat. People who dislike reading about famine would not like to read this book since there is a famine towards the end of the story. People who do not like reading about death would not like reading this book since there is a lot of death that comes with the famine. People who dislike reading about people getting shunned away for their differences would not like this story because everyone in Thunderclan shuns Goosefeather for having a special gift.
Real world connections:A real world connection I found is being different . In the story it states when Moonpaw and Goosepaw were having an argument about Stormtail it states “ The silver she-cat paused and looked back at him. At least Stormtail is normal, she retorted. Why do you have to be so… different ? (Hunter 137) This states that Goosepaw’s own sister thinks that Goosepaw should be normal. This also happens in real life when people with differences are cast away for not being normal by their siblings and parents.
Ravenpaw’s Farewell: Summary: This story is about Ravenpaw taking Barley’s niece and nephew to Skyclan during the last days of his life and helping them become apprentices. This story takes place after the four clans of the forest go to the lake and Bluestar is many seasons dead.
Characters: The main character is Ravenpaw. Ravenpaw is an old cat that lives at the farm by the old forest who wishes to relive his younger days . Bella is one of Violet's kits who wants to become a warrior and escape the kittypet life she was born into. Riley is the other kit of Violet who also wants to become a warrior and also wants to escape the kittypet life he was born into . Bella and Riley help Ravenpaw to relive his younger days by asking him to take them on a quest to find Skyclan and help them become apprentices.
Themes:The main theme of this story is acceptance. This is prevalent when Riley and Bella are accepted as Skyclan apprentices and Ravenpaw’s preparation for death. In the story it says “ You fought well tonight," she praised. As bravely as any of my clanmates, in fact I was wrong to think that I needed to know a cat from kithood before I could trust them. You have proved that you belong here ... .Riley, Bella, will you do Skyclan the honor of joining us.” ( Hunter 284 ). This states that the leader of Skyclan accepted the outsiders Riley and Bella to become apprentices. Another way that acceptance played a role was preparing Ravenpaw for his death. “ Ravenpaw felt a chill creep over his pelt i…i’m not going to see my home again, am I. No, Silverstream admitted. “ But you must not be afraid of dying somewhere else” , there was a catch in her voice. “ All that matters is that you are not alone.” ( Hunter 266 ) This states that Ravenpaw had to accept that he was going to die.
Personal reflection:I loved this story. I almost cried when Ravenpaw died. Seeing a beloved character die was shattering. I disliked how when we learned that Silverstream never left the forest. Knowing that Graystripe dwells by the lake makes me feel bad for Graystripe knowing now that Silverstream is not with the other Starclan cats looking after Graystripe by the lake.
Recommendations: I would recommend this book to people who like cats, quests, battles, and acceptance. Cat lovers would really like this story since every character is a cat. People who like quests would really enjoy this story since Ravenpaw,Barley,Bella, and Riley go on a quest to find Skyclan. People who enjoy reading about battles would like this book since there are a couple of battles throughout this mini story. People who like acceptance would really like this story since Riley and Bella get accepted as Skyclan apprentices at the end of this mini story. I would not recommend this book to people who dislike cats, quests, battles, and sad stories. Cat haters would really dislike this story since every character is a cat. People who dislike the suspense and surprise of quests because there is a quest in this mini story. People who dislike the violence of battles would dislike this story since there are a couple of battle sequences throughout this story. People who dislike sad stories would not like this story since there are a fair share of sad moments.
Real world connections: A real world connection I made was preparation for death. We see this in action many times throughout the story. One example of this is the conversation that Ravenpaw and Silverstream have in Starclan as mentioned before. “ Ravenpaw felt a chill creep over his pelt I… I'm not going to see my home again,am I. No Silverstream admitted but you must not be afraid of dying somewhere else…all that matters is that you are not alone, and that you know you are loved” (Hunter 266). This states that Ravenpaw is preparing for his death and he is scared to die. This also happens when people are preparing to die and they have to be reminded that they are not alone.

