Elves, Dwarves and Dragons oh my! Shadows of Legend is a the first book of the Dragonforged Saga , set in the same world after the events of the Legend of Tal series. While you do not have to have read any of the prior series to jump in and enjoy this book, there will be spoilers for the other series. This reminded me so much of Lord of the Rings and Aragon in different ways. The classes of characters and the magic is different but I couldn't help compare some of the story to the ideas and some of the worldbuilding in those seires.

The story unfolds through the eyes of two different PoVs. Leras and Niom were both outcasts in their society, for very different reasons and grew up together forming a great bond of friendship. Leras, due to his is a half Elf / half human heritage and Niom because one of his Dwarven ancestors was cast out from the Dwarf's city. They couldn't be any different from one another, but due to circumstance they are the best of friends. Leras discovers he is bound to the soul of a Dragon and is ordered to go to the Dragon stronghold or bring war to his home. Niom travels with his friend to his unknown fate, but he was forced to go by a shadowy figurehead who holds the fate of Niom's family in his hands.

Shadows of Legend is the first book I've read by JDL Rosell. It took me a little time to get used to the flow of the story and the established cast. You could tell there is a lot of backstory coming for the Legend of Tal books and so some of the time I felt like I didn't have a full understanding of the world. That feeling dissipated the more we move through the story and the world begins to flesh out more. Leras, even though a prince of his lands, never felt like he belonged but at least knew he was loved by family. Travelling to a the Dragon's keep he is met with distrust and loathing as they believe he stole the soul of the dragon. I started to enjoy the story more once Leras and his dragon begin their journey together.

This was a complex story and because it is the first book in a series I think you have to be a bit patient in the beginning. I could tell the story was setting up for some big payouts and it didn't disappoint. There are some crazy twists, turns and betrayals from characters I should have but didn't really expect. That said you have to get about 40-50% of the way into the book before it seemed to really take off. Still as this will be a series I don't necessarily think that is a bad thing, especially with how it ended.

This is perfect for lovers of high fantasy that don't need a big romance in the story as the book is pretty sparce on that front. Unless you count the bond between a Dragon and the Boy that saved it. Personally, I came for the dragons but stayed for intrigues.
Narration:
Performance: ★★★★
Character Separation: ★★★★
Diction: ★★★★
Pacing/Flow: ★★★★
Sound Effects: none

Peter Kenny is a new to me narrator, but has an extensive fantasy catalog. I enjoyed his performance but he seems to have a slightly faster cadence than I'm used to and I needed to slow down the playback speed from my normal listening speed of 1.5x to 1.25x. I was able to tell the characters apart most of the time but there were a few times I seemed to loose track of the story. I don't necessarily think that was the narrator's issue, but mine and I had to back up to figure out what I missed. Still a strong performance and I can see why he has been selected to narrate a lot of high fantasy.

Shadow of Legends hits that classic fantasy sweet spot in the fashion of Tolkien; a sensational, emotionally-charged work from the mind of Rosell. A must-read for fans of Cahill and Paolini.

I read this as someone who has not yet read Legend of Tal. I have read the Ranger of the Titans Wilds series, so I knew I liked Josiah's writing. This story is more connected to Tal than I would have thought. It was still highly enjoyable and everything that we needed to know from the previous series was explained, so I never felt lost. However, I do feel like I now know major spoilers from Tal, so be aware of that. It's still going to move up my TBR list.

Shadow of Legends is the start of an epic fantasy series with multiple moving parts that focuses around two main characters, Leras and Niom. Leras is a half-elf prince who is accused of stealing the soul of a dragon, which initiates a trek to the dragons' tower. He is joined by Niom, his dwarf friend, and several others on this quest. A lot happens along the way - enough to fill up an entire book in itself - but it doesn't stop there - and, to be honest, I didn't want it to. The friends eventually find themselves on their own journeys, testing the limits and building character for both.

We are introduced to so many interesting races and monsters. Josiah describes everything enough for me to imagine what I am seeing, and some of it is absolutely frightening! I felt totally immersed in the world and engaged with the characters. This first book sets the series up for some really epic adventures. I am looking forward to seeing where we go next and how the characters further grow and, hopefully, survive.

If I could do it again, I would read Legend of Tal first because this book in itself would be worth the full journey. This is my first read as part of JDL Rosell's ARC team, so I better catch up! These are 100% my honest thoughts and I am glad the book resonated with me.

This was a hard book for me to rate, because when it was good it was SO good, but when it wasn't good it was boring.

For me, I think the biggest flaws were 1) the pacing and 2) character's motivations and related actions.

