Berlusconi: The Epic Story of the Billionaire Who Took Over Italy

Rate this book
Before there was real estate tycoon cum President-Elect Donald J. Trump, there was Silvio Berlusconi, the billionaire media mogul turned prime minster who dominated Italian life for the past twenty years. In a candid, warts-and-all portrait of the leader who played hard in office and in private life. From the bunga-bunga parties to his most secret moments with world leaders, this biography is rich in anecdotes and revelations involving Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, George W. Bush, Vladimir Putin, Mikhail Gorbachev, Tony Blair, Nicolas Sarkozy, Angela Merkel , and many others.

Berlusconi's incredible rise to power started from nothing. A self-created man, he was a cruise ship crooner as a young man, became a real estate tycoon in the '70s, started the first commercial television network in history, and turned AC Milan into a world-class soccer club. And that was all before he survived the squalid swampland of Italian politics to become prime minister who has not only served the longest in Italian history, but also has generated the most controversy of arguably any world leader today.

This is a tale of one of the most interesting and controversial characters of modern political Europe, narrated by the man himself. The book's coverage is as broad as the life of the man it describes. One chapter walks through the details of Berlusconi's early real estate plays in Milan; another explains the EU debt crisis and the complex relationships of the people at the head.

Friedman benefited from repeated personal interviews with the Italian ex-prime minister, but he works to maintain a neutral stance. The first half of the book felt a bit biased to the Berlusconi account, though that bias was certainly reeled in during the latter half. In the end, as Friedman says, Berlusconi's innocence today has become more a matter of faith than of fact.

Silvio Berlusconi is undoubtedly one of Europe’s most controversial leaders in modern times. He is the European leader who has been in power the longest and has been compared to Italy’s equivalent of Ronald Reagan. In the book that bears his name, the American journalist Alan Friedman has mapped his life, from his simple upbringing in Milan to the position of prime minister and the life as a billionaire in the 18th century estate in Arcore.

THE REAL ESTATE MAGNATE. Berlusconi was born into a middle-class family in Milan in 1936. After studying law in the 1960s, he entered the real estate industry with a focus on housing development outside Milan. In the post-war northern Italy, the construction industry was hot. The strong economy required labor that flowed in from the poorer southern parts of the country and the new workers demanded housing. The project that would make Berlusconi rich was “Milano Due” and included the development of a new district with 4,000 apartments east of Milan. He started this project in 1961 and the first stage was completed in 1973 – then he bought the 70-room mansion Villa San Martino in Arcore.

THE MEDIA MOGUL. “Milano Due” was also his introduction to the media industry as the residential area had its own TV service. In 1974, the state-regulated television market changed. Local stations were allowed, but only the state channel RAI had the right to broadcast nationwide. Berlusconi realized that if he could buy local stations around the country and then broadcast the same program on them at the same time, he would be a nationwide player – and still following the “local only” rules. The Italian advertising-financed nationwide television was by that a fact in the late 1970s.

CHALLENGES THE STATE TV. To attract viewers, Berlusconi bought up rights to major American films and series. He also skipped steps in the value chain and started his own advertising agency, which turned directly to advertisers. In 1980, his Canale 5 had 13% of the market, compared to the state RAI’s 80%. Four years later, the channels had the same number of viewers. The success story was a fact and advertising revenues increased by 48% annually during the 1980s.

DIVERSIFICATION, CRISIS & COMEBACK. In the early 1990s, the TV empire was renamed “Mediaset” and launched commercial TV companies in France, Germany and Spain. The Group was broadened through acquisitions of insurance companies, construction companies, department stores and publishers. Mediaset controlled 40% of Italy’s magazine market. In addition, Berlusconi had bought the traditional football club Milan in the late 1980s, where he was then chairman for 29 years. However, the recession in the early 1990s meant that the heavily indebted Mediaset (400% net gearing) had major problems. The banks forced a change of CEO and after a few tough years, the group was back on track. At the end of the 1990s, Mediaset was valued at over €30 bn (at the 1996 IPO, the valuation was $4bn).

THE PRIME MINISTER. Despite the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Italy’s Communists continued to hold a strong position in the country. Berlusconi saw the Democratic Left Party (formerly the Communist Party) as the biggest threat to himself, his businesses and his country. He felt an almost physical aversion to the militant left, and in order to ward off the Communists, he entered politics in 1993. Only 60 days before the election, he started Forza Italia and through carefully selected efforts – mainly through his media empire – he took home the victory. He attracted voters with charisma, charm and promises of lower taxes. He would then be politically active for the next 20 years.

MIGHTY FRIENDS AND ENEMIES. In the early 2000s, Berlusconi got to know Putin and over the years had to act many times as a mediator between Washington and Moscow. He was also on good terms with Gaddafi (Libya accounted for 20% of Italy’s energy imports and Gaddafi had invested over a billion dollars in Italian companies) but came to blows with Sarkozy when he carried out a hastily decided bombing of Libya in 2011 (an attack that became the beginning of the end for Gaddafi). After that day, Sarkozy and Berlusconi were bitter enemies. Berlusconi’s view was that Libya, like Iraq, could not do without a strong leader. During his years in politics, Berlusconi also collaborated with Clinton, Bush and Obama.

