Suck This, Neil Patrick Harris

Rate this book
Dante Moretti has a big problem. His acting career has hit the skids and he's desperate to land the lead role in the next Hollywood blockbuster. It’s his last chance to get back on the superstar track.

But, his personal life is a train wreck. No sane director will work with him any longer. Solution? Bribe his best friend and former co-star, Chris Parker to play the role of his long-term boyfriend. Showing the world he’s in a committed relationship will hopefully convince casting agents he’s reformed, stable and trustworthy.

Even if it’s a lie.

What Dante doesn’t count on is the public’s reaction to the announcement that Chris and he are a couple…and his own feelings for Chris spiraling out of control.

Under the merciless cameras of the paparazzi, Dante is forced to choose--his leading man status or the man he thought was just his best friend. Who ever thought that pretending to be in love would be this hard?

If that title didn’t sell me on this book, then the promise of a fake-boyfriends trope, involving friends-to-lovers, certainly did!

Dante and Chris are the best of friends and (somewhat) struggling actors. They met on the set of the tv sci-fi cult-hit Space Pirates and hit it off right away. Dante is openly gay and Chris is apparently straight; and despite their amazing on-and-off-screen chemistry, and much to the dismay of their loyal fans, the two have always been firm in their “just friends” claims – that is, until Dante finds himself in a bit of a Hollywood bind.

Dante is about to be passed up for the lead role in a new blockbuster film, due to his not so stellar reputation when it comes to his personal life – i.e. he’s perceived to be a bit of a man-whore; or rather (my favourite comparison), the male Lindsay Lohan of Hollywood. He figures, if he can convey a new, wholesome image, of a man in a committed and loving relationship – like the Legen-(wait for it)-dary Neil Patrick Harris – then he can win back some Hollywood credibility and get his star back on the rise. Enter, his BFF Chris.

With some convincing, Dante talks Chris into playing his fake-boyfriend for an undisclosed amount of time, or until Dante can get the big gig he so desperately wants.

The problem is that Dante doesn’t really take into account what this scheme will do to Chris or Chris’ career. Dante is most definitely only thinking of himself; he’s extremely self-absorbed and one-track-minded in his acting pursuits. Basically, he’s a bit of a douche – but a likeable douche, because apparently there is such a thing. Chris, on the other hand, is super sweet, and the best fricken friend Dante (most certainly) doesn’t deserve.

Needless to say, things get interesting between the two, fairly quickly.

This story had so many enjoyable aspects that I quickly gobbled up; everything from friends-to-lovers, fake-boyfriends, awesome pop culture references, hot smexy times, and a solid HEA! It was an all-around good, light-hearted, quick read.

I particularly loved the idea that these two dudes were real-life besties, who starred in a hit show, and had amazing on-screen chemistry which lead the fans to wish for more...

HELLO! Sterek/Hobrien, anyone!?

But the best part is....

Dante Moretti is in the bathroom trying to fend off a panic attack when he overhears the casting director for the movie he’d just read for say it's a shame Dante won't be hired because no studio wants to invest in someone with his messy personal life.

"...The studio won’t hire him because he’s worse than Lindsay Lohan. Its one disastrous relationship after another all played out on the tabloid front pages and on TMZ. The studio wants someone who’s stable. Someone like Neil Patrick Harris...a poster child of monogamy that the Midwest could eat up, and despite the logical inconsistency, believe was a serious love interest for Emily.”

So Dante does what any sane, about to lose his mortgage and have to move back home if he doesn't get a gig soon, actor would do - he goes to his best friend and begs him to pretend to be his boyfriend. They'll be sighted out by the paparazzi and set the gossip tongues wagging about their "committed" relationship and bam! Dante will get the role.

description

The main problem is former child star Chris Parker is straight. (Mostly. You know, except for that experimental phase at Julliard that he never talks about and only told Dante about under strictest confidence.) The other problem is that Chris's business manager stole all his money and ran off to Rio so he's been staying on Dante's couch for the past two months. Which means Chris needs to start getting some roles himself, soon, and there isn't one thirty-something A-lister they can name who's still been cast in a blockbuster movie or on television after they've announced they're gay.

