Duality of a Demon: A Paranormal Romance With Folkore, Norse Mythology and An Half-Demon That'll Steal Your Heart
Sam Morgan has been shunned his whole life, by people who don't know they are. As a half-demon, he's spent most of his life alone, swearing off dating as the secret he carries has always ruined his relationships. But his resolve shatters when he sees her.
Every man Lily Quinn has loved has died. So she uses Seidr to ward off any man who comes near her. And it works.
Until Sam. For some reason, she finds herself undeniably attracted to this charming young man. But why? What makes him so special? It should be impossible.
She knows she's putting Sam's life in danger. He knows he can't show her his other half.
They can't stay away from each other. The pull is just too strong.
The killer is still out there, watching.
And now... it's watching Sam.

I want to preface this by saying that I am very picky about which romance I pick up. My top requirements are that there needs to be good chemistry between the couple, good to somewhat good communication between the parties and they still need to remain their "own character" throughout the story. Duality of a Demon fits very well into all of these requirements in my opinion.
Sam is a strong character with clear motivations and struggles from the start: he's a half-demon and he is very angry at the world because of it. Yet, this anger is not taken out on other people, and he does not blame other people (except for his dad, who is a demon) about his situation. He simply acts like a decent person, and does what he can to stand up for others without creating a god-complex about it. He notices Lily right away but instead of hitting her up in the bar, he leaves her alone because she is reading. Absolutely swoon-worthy, in my opinion. Yet, Lily strikes up a conversation with him first (which makes him even more special), and they hit it off right away.
Without mentioning too many spoilers, the couple faces several hardships in the course of a short amount of time- almost like all of heaven and hell is against them, but they still manage to get through it in one piece. No miscommunication trope here, they are by each other's side all the time through thick and thin. Even the spicy scenes between them are both hot and tender, and show love and chemistry in ways many envy.
J.R O'Brien has also done a magnificent amount of research into Norwegian mythology and culture. As someone who is Norwegian myself (as is the author), but also belong to the small pockets that kept the mythos and culture alive all these years, I can say that I am throughly satisfied with how it's presented in the book. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the Wendigo, as I am not native american and I don't follow the practise.
The book itself is very fast paces, and the hurdles Sam and Lily face are solved with quick thinking from everyone involved. They use each other's strengths and powers to save the day, and I was honestly so happy to see the two solvwe thr problems like partners, and not like two people who happened to be stuck in a bad situation. They are to some extent at fault for their own mishaps, but they take accountabilioty for it and own up to it. I would of course have loved for the book to expand more upon it, but I am also more than happy with how the book handled it.
My final thoughts are that this is the first book of J.R. O'Brien I've had the pleasure to read and I will admit that the thrill and the prose has made me a fan, and I am very much looking forward to reading more from her.

This book was so incredibly well written! I loved the balance between the witty banter and the more serious moments—it made the story feel engaging without ever becoming too heavy. The suspense, sadness, love, and happiness all worked together beautifully and kept me invested in the story from beginning to end.
My only complaint is that the ending came far too quickly! Just when I was ready for more, it ended with a mild cliffhanger that left me wanting answers and, honestly, another book. I truly hope this isn’t the end of the story because I am NOT ready to say goodbye to these characters yet!
And can we talk about Riku?! He is absolutely my favorite! ❤️
Overall, this was such an enjoyable read, and I would definitely recommend it. Now I just need to know… will there be another book?! 🤞📚

This was such a good read. The interactions between Lily and Sam are fun and playful, then Riku shows up and he's just golden. The way the author blends modern day with mythology is seamless.
There are gods and goddesses, demons, shifters and witches. Btw, I really want Sam's car and wouldn't say no to a ride on Lily's bike. It's a fun read about love, found families, finding you bio family, and keeping what's yours. Sam and Lily are the perfect cutest couple I've seen in a while. A couple of the scenes I was like, "Aww, so sweet. why can't I find a guy like you?" I'm probably just weird, though.
Anyway, loved it. Will read again, as soon as my TBR shrinks a little. Already pre-ordered it on kindle and if it comes out in print I will probably buy that too. I don't say that about many books, so it's definitely a good one.

This was such a fun, refreshing read! I finished it in one sitting because once I got into Sam and Lily’s story, I really didn’t want to put it down. I absolutely loved the love between them, their chemistry, the way they supported each other, and the fact that their relationship felt like an actual partnership rather than unnecessary drama being thrown between them.
I also really enjoyed the incorporation of Norse mythology. It added such a fun layer to the paranormal elements without making the story feel overly complicated or bogged down in lore. And Riku?! Yeah, I’m going to need that spinoff. I would 100% read an entire book about him.
Overall, this was just a genuinely enjoyable book that gave me romance, mythology, supernatural chaos, and characters I actually cared about. Definitely a nice change of pace, and I’m excited to see what else J.R. O’Brien has in store!

This is an absolutely lovely romp through paranormal romance, mixing multiple theological pantheons and belief systems across multiple continents with a demonic love story to last the ages. Prepare yourself for your heartstrings to be pulled, and watch out for the rug being ripped out from under you as characters you thought you knew reveal their secrets! Was the romance hard core and over the top? Yup, but it works so well. Also, spicy scenes - yes, they’re there, yes, they’re hot, and yes, they absolutely belong there. Can’t wait for the hardcover copy!

I loved Sam and Lily. They were so perfect together. Even though she found something that would keep men away, Sam was the exception. And they just made sense. I loved the originality of this story. Out was so way to fall into and be completely immersed in. I read this from beginning to ending in one sitting. Loved the world building and the characters. The Norse mythology was amazing and brought something really cool to this. I laughed, I swooned, I enjoyed the spice. This was an excellent story.

This was an incredibly well written read!
I love the chemistry between the characters. Lily and Sam's humour, closeness and also how they are individually. They felt like a real couple as their relationship has depth and a real bond. Also loved Riku, I really want more of him. This book pulled me in from the first chapter and I had trouble putting it down. I also really enjoyed how Norse mythology was mixed into the paranormal. Overall I loved the book, and I will absolutely reread it!

If you're in the market for a quick little palette cleanser between heavier reads this is the book for you.
This is a spicy romance between a witch & a half-demon with interesting side characters.
I'd so read a Riku spin off! And would love to read more about Sam's father...
The main conflict does get resolved rather quickly, but, like I said, this is a great little palette cleanser, would recommend.

This was such a fun read! It was so unique and I was so obsessed with the love between the main characters! The Norse mythology mixed in with the demons and paranormal was so refreshing and one of my favorite mythologies! I really enjoyed getting to read this!