I found the pacing frustrating especially in the first half of the book. Book starts and Leras needs to get to where dragons live. A dragon offers (demands) that he fly Leras straight there, Leras' family disagrees and insist they will travel under their own power with a promise to arrive by a certain time. Wonderful set up, love the idea. Didn't care for the execution. Leras and his companions travel and run into various obstacles and people, giving us lore, worldbuilding, and introducing us to new characters. Great, fantastic. Some of their pit stops (including being held prisoner for goblins for some time) felt like they added nothing to the story, but we spent a decent amount of time with them just sitting around doing nothing before they escaped with few issues other than the party being split. Then, almost immediately after the party splits, dragons come and forcibly bring Leras to their home despite his protests and despite the deadline for him to arrive not being there yet. Leras's family arrives not long after to try and rewcue him, but in the short period of time Leras has been with the dragons he has decided he needs to stay. Which left me wondering, what was the point? Why not just have Leras be taken by the dragons at the start? He could have been with the dragons for a longer period of time, making his decision to stay more understandable. (And considering how soon after Leras arrives some dragons are arguing for him to be removed, having him choose to stay and having reasons for wanting to would he great.) His father and the rest of his companions could have followed on foot, giving us the necessary worldbuilding.

Meanwhile, out other POV character, Niom, is being blackmailed into serving the will of his master who has unclear motivations. His family is threatened to and told to travel with Leras, and do various other things. Which, again, great premise. But the way we're shown that this mysterious Master is dangerous is both how Niom thinks of them and by other servants of this master appearing in the most obscure locations to pass on new orders. And if this master has so many servants in so many locations, why do they need Niom specifically to be doing these tasks.

There were other similar things that just didn't make sense to me and pulled me out of the book.

Despite that, however, there were many things about it that I absolutely loved.

Rosell's dragons are wonderful. I love their culture, their arrogance, their history.

The magic is interesting as are the different ways people can wield it.

Leras' and Niom's character development was very well done. They both felt very real with their doubts and uncertainties clawing at them. And seeing them start to overcome those things felt both exciting and realistic.

The action scenes were fantastic. And the conclusion of the story left me eager to see what happens next. And I will definitely be continuing the series, because despite thinking that this book was just "okay" I'm going to believe it was just a slow start and hope that the rest of the series lives up to greatness hinted at here.

I received an audio ARC from NetGalley, and greatly appreciate the publisher for giving me the opportunity to listen to it early in exchange for an honest review.

So I am definitely in the minority here.

It sounded like something I would adore... instead, I felt like it dragged on....
F O R E V E R...
And, being as the audiobook is 24+ hours... it was painful at times.
Then again, at other times, I was fully invested... so, not sure where it went wrong for me...
There are all sorts of creatures, and magic and lore here... but it just didn't all add up for me.
But, if it sounds like something you’d like, please look for it soon!

3 🌟🌟🌟 for me. Shadow of Legends.

*** This has not been released as yet, but look for it soon! Release date is 9/29/26. ***

Honestly a very refreshing read. Having multiple story threads at play weaving together to make the complex plot and varied allegiances among the party made for a compelling read and as the mystery of the coming threat unraveled the ending epilogue was satisfying yet still frustrating as I stared at the cliff it left me on! I can't wait to see what happens in book 2!!

The author brings us an EPIC, epic fantasy. This is not a story that you will finish in a weekend at the beach. Leras is key to this story as it weaves it’s way across Aolas. In this adventure they discover unknown perils “their opponents proved more fearsome, monsters huge and horrific, their varied forms defying common knowledge”.
Along the way they need to know who to trust. What they do “might make her an ally. Or another enemy”.
Niom is the other key character among the main characters. “Niom didn’t traffic in denial if he could help it. If this journey had taught him anything, it was always to expect the worst.” It he would not be disappointed – the worst seemed to always be just around the corner, if not the current battle.
This travel was discovery. What they discovered “seemed a prophecy of doom”. Should they spend their efforts on a single individual they all know well “Or to focus on the greater threat to our World and home?”
The resulting tale contains sorcery, a Lattice of magic, fights against evil in unknown forms, and all too human evil.

AN EPIC ADVENTURE AS A FRESH START!

I write this review as a reader of the Legend of Tal series. Thank you JDL Rosell for this e-ARC!

Shadow of Legends, is the first book of the The Dragonforged Saga following the Legend of Tal, picking up a new cast of characters and making a perfect bridge between our previous adventure with Tal Harrenfel (or Brannen Cairn) and the newest generation of characters.

It stands perfectly on its own but the bits and pieces you pick up along the way about the previous adventures will make you want for more - and luckily the previous series is complete!