Which means that while this could help Dante's career, it would likely hurt Chris's. It's something that Dante doesn't really think about (which is a pattern with Dante throughout the story).

After Dante eventually confesses to Chris just how bad financially he's doing...the money he'd made from previous work is long gone and anything else is tied up in his house...he can only afford to pay the mortgage for another couple of months - then they'll both be living in their cars.

Chris agrees to his scheme and from there as they "act" like real boyfriends...real enough that Dante and Chris begin having some pretty hot sex and falling for each other.

description

I LOVED CHRIS! Chris is an absolutely delightful character to read and really made the book for me. He's warm, sweet, funny, hot, sexy and loving. If he has one fault it's constantly forgiving Dante when Dante jumps into things without weighing the consequences, or says something terribly hurtful, or blurts out something without thinking. In the end Chris loves Dante despite his many, many flaws.

The plot has some major holes, and I didn't particularly care for Dante, I think Chris could have done a lot better (c'est la vie! Love is blind, folks!)...but I thought there was some great humor in this and I enjoyed all the pop-culture references and Hollywood star name dropping. Once I looked past Dante's many faults and stopped poking holes at it, this turned into a quick, fun, sexy read.

Dante Moretti misses out on a big role mainly because he is considered a Lindsay Lohan– too much drama, too much negative publicity. He’s gay, sure, but that isn’t the problem. The problem is his “flavor of the week” boyfriends and subsequent blow outs are too much. He needs to show Hollywood he can be calm, safe and monogamous. But how to do that? Get his extremely awesome best friend, former child star Chris Parker, to play his boyfriend. Win-win, right?
Well, sort of. Dante uses some underhanded comments to get Chris to agree. Yes, he feels bad about it but you see with Dante , that’s the whole problem – he just spurts out what he’s thinking without actually THINKING about what may happen. As for his part, Chris is a great person and a loyal friend. He’s straight, except for some experimentation at Julliard, but he’s willing to do what is needed to help Dante.
I admit, I’d have given this 4 hearts just for Chris. He’s the backbone of this friendship and sometimes I wondered why in the world he didn’t just dump Dante, both as pretend boyfriend and friend. Dante is the stereotypical Hollywood actor. He’s pretty narcissistic, pretty selfish and never really satisfied. (And just as an aside, Dante questions, “It had to be made up. I mean, who named their kid Asher?” and I had to laugh, because yep, I have a cousin Asher. ) I was disappointed that Dante felt lying to their friend was okay, again, anything and everything to further his career.
Dante makes some truly jerky moves chasing this elusive movie part and it’s unfortunate that Chris always takes the brunt of the fall out. They have some funny moments while trying to get publicity (Jack? Jack is ADORABLE) and while they try to figure out what is going on with them. By the end, I was pulling for Dante as well as Chris, hoping he’d figure it all out.

✮ (¸.•´...he was totally and irreconcilably in love with Chris.

How in love am I with these two men? I KNOW this charming rom-com is one that is going to the read again archives and pulled out time and again.

Who doesn't love friends to lovers romance. And this one literally had Hollywood written all over it.

Stars Christopher and Dante were not A-listers. But they had once been well known in Hollywood circles. Chris had been a child star, and Dante was known for not knowing how to keep a man. Months from being homeless, Dante came up with a scheme to put himself back on the map. With Chris's help, it would have worked, if his best friend and current housemate was in fact gay.

Putting their skills to work, the men set out to deceive Hollywood, and instead deceived themselves. There was a thin line between friendship; and when they both crossed over, was there a way to go back, especially when Dante was never one to stick around.

Dive into this fantastic tale and laugh out loud at all the antics.

I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the authors through Booksprout.

