Three eggs in a nest begin to wiggle and wobble, until CRACK! CRACK! CRACK! It’s a duck . . . duck . . . DINOSAUR!
Meet Feather, Flap, and Spike. They’re three unlikely siblings who each want to stand out. But together, they make the biggest splash! Perfect for families of all kinds, this playful, clever story has a dino-sized heart.
Do you like this book? Yeah! Because the egg hatched into a dinosaur. It's silly they are all ducks but not the dinosaur.
What's your favorite part of the book? The dinosaur, and the dinosaur splashing in the water and making a wave. I like the eggs and the big egg was a baby dinosaur. It made me feel happy because of the dinosaur and the three ducks.
What do you think of the cover? I like it because it's so awesome. I love dinosaurs. It even says "Duck, Duck, Dinosaur". And the dinosaur is at the bottom
Do you want me to read it again? Yeah!
What Momma Thinks...
This is a really cute book. It shows how a family can always be accepting, even if you don't think you fit in. Of course, ducks and dinosaurs are two of my favorite animals.
Summary: Mama duck was very excited when she found out she was having three eggs! She waited and waited for her ducklings to arrive so that she could continue her growing family. When the first egg hatched, it was a duckling! When the second egg hatched, it was also a duckling. When the third egg hatched, it was a dinosaur! The newborns then fight for their mother's love and attention. This is a heartwarming story of accepting differences, and being true to you. Activity: Prior to reading the story, give students a KWL chart. Have students fill out the K (know) and W (want to know) part of the chart. The students will then have to think about what they know about ducks and dinosaurs. After the story has been read, have students fill out the L (learned) portion of their chart. It’s the first night that Flap, Feather and Spike are sleeping in their own nest. Everything is fine until they hear a GR-ROAR! What is it and what can they do to get rid of it? Digitally created illustrations along with large print and sparse text make this a perfect bedtime story as well as entertaining read-aloud. The story line is a familiar one with the ducks and dinosaur trying to get to sleep but frightened by a nighttime noise. (Turns out it was the dinosaur’s snore keeping them up.) Bright illustrations are well done and entertaining. The solution is predictable and will have youngsters giggling. This would be a great purchase for the elementary level library. Recommended for pre-school through grades 2.
I like that the book undermines the expectation of conflict over the dinosaur being different; the mama duck and ducklings are matter-of-fact about having a big green sibling. Also, the dino's one-word interjections ("SWEET!") are tremendously fun to read aloud. The story is minimal, but the repetitive structure still gives it an arc; it's a good short read for toddlers or for the final book of a preschool storytime. The illustrations don't have a ton of personality but they read clearly to the back of the room.

This cute book is about a family of ducks who accidentally adopt a dinosaur egg into the family. The kids thought it was so funny, and they had a lot of fun seeing the funny ways the dinosaur tries to blend into the family. I think this would've been more successful with a bit older of kids, but it was alright for a preschool group. It was a different kind of dinosaur book than a lot of them were used to, and I think that did gain it some popularity with the group too.
This turned out to be a very fun readaloud, with a lot of opportunity for wiggling, flapping, quacking, and cuddling. Two cantankerous sibling ducklings compete to be the best, only to be beaten every time - if somewhat ham-fistedly - by their eldest "sibling." Ultimately, Mama Duck loves them all, ducks and dinosaur, and they have the best family after all.
This is a cute story about sibling rivalry. Mommy duck hatches her eggs but one turns out to be a dinosaur. This book uses big and bigger, sweet and sweeter to demonstrate sibling rivalry. By the end they are one big happy family.
teaching application- The students could predict what else could have come outof the egg and write or tell a new version of the story.
A mother duck is hatching her three eggs. The first two come out and are always trying to outdo one another, but the third one is a dinosaur. I didn't really like this one. The art was a little too perfect, the first two chicks always arguing with each other was annoying, and the fact that the third egg was a dinosaur was never really addressed.
Wonderful illustrations! They are so cute and the story is really loving and adorable. I wish it was longer though. I felt like the ending was a little bit abrupt, but sweet. I want more! I'm glad there are more books because this lovely family of ducks and dinosaur are so cute.
The illustrations are the best part of the book. The story is okay, but nothing remarkable. I can see toddlers wanting to read it a couple of times. Get more in the full review.
It's a cold and snowy day. Feather and Flap says it's too cold, but Spike is enjoying winter weather, skating, sledding, and building snowmen. Spike helps Feather and Flip to enjoy the activities, and so does mama.
Adorable Illustrations- might even be a fun companion to a book called do like a duck does. Cute story about competive chicks and a dinosaur baby with a duck mama who loves them all the same!