I'm not the biggest fan of prologues, but in this case it really does serve the story starting with one of the youngest characters from the previous series, which is perfect for those of us who come from Legend of Tal and great for new readers as it fills the generational gap between characters a bit as we are following Leras, Tal's son.

These books keep up with the themes that made me fall in love with the world of Aolas. There's humour, mystery, an expansive world building, multi POVs with fully realised characters and their own ARCS. The underlying sense of hope throughout the story, is what makes the books in the world of Aolas so distinct!

A dragon story that is not traditional but still feels familiar as this is not a farm boy finding an egg in a forest, but a different take on the much loved trope.

Perfect for fans of Ryan Cahill, Christopher Paolini and Michael R. Miller!

Highly Recommend!

The audiobooks are great as well, excellent narration across the whole series, so, if you don't have the time to sit with the book you can always experience the story this way!

The author recently published a reel on Instagram with what for me is the perfect pitch: Baldur's Gate meets Eragon!

Can't recommend it enough!

Shadow of Legends gave me plenty to admire, but very little to hold onto emotionally. I could see the care behind what Rosell was building, but I never quite crossed that invisible line from observing the story to living inside it. I kept appreciating what Rosell was doing more than actually getting swept up in it.

The worldbuilding was the strongest part for me. Aolas feels fully thought out and the dragons (and magic with rules + consequences) belong naturally inside its history instead of feeling added for spectacle. The larger world always feels like there’s more happening beyond whatever is directly in front of us. Rosell knows this world inside and out, and that confidence comes through on the page.

🎧 The audiobook unfortunately kept me at even more of a distance - and was maybe the root cause of my lack of connection. The narration made almost every scene sound urgent, like the story was permanently leaning forward. I also struggled to separate characters. I'd suggest reading this one rather than listening to it. I think the writing would've had more room to find its own rhythm on the page.

I can see how this world will find an audience, and there's real care behind what Rosell has built. This is for readers who love dragon-heavy epic fantasy, ancient lore, detailed magic systems, and watching a hero slowly grow into their power. Connection matters more to me than being able to admire the craft from a distance, though. This was one I respected more than I felt.

Thank you to NetGalley, Brilliance Audio, the narrator Peter Kenny, and the author J.D.L. Rosell for providing me this audiobook ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Reminiscent of Dragonheart, Leras is soul-bonded to a dragon. Why or how, is a mystery. The author has created a brilliant world where characters journey on a quest to seek answers. Along the way, they learn who to trust, and also who could betray them.

Centring his story on the son of the hero who saved the world, Rosell creates a fantasy that both captures the fear one is unworthy and the truth that defeating an existential threat doesn’t automatically solve everything else as well.

While this novel is the first volume of Rosell’s Dragonforged Saga , the story takes place after the events of The Legend of Tal so this review might reveal some details of that series.

Leras Venaliel is the son of the Elven Queen and the world-saving human hero she took as consort. Viewed with disdain by many for both being only a half-elf and for failing to act like a true prince, he divides his time between carousing amid the commons and studying sorcery in the hope he will finally awaken a spark of magic—until an emissary of the dragons arrives demanding he surrender himself immediately for crimes against them. Negotiating permission to make the journey on his own recognisance, he sets out to correct what must be a mistake; however, as a strange power manifests within him and his companions’ own pasts expose the group to new threats, he realises both that the accusations might be somehow true and that he and the world face much bigger problems.

The novel opens some years after the world was saved from a group of mages of almost godlike power by the legendary hero Tal Harrenfel. Thus, in a paralleling of the real world, the alliances and forbearances of nations and individuals in the face of dire threat are unravelling beneath self-interest. Rosell skilfully uses this post-war combination of pettiness and exhaustion to increase the difficulty the elves face in responding to the accusation against Leras: handing him over without having evidence he has committed a crime risks other nations making threats to get what they want; but not handing him over will embroil the elves in a war that is likely to leave their nation shattered even if they win; a situation made more complex by the elven court potentially being less willing to risk the nation to protect someone who is not a “proper” elf but Leras’ youth and lack of magic making it less likely he will be able to defeat his accusers if he is surrendered.

This inciting incident results in a pleasing inversion of the classic quest beginnings where the callow youth is the one who has a quest they believe must be fulfilled and the others are doubtful or get drawn in without wishing it.