Suck This, Neil Patrick Harris

This was funny to read. Sexy too. And they key word here: crazy ^^

Meet Dante Moretti, man-wh0re extraordinaire and professional douchebag. He's also an actor. And he's in desperate need of work but of course no one will cast him cause of the problems he causes by being a man-wh0re and a professional douchebag.
So, desperate times call for desperate actions.
And just like that Dante comes up with a brilliant plan (and by brilliant plan, of course I mean a batsh*t crazy plan that's purely a gut reaction to his tangible desperation) to get people to think he's matured (overnight) and became a full-on sensible grownup: make his best friend (basically his only real friend too) act as his loving, committed boyfriend.
His straight best friend.
Yeah, that'll get people to taking him seriously alright.
And Chris Parker, sweet, loyal guy and better friend that he is, ends up agreeing with Crazy, putting all and himself in the line for Dante.
So far so crazy.
What his brilliant plan gets him first though, is in fcking lust with Chris and surprising the hell outta him Christ seems to be as much into him. So he gets to clean his public image while fcking the living lights outta his fake boyfriend in the process. Win-win if you ever saw one.
And more crazy than everything else so far is that his plan is actually working. And he finds himself with the part that will redeem him in everyone's eyes. And still he's fcking the loving daylights outta Chris. Life is sweet.
And that's when his old ways, the professional douchebag that he was, comes back in full force. Hurting Chris in the process when he realises that he was stupid to believe that Dante was really a changed man and not the self-absorbed as§hole he knows him to be. He was the crazy one, falling for Dante like that when that was not part of the script they came up with... serves him right.

A wake-up call is in order to gain a little perspective before Dante fcks up beyond repair. For the first time in his life he sees clearly: he might be losing Chris forever. Cause he is a moron. And suddenly everything else seems to fall into place. His acting career, his fame and glory, his old life, his new one. And his love for Chris.
Damage control.
And yes, HEA cause Dante might be a jerk, but he is a sweet, sexy, loving one when it comes to Chris.
They are in love.
Win-win ^^

Dante is up for an audition for a major picture when he overhears a conversation in which he will be passed over for the role because he doesn't have a good image. He has had numerous boyfriends and lot of public upsets and a production crew just doesn't want to take the risk and deal with that. So, Dante comes up with the perfect plan...find a fake boyfriend and stay with him so he can land this audition and he knows just who to ask...his roommate, and supposedly straight best friend, Chris. Chris and Dante were on a show together when they were younger and really hit it off, and while Dante has buried any attraction he had to the man because he was 'straight' he starts developing real feelings the longer they are in their fake relationship; until it doesn't really seem fake anymore. But Dante has to make a choice and decide what he wants more his friendship with Chris or this audition, because he may just end up sacrificing both.

SPOILERS
So, I liked this book, but I also didn't like this book. The genre was right up my alley, I love the fake boyfriend - GFY- bi-sexual awakening kind of books. But I really, really hated Dante. He was such a jerk. Everything he did was too better himself, and you recognize this in the beginning, but Chris gave up so much for Dante and Dante was just a bad friend. I think that Chris honestly deserved a lot better because at the end of the day I think that Dante just wasn't good enough for him. Yes, he has his moment at the end, but too me it wasn't enough, because who's to say that Dante won't put his career over Chris again? He just made it really had to like him. Whereas, Chris was this sweet man who wasn't really up to date on the current day-to-day technology and was willing to help his best friend. He went as far as adopting a dog with the man and then to giving them an actual shot, and Dante just threw him away. He could have called, but he didn't. I think that says everything when he didn't call, and maybe he made up for it at the end but Chris is worth more then Dante's lame apologies. Side note: I also really don't like the title of this book. I guess I get it because there's a lot of things associated with social media but it just doesn't work for me. But I did really enjoy pictures in the book that was a pretty cool idea to see the tweets and posts.

Suck This, Neil Patrick Harris by H.L. Holston and Eleanor Bruce is a funny modern romance I just could not stop reading. Dante is the tabloid queen of his day. He manages to break more hearts in Hollywood. He has a bad reputation and now no director will touch him. Well he has a solution. He has to be in a stable relationship and prove he is reliable. Who does he choose to do this with but his best friend Chris. Bonus Chris also lives with him. So he is sure everyone will buy the rouse.
Chris is straight. He has dabbled with guys before so maybe he is more bisexual than he thinks. But still having the shallow Dante want to be his boyfriend. He is sure this is going to end badly.
When you have someone as sweet and kind hearted as Chris a former child star from the Disney channel and someone as jaded as Dante together the sparks do fly. Both men find themselves changing. And for Dante it is a change for the better. Love looks really good on him.
I liked the progression from friendship to lovers and how what started out as something to fool everyone turns out into the real deal. When you want a romance that will leave you smiling and believing in true love this is the one to pick up.