Bruh lol it’s been a LONG time since I’ve read a Warriors book, and I had this collection of unread novellas on my shelf. I’m reading these without much context because I remember very little, especially since these were about minor characters. Even so, it’s easy to get back into. Also, this got me feeling so nostalgic; I freaking love Warriors <3. - Mapleshade’s Vengeance I only remember Mapleshade’s name because of the Dark Forest. Anyways, this was an interesting story - such drama! Mapleshade seems to have a lot of faith in the Warrior code for someone who broke it by hooking up with RiverClan cat Appledusk. She let the sister of Birchface (who Appledusk killed in battle) believe they were Birchface’s kits. To make matters worse, the ThunderClan leader is Birchface’s dad. Things get revealed, and Mapleshade becomes bloodthirsty with vengeance. - Goosefeather’s Curse “Goosekit shrugged. Was he going to get into trouble for not knowing the names of every one of his Clanmates? Theere were so many of them!” - “’It’s too hot to remember anything.’” – same - “’Why are you so concerned about the future? You have to live in the real world too.’” - Honestly don’t even know who Goosefeather is…But he is cursed with knowing the future because these StarClan cats are always hovering around him. His clanmates think he’s weird. Also, it kinda relates to Mapleshade and the previous novella!! Also, I must be getting emotional because tears formed in the back of my eyes when Cloudberry was about to die. And now I’m looking forward to the Pinestar story to see how he decided to abandon his clan to be a kittypet. - Ravenpaw’s Farewell “’Do you and Barley have kits?’ she mewed. ‘Er, no,’ Ravenpaw answered.” - I don’t really remember, but Ravenpaw left ThunderClan because he had Tigerclaw/Tigerstar mentor trauma. Barley’s niece and nephew want to be warriors. I had no idea Ravenpaw got involved with SkyClan. And it just occurred to me 12 years later that Ravenpaw and Barley might be gay. RIP Barley, though.
This. book. Was. So. Freaking. GOOD!! The book as a whole was just freaking amazing! But I want to address each story individually, so bare with me.
First off, Mapleshades vengeance...this poor poor cat was done so dirty. This book really made me sympathize with her. I don't feel like she's the evil cat that she was made out to be in Crookedstars promise, she just a hurt broken scourned cat and honestly I can't blame her for feeling like she need to get revenge for her kits. The clans really did her dirty, as did her mate. I really enjoyed this story and getting to finally see Mapleshades' point of view and what made her who she was. I don't think she's evil. She's just angry and hurt. And in my opinion, rightfully so.
Second, Goosefeathers curse... oh Goosefeather, he got such a bad rap from everyone just making him out as a crazy old cat that was off his rocker, but he wasn't crazy at all he really did see so much that no one else ever knew, I couldn't imagine how hectic his mind always was and how hard it was to try to appear sane when you see everything that no one else can even imagine. This story gave me so much more respect for him, and I really enjoyed it thoroughly.
And last but not least, Ravenpaws farewell...this story broke my heart and made me want to sob profusely. It was a really good story but so freakin sad!! I've always loved Ravenpaw and this story just ripped my heart out. But it was good, I kinda wish he would have excepted his warrior name but I understand why he didn't. Never the less it was a good ending to his story and I know him and Barly will be reunited.

Well that was a pleasant warriors read! So happy for that! This one has 3 stories in one and I'll talk about each separately.
Mapleshade's Vengeance: Mapleshade has become my favorite Warriors villain. Yes, it does feature the forbidden romance(is this even considered forbidden anymore?) but it was done well. I liked seeing how a good cat "fell from grace" and became a villain. It was different and made her more of a complex character as compared to some of the other villains in the series. *cough* Sol *cough*
Goosefeather's Curse: Goosefeather was one of my favorite kitties from Bluestar's Prophecy. It was cool seeing him grow up and how he felt separated from his clanmates. Although I wonder why the Three were considered a big deal since it seems like cats with powers were a thing even back in the old forest.
Ravenpaw's Farewell: This one I was iffy about. It reminded me of The Apprentice Quest. You know, where SkyClan is dragged back in because, "WHY NOT!?" So that whole arc felt pointless and dumb. The BarleyXRavenpaw made my cold heart melt. Also that last scene... My first arc babies. Stop doing this to me. T_T
Overall, enjoyed this collection much more than the previous one!
It really wasn't MapleShade's fault she turned evil. It was pretty much her mate's fault. He was from RiverClan. SO that pretty much ruined it. And she had kits and she lied to ThunderClan about them saying that a tom ( The leaders son. ) was the father. And she took her kits out of camp ( And she is not supposed to. ) Then the kittens started swimming around in the river. Not a thing ThunderClan cats do. So ThunderClan's medicine cat saw them and told OakStar and a kit called PatchKit fell into the water and a river clan cat had to save him. When MapleShade came back to camp a mean surprise waited for her a part of the cats in the camp had gathered. MapleShade got banished from ThunderClan . So she went to RiverClan to see if they would tack her and her kits in. But on the way thare through the river a flash flood came through and killed all three of her kits she got pulled out of the river in time RiverClan tured her away to. she killed RavenWing and then FreckleWish an last but not least AppleDusk her own mate. the her AppleDusk's new Mate ReedShine killed MapleShade. and MableShade sat alone to die and to go to tho dark forest foever more!!! wow right I mean WOW!!