At its highest level, Rosell’s setting is a classic fantasy world formed of medieval nations, humans, dwarves, elves, goblins, and other common elements; but the details are characterful, preventing the world from feeling like a bland stereotype. As with many modern fantasy series, none of Rosell’s races are portrayed as consciously evil with inter-race conflict stems from misperceptions, competing needs, and mundane moral imperfections with which all struggle; thus, much of the protagonists’ struggle is with complexity rather than the simple battle between good and evil. However, Rosell’s world also includes beings which behave so inimically to people and civilisation that the question of whether they are metaphysically evil is moot; therefore, the moral underpinning of this world is closer to a more optimistic cosmicism than a denial of absolute virtue.

Rosell choses, for reasons that make good narrative sense, to have the queen’s consort, the man who was the mighty Tal Harrenfel before defeating the Tyrant Gods tore away the more powerful half of his soul making him—at least semi-literally—a different man, be one of those accompanying Leras. Although having the hero who saved the world in the group would overshadow Leras, Rosell makes good use of the fact he is not the epic figure any more; thus, while he still possesses knowledge and experience that far outstrip Leras, and which cause him to pull the quest in directions that Leras might not freely choose, he is no longer able to solve the direst of issues with puissant sorceries. In addition to having shifted from the hero of the previous series to the mentor figure in this, some of the hard choices that Tal made to put saving the world ahead of the interests of other people have made him enemies of individuals and nations and thus the advantages of having him in the group are also balanced by his presence creating issues at various points.

From a narrative perspective, having the main protagonist of the previous series present in many scenes of this novel provides a way to share key information about those events with readers who have not read the previous series—or need a reminder—that is more immersive and plausible than an epic prologue or repeated extracts from historical texts.

The more contentious aspect of including him so prominently, at least among fans of the previous series, is that the former Tal is not Tal and so might feel different in a way that is subtly distracting rather than engaging.

Further adding to the political complexities of how Leras will journey to answer the dragons’ accusation, Niom his best (arguably only real) friend is indebted to a crime lord who has a strong interest in Niom being part of the group for reasons that are not disclosed—but do become somewhat clearer as the novel unfolds.

Rosell balances the evidence that the group uncover on the journey carefully, revealing that some seemingly unconnected events or schemes could be parts of the same greater plot but also strengthening the appearance that others are not; this creates a growing sense of a threat to the world that is even vaster and more complex than the already dire challenges the group have uncovered while maintaining the realistic feeling that many problems are the result of human mistakes or selfishness rather than a single grand conspiracy.

The novel ends with the protagonists benefitting from at least a temporary reprieve from imminent danger and with them having made significant achievements, but also with much greater challenges yet to overcome. Thus, it feels strongly like the first volume of a series that it is rather than a stand-alone work but does so in a way that is likely to feel promising to those seeking an immense and complex fantasy series.

Leras is an engaging protagonist, displaying a realistic combination of unconscious privilege, self-doubt, and drive to prove he has worth for himself rather than just who his parents are. Each of these both aids and hinders him but is underpinned by a fundamental decency, meaning that while readers might not always agree with his approaches, they are likely to be sympathetic to his intents.

Niom, as a dwarf of an outcast family now scrabbling for work in an elven city, forms a contrast to Leras: not expected to be exceptional and thrust into a heroism that fills him with shame rather than validation. Although his obedience to a crime lord is a choice and thus moral failing, Rosell presents it as a choice that many would make, and thus it serves more to elevate Niom’s efforts to do the right thing than to weaken the reader’s sympathy for him.

The supporting cast are a solid mix of common social and racial traits, and individual nuances, providing a good balance between supporting the strong tribalism of a pre-industrial world and the sense that each character is a full person rather than a tool to advance the protagonists’ story.

Overall, I enjoyed this novel. I recommend it to readers seeking epic fantasy where the world isn’t perfected and protected for all eternity when the heroes defeat the great evil without downplaying the role of heroism in improving the world.

I received an e-ARC of this book from the author. Thank you JDLR!

I have had an unexpectedly busy couple of months, so I haven’t quite finished yet. I wanted to make sure that I left a review with my feelings on the book before it released.

First of all let’s talk about the vibes, or the overall feel of the story. I would compare this to Michael R Miller, Christopher Paolini, Ryan Cahill in writing style and overall epic fantasy feel. It even gives a little Lord of the Rings as we have a crucial quest being undertaken by a small group of heroes who attempt to accomplish their quest despite all the other factions trying to interfere.

The flow of the writing is excellent. Pacing has enough action to keep you engaged, but not so much chaos you feel like you need a break, let alone the poor characters in the story.
The characters themselves are complex and interesting. Some side characters have a mystery or baggage that adds to the story, rather than distracting, or muddying the plot. I really like Leras, the main character in this tale. He is young , with many things to learn, but seems a mostly rational and empathetic person who is willing to face this quest head on.

