"Whether I live or die, the Rebel cause will go on."
--Ben Raines

Evil Will Triumph

The evil Jesus Mendoza Hoffman, descendent of one of the most infamous Nazis of all time, and his fanatical New Army of Liberation pose a dire threat to the new world--and Ben Raines' rebel forces. With his massive army crushing everything in its path, Hoffman is spreading his chilling doctrine of death and destruction from Mexico to the Canadian border. Outnumbered and out-armed, Raines and his men are no match against the black-shirt guerrilla forces.

And when Raines is captured, the Nazi exterminator gives the rebels an ultimatum: surrender or Raines dies. Against impossible odds, Raines' followers must infiltrate Hoffman's troops and put an end to his brutal reign of terror before Ben Raines and his dream of freedom are annihilated forever!

I paid $1 for this book, and it was worth every penny. You have heard of chick lit; some would call this dick lit (no, I didn't invent this term.) "Flames from the Ashes" is a testosterone infused adventure novel with murder and mayhem on every page. Oozing with self-righteous anger and full of military jargon, it speaks of a right-wing America that is fed up the "hanky-stomping" pansies that had run the country before the Great War.
I hadn't realized that this is part of the "Ashes" series starring the square-jawed hero, General Ben Raines, and his Rebel army. Having not read the other books in the series, Johnstone does not provide background to understand the relationship between Raines and his former wife and his children. Nor does he give a background to former enemies such as the night creepies. (Sounds like Johnstone couldn't resist inserting characters from the horror genre, in which he is also prolific.)
"Flames" reads like a comic book with the evil chief Nazi, Field Marshall (later Fuhrer) Jesus Dieguez Mendoza Hoffman and his myriads of brain-washed followers out to conquer the Americas. (Johnstone must have been paid by the word in order to come up with a name that long.) It is up to Raines and his rag tag Rebel army to put an end to this evil menace. On the Rebel side we have the motorcycle gangs of Leadfoot and his Sons of Satan and Wanda and her Sisters of Lesbos (you guessed it). They faced off against the Nazi-allied gang, Alien Secretions. All the American Nazis have changed their given names to German sounding ones. (I especially like officer Yodel.) A particularly dangerous menace were the Werewolves, a group of fanatical boys trained from youth to do the Nazi party's bidding. There are dead bodies strewn everywhere, as if they were so much sand at the seashore.
Overall the writing is great fun but somewhat disjointed. We hear from Ben Raines' daughter, Tina and the beginning of the book; but where is she at the end when her father is captured by the Werewolves. Similarly his son, Buddy plays a big role at the end of the book but is hardly a presence at the beginning. And what's up with Raines' female guard/adjutant, Jersey? I don't think Johnstone knew what a topic sentence is. But "Flames" is an enjoyable guilty-pleasure, should you wish to endulge.

The South American Nazi threat is still viable in this book, and Ben and the Rebels must deal with it. Ben loses a bit of his finger to a sadistic SS member and then the reader is left at one point thinking Ben may actually be dead... Looking forward to the next book!

Another Masterpiece

Battling the bad guys and kicking butt. Ben Raines Rebels would follow him to hell to fight Satan and his Demons and they would win. This is a great series of books that each American should read.

Very good adventure series. Basically the forming of a new United States after WW3 and the story of the man who leads and forms it. If you like men's adventure stories you will enjoy it. Recommended