MOST PROSECUTED ON THE FORBES LIST. Berlusconi has with a net worth of $6.5bn place number 257 on the Forbes list [2019]. He is by far the most prosecuted of the 500 billionaires on the list. The many rounds in the courts have on most occasions been close to bankrupting him, but he has almost always come out as the winner. However, 2013 was the year that was almost got him. His Fininvest was sentenced to pay €494m to arch-rival Carlo De Benedetti. This due to that Fininvest in 1991 had acquired the publishing house Mondadori by bribing a judge. In the same year, Berlusconi was also sentenced to four years in prison for tax offenses. Three years were written off immediately, and since he was over 70 years old, he didn’t have to go to prison but instead had to pay a fine through community service at a nursing home.

Purchased after watching the accompanying Netflix Film. The film was good, but the book was great.

A remarkably neutral portrait of one of the most interesting characters in recent political circles. The book was entertaining, engaging and well researched. The author’s casual tone lent itself to the bon vivant image that Berlusconi has, and had throughout his life.

I was always interested in the life of Berlusconi, and this was my first book, and experience to dive into the topic. As a non-european and someone not well versed in European politics, I had no trouble getting into the book, learning from, and enjoying it.

As stated in other reviews, the author does jump around in timeline a fair amount, so if you are looking to learn, as well as be entertained, that might throw you during your first read. That is my only small complaint.

The book itself is a beautiful hardcover, in excellent quality.

I give this book 5 stars - my first 5 star review since joining goodreads. I will definitely read this book again at some point.

I have just purchased the author’s book entitled Agnelli: Fiat and the Network of Italian Power, written in the late 80’s, and look forward to receiving it.

A nice, relatively neutral overview of Berlusconi's career. Friedman sat with Berlusconi for over 100 hours and I like how he contrasts Berlusconi's rather idealistic view of his life with the more realistic version.

A few criticisms are that Friedman repeats a little too often for my taste and occasionally wanders in timelines, meaning he bounces from what year to the next and back again, leaving the reader a little disoriented at times. But in general, worth reading if you want to learn more about this figure and his impact on European politics.

Tylko w pierwszych rozdziałach książka próbuje udawać biografię. Dopóki opowiada o trudnym dzieciństwie i drodze do bogactwa Berlusconiego, mówi o jego poczynaniach w branży deweloperskiej i medialnej, przybliża nawet sporo szczegółów dotyczących życia i charakteru jednego z najsłynniejszych Włochów XX wieku.

A very personal recounting of a larger-than-life character that had undoubtedly shaped Italian and European financial and political worlds in his vision. The author also went a great length to make this memoir complete, with accounts from various heads of states and political figures, and thus the resulting product is international intrigue as viewed from most sides. A remarkable read.

Very readable but I think you'd really struggle to believe this is an impartial account of Berlusconi's life.

It also seems to consider Berlusconi's lufe story as being over (the last chapter is even called 'Endgame'), yet his friendship with Putin (a whole chapter in the book) and his influence on Meloni's government suggests there may be more to come ...

Excellent biography of Italy’s most “colorful and controversial leader.” Setting is done particularly well. I particularly loved the description of Villa San Martino-Berlusconi’s 18th-century seventy room villa filled with red azaleas, lemon trees, racehorses, a helipad for his chopper, and a private soccer field. The book is filled with great descriptions (a double breasted Brioni suit) and great memories of his time singing crooners aboard ships in the Mediterranean and stories from a childhood in wartime Milan. From his development of Milano Due to his friendship with Fedele Confalonieri, no detail is left unreported.

Like any book of this kind, it's a bit repetitive and obvious. It's nice to see, through, how the author gets to know and, with all the necessary precautions, love his hero. A story of Berlusconi's life and Italian life of the era is quite interesting; the European and political mess of the time less so. All in all, this is a very readable book, perhaps a bit unfulfilling as regards its plot — but it this is not something one can accuse the author of.

Friedman delivers quite a neutral and insightful look at the life (and the making) of one of key figures that have shaped up present day Europe. On the pages, Berlusconi the Showman, the "natural-born seducer", appears as both larger-than-life but also extremely human and somewhat misguided in his ambitions - a feat that only good biographies accomplish. This may be a must-read for anyone interested in understanding more the current situation of Europe and the world...

Friedman kirjoittaa sujuvasti ja hyödyntää monipuolista Italian & kansainvälisen politiikan tuntemustaan. Silittää Silviota myötäkarvaan eikä juuri mene pintatasoa syvemmälle vilppi- ja rikosepäilyihin ja -tuomioihin. Helppolukuinen, muttei kaikenkattava elämäkerta. Adjektiivien ylikäyttö häiritsevää.