I had waited for this book, and I loved the new novellas. Mapleshade's story is so sad and in a certain way explains her hatred. Although, she makes mistakes herself, and only blames the others. And I am a bit confused about the fact, that she had to kill cats to get her kits into StarClan. Or was that just her imagining?
Goosefeather is a difficult chracter in the books, I always thought him totally crazy. But who wouldn't become strange and a bit crazy, knowing the things, Goosefeather knows? He reminds me strongly of Jayfeather and the other Omen cats. This story changed the way I'll look at him.
Ravenpaw... well, what is there to say. This is a sad, but perfectly fitting end story for this wonderful character. Ravenpaw is a strong cat, he may have left the forest, but in his heart he has always been a warrior and this story shows him at his best.
All in all, a wonderful addition to the warrior series.
Mapleshade's Vengeance ☆☆☆☆☆ I am astounded. I understand why Mapleshade acted the way she did. Everything that happened to her . . . I felt sympathetic for her. And I wished she hadn't been overcome with the need for revenge. I wished everything had turned out more positive for her. But at least I understand her story now.
Goosefeather's Curse ☆☆☆☆☆ I enjoyed seeing some of Goosefeather's life, particularly since it was set before Bluestar was born. So many emotions spun through me much in the same way as every other Warriors book does. I wish there could've been more to this story, but I feel satisfied.
Ravenpaw's Farewell ☆☆☆☆☆ Ravenpaw has a special place in my heart! (I have an individual review here)
Mapleshade's Vengeance-4.25 stars This novella was amazing at representing Mapleshades backstory. She was crazed by the death of her kits and the rejection of her once mate, and that led to her hearing the disembodied voices of her kits telling her to kill all who had "betrayed her." Brilliant
Goosefeathers Curse-4 stars Ah, we have another Jayfeather, except Goosefeather was cursed, not gifted. This was a great novella, and it was a great explanation for Goosefeather and how he is in Bluestars Prophecy.
Ravenpaw's Farewell This was a great novella, and was heartbreaking at so many points. Also, this is proof that Barley and Ravenpaw are in love.
This is my daughter's favorite series of books, and as much as she wants to talk about them, I really didn't know much about it. She told me to read this one because you can get the idea about the series without having to know a lot beforehand. It was an interesting glimpse into a handful of the characters as they deal with relationships, conflicts, loss, death, hope, etc. etc.
Using clans of feral cats to explore these dynamics is an interesting approach.
Wow... this book really changed my opinion of both MapleShade and Goosefeather. If you are a Warrior Cat fan I cannot express to you enough how necessary this collection of stories is in your Warrior cat journey. Please read it, especially MapleShade's Vengeance. And always remember, WARRIOR CATS RULE!!!!
goosefeathers story feels a bit aimless, mapleshades is fine, but oh my god please buy this just to read ravenpaws farewell. these cats are so gay and i love them dearly.
MAPLESHADE'S VENGEANCE This one was great, it tells us more about Mapleshade and how she became evil, the only thing that I'd change if I could would be that I'd use Myler more -he is such an interesting background character, showing up both when her kits die and she is banished and when she dies- but he is just… there saying a few lines and not doing much. He could've been so much more important and change the story so much. I also liked the overarching theme of how grieving can affect everyone differently - Oakstar lost his song, his daughter lost a brother - they lashed at Mapleshade believing that she led them to believe that their kin was the father of the kits- they overreacted and banished her, and I hated that they chose to punish innocent kits but grieving can make you go mad. And we see that so well with Mapleshade that gets sick and fiverish seeing the visions of her kits asking her to avenge their deaths. She goes mad from grief and that was fascinating to see.
GOOSEFEATHER'S CURSE I liked this one - I never particularly cared for Goosefeather but it's interesting seeing a medicine cat being apprenticed and made warrior way earlier than all the other apprentices because of a gift he doesn't want- It was also interesting to see a cat that can see dead cats and visions of the future but can't really do anything to change said future because it will happen no matter what he does. The part where they find that all of their pray they stored is rotten and full of maggots was rough to read, the starving after that and so many deaths in a row.. that was horrible and painful to read- but I liked it. It was dark and gorey, but still interesting.
RAVENPAW'S FAREWELL This one … was depressingly beautiful. I love Ravenpaw. I love Barley. They go on a quest to bring two new kittypet apprentices to Sky clan. Ravenpaw is feeling pain in his belly. Ravenpaw is offered a warrior name but declines. I am glad that this happened because the Erins mentioned that they'd name him Ravenwing and that's one of the main characters from Mapleshade's novella and that would've been confusing - so much happens in this short story but it's so beautiful and touching. I loved Ravenpaw's sendoff, now I just want to see something about Barley when he dies and joins Ravenpaw wherever he is + Bella innocently asking if Barley and Ravenpaw have kits of their own made me laugh so hard.