I understand that some protagonists aren't likable at the beginning of a story, and that's completely fine with me as long as they have one or two redeeming qualities by the end of the story. In this case, while there was a HEA, I disliked Dante throughout the story and by the time him and Chris arrived there, I wasn't as invested as I could have been.

Dante, despite being in show business for years, is selfish and destructive, which leads to roles drying up as he gets older. He basically cons Chris, his straight best friend, into this ruse. Which not only makes him a horrible friend, but a jerk. There is no easing into the role for Chris, Dante wants them out there, on social media, and they even adopted a dog because it's all about image for Dante.

The one saving grace in this book is Chris. He's a total sweetheart, caring about his best friend and his career enough to put his own image on the line, and despite Dante proving a bit unstable, sticks with him. The book has a great premise and one wonderful character, but it wasn't enough for me to recommend this book.

This book…has a witty title. It wasn’t for me…too soap opera like. I could understand why the arrangement made sense and could work out for Dante BUT for Chris it made no sense. On top of that the turnaround time for people’s opinion to change about Dante would take more than days/weeks. Plus Dante seemed like a self-centered ass so I couldn’t get behind things working out for him. He was using Chris to improve his career and also the dog thing annoyed me….I felt Chris should have taken the dog with him, it liked him best & Dante was irresponsible.

I thought this story was sweet, sexy and Laugh out Loud funny! I loved these two characters and of course their sweet little dog too. I loved how Dante first tried and talk Chris into this fake boyfriend thing and Chris at first was a no go but as they grow closer ...WOW! These two are hot as hell together and so damn sweet, I loved every minute of this book. A lot of sexy, a lot of love and a lot of funny! 5 stars review by Nanee at upallnightreadallday.blogspot.com

While I've not read it before, I'd swear this was once J2/Supernatural fic at one time. I could be wrong, but there were too many instances where I could substitute names & it would fit. Pity too, I love this trope, but it was just too weird to read. I couldn't get into it.

Others who aren't familiar with the fandom might enjoy it more. *shrugs*

This was surprisingly interesting!!
It was light, fluffy, and witty, I enjoyed it.
I didn't hate Dante as much as I thought I would....given all the reviews.
I could't help but see Dante as Connor Walsh, and Chris as Oliver.....I know some people saw Sterek, but this had Coliver all over it!

I just wish there were more penetrative sex scenes

Not sure what to say about this story. I did like it, I did enjoy it, both mc’s were entertaining, funny, and - with Dante- a little irritating at times, but something was very slightly off now and then. I’m not sure if it was the writing, the storyline, or just me, because in the end I did like it, it just seemed to lack a little something here and there.

It was a pretty good book. Decent amount of heat. It was just fiction, right? Ha ha. After reading the book, the title seems like a great way to get promotion for the book, which is totally something the main character would do.

Why does the book have this title? Because of lines like:
"The studio wants someone who's stable. Someone like Neil Patrick Harris..."
He's referenced a few times.
"Are you really using Doogie Howser as the example of why it's safe to come out in Hollywood?"

Twilight is also referenced. And then there's a line, "he was totally and irreconcilably in love." About one thing I am absolutely positive (ha), that a very similar word choice is in a book where someone named Edward is a vampire who thirsts for the blood of someone named Bella.

"Dante Moretti sat on the can," is a bold choice for an opening hook. But it worked, maybe because it's just so unusual. (Or because I know some writers who have had discussions about books where characters use the bathroom. Not that the character is using it for 💩 that.)

The character name falls to the typo "Dane" in chapter three. A "has" instead of "had" and "is curled" instead of "was curled," makes me think the author changed the tense of the book at some point.

It's a light, fun read about two actors with a HEA.

Dante is an actor, and he is out. However, he isn't getting jobs, and it turns out it's because he is always in the tabloids for drama in his relationships. So Dante comes up with an idea that he and his former co-star, who is his best friend (and, incidentally, straight) will pretend to be in a relationship in order for Dante to get the role that he really wants. After some resistance, Chris agrees, and the two of them pretend to be dating. Things get real, though, and then Dante messes up.

I actually was looking forward to reading this. I like romances with actors, and this one looked good when I bought it many years ago. And then I read it. And, boy, do I wish I hadn't. Dante was immature and egotistical and inconsiderate. Chris was a little better, but still not an amazing person, because he ran off pouting when things didn't go his way instead of talking it out with Dante. The writing was not good, and there were many editing issues.

I loved it. It was a fun read. One of the MC’s is very egotistical and it would have probably bothered me in a longer romance but this was a quick fun read. It was kind of amusing in this setting. The other MC was sweet and way too good for the other but it worked in this story.

4 Heart Review by Amber

I’ll be honest and say a good 90% of the reason I picked this book was due to the title. I was completely intrigued and if that was what the authors were going for they succeeded! Overall, I enjoyed this story. My one complaint is that is started so incredibly slow and didn’t get good until about the halfway mark. But once it started heating up, WOW….these two were incredibly hot together.

Dante Moretti and Chris Parker have been best friends for awhile. Both men, being seasoned actors have quite a lot in common so their friendship is effortless. During a rough patch Chris moves in with Dante to save money and help with finances. Dante is also going through his own tough times. Due to several rocky relationships that have played out dramatically in the media, producers and directors are hesitant to hire Dante for fear of bad press. Trying to turn over a new leaf and prove he can maintain a steady, healthy relationship Dante convinces Chris to play his boyfriend.

As you can imagine this scenario had some dramatic consequences which put strain on the already stressed friendship between Dante and Chris.

Like I mentioned earlier, I really did like Chris and Dante together. I appreciated Chris’s openness and how he really embraced this having more than just friendship feelings for Dante.

I did really enjoy this one after the pace picked up. I don’t think I would have liked it as much as I did if it weren’t for how smokin’ hot Dante and Chris were together. Both of these authors are new to me and I would seek them out in the future and I would recommend this one!

Dante Morreti is a Hollywood nightmare his relationship drama has kept him from being taken seriously and he really needs this part in a new movie but they won't hire him because he's a disaster. He needs a fake boyfriend fast his only hope is his bestfriend and former co star Christopher but he says no until he agrees now there in deep there chemistry and arguing bring about all kinds of unresolved emotions namely he's always had a crush on Chris he's also the only person who gets him and doesn't take his crap because Dante can be difficult but when Chris realizes he's not so straight after another argument because of something Dante did there all over each other soon there really together but Dante messes up and Chris leaves major problem they just realized how much they love each other and Dante will do anything to prove to Chris he loves him. It started out as just friends pretending but it evoles eventually and they both round each other out and Dante becomes less of a Jerk a better person and Chris learns to open up more and stop being so scared.

I almost went to pre order this book, but then remembered I already owned it as it was in the Limelight bundle. Thank goodness for memorable titles! Still I might rebuy just for the cover.

Funny story about two Hollywood actors, one a jerk, the other his best friend who pretend to be boyfriends to make sure the jerk gets a role; hence the title. Casting directors tell the jerk that while they don't care if he's gay, he needs to be a better more stable gay, you know like "Neil Patrick Harris." So jerk comes up with a plan to appear to be in a stable relationship to win the role. While Dante was a jerk in the beginning, I warmed up to him toward the end of the book. Chris, the fake boyfriend is a gem and why I liked this book. He finally tames Dante and his self centered ways. Plus...a one eyed dog! Nice read for a lazy afternoon, low on the angst and high in humorous situations.

From the beginning until the end, this story had me grinning, laughing and sometimes sniffling. This book was so entertaining, I absolutely loved this friends to lovers story. Dante and his best friend Chris who are struggling actors decided to have a fake relationship to help their careers. COMEDY ensues. I enjoyed each chapter starting off with a twitter or instagram post..this made the adventure more real between the guys. The fake relationship became all too real when a scary situation put a their friendship and budding love to the test. It's a good thing Dante knows how to grovel and Chris holds no grudges. They have a true bond. The ending was soooo sweet and lovely...that's where the sniffles came in. If you love comedy with your romance, this is the book for you.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