There are many races, and creatures in this tale, my favorite being the DRAGONS!🐉 Yep, I definitely am here for the dragons. 😊

I honestly haven’t come across anything that is a negative to me personally, so far. 5⭐️

I try not to do any spoilers, so I won’t go into any particular details. The blurb about the book is a good descriptor of the story. Saying that about spoilers, this is the first book by this author for me, and I have also started reading Legend of Tal. I didn’t realize that I would be spoiling the other series for myself by reading this book 😭. This is your warning. This book is about the offspring of one of the main characters in Legend of
Tal. If you don’t want to spoil that series for yourself, read the Legend of Tal series first!
That said, with the fact that things from the first series are explained in this book, I don’t feel as if I am lost when events in the previous series are referenced.

I will revisit this when I have finished the book completely, hopefully this helps anyone considering reading or buying to make their decision. 💕

I received an advanced copy of this book but the review is my own and well deserved.

After reading the Legends of Tal the series that precedes this one, I was so pleased to get back into their world.
You don't really have to have read the first series before this one, as this is set about 20 years later and is a stand alone series, but the past is mentioned a few times and if you are obsessive like me, you will want to read them, they are equally as good.
This book is about a half elf and the troupe of people and family that are sent on a journey that will change the fate of more than one of them.
There are dragons, gryphons, dwarves, elves and many other good and evil species that are brought to life by the author with minute focus and detail that makes you feel you really are living in their world.
I think the author is well on his way to being one of the greats, his attention to detail and the way he describes everything is just wonderful.
There are surprises along the way, lots of adventures, that will keep you on the edge of your chaise longue and you will fall in love with more than one character, I promise you.
I will definitely be reading more of the series when it is available and I will be steadily working my way through his previous books, while I wait.
Obviously I would highly recommend this book, you miss it at your peril.

I recently had the pleasure of ARC reading Shadow of Legends by J. D. L. Rosell and wow... what an incredible introduction to this author’s work! Josiah writes in the detailed, immersive style of authors like Christopher Paolini, drawing me in right from the start. The world-building is exquisite!

The dragons are written exactly how I imagine them to be. Fierce and majestic. Leras’s flight scene gave me so much emotion. I could literally feel the wind rushing past and see the view right alongside him!

Leras is hands down my favorite. The way he shit-stirs Faerna adds such a fun, relatable banter to the story! Faerna herself is so intriguing! There is clearly way more to her than we get to see in book one and I am excited. Niom is fantastic as well! I loved following his views. “Damp me to the deep, why did I come?” He cracked me up with his constant grumbling! Bran and the rest of the gang are so easy to care about from very early in the story!

The Ghouls were scary as hell, and the creatures described in the deep were so well-written. Chapter 27 gave me actual anxiety!! I was literally on the edge of my freaking seat when they crossed through! (And those goblins? Mean as all hell!).

Around the 40-45% mark... WTF! That was a plot twist I completely did not expect, but it was so cool. And the ending? I don’t think I was ready for it to end! There is still so much we don’t know, and I was left staring at the wall thinking, “what do I do now?!” Well, now I guess, we wait…

Iara, oh how I instantly loved her!!! She and her mother are deeply intriguing. I found Iara’s strength, wit and grace to be a very welcome addition to the storyline! I am officially frothing to dive into Josiah’s other work - especially Legend of Tal, which connects to this story, though I believe you do not need to have read it first. I might go back to read it and do a second read of SOL to see what I pick up differently.

Thank you so much J.D.L. Rosell for having me as an ARC reader. This review is entirely my own honest thoughts and feelings. I loved this story and cannot wait for what comes next!

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of this book from the author and after meeting him at a book event with three other indie authors I was excited to get into his work. I had picked up his series Legend of Tal from his website prior and was just as excited to start that as I was this book.

This book has everything you love about an epic fantasy story! Dwarves, elves, mages, goblins, and dragons to name a few. Epic battle sequences, touching moments between father and son, friends sacrificing everything to help those around them. Diving into the world of Aolas for the first time was an absolutely treat. The cast of characters were diverse and rich, the story was compelling and vast, and the world building was too notch as well.

As the story progressed and you got to see the development of Leras, Niom, and Bran I found myself really connecting with all the characters. The battle sequences later in the book were an absolutely treat and really showed the state of that world that Aolas is in. I can’t wait to see how these characters grow, especially how the connection between Leras and Z’Hal strengthens. I can’t wait to see how these rifts that are popping up and the creatures coming from them, the super cool feather dragon for instance, play into the story in a bigger picture moving forward.

Overall, great read! If you enjoy some epic fantasy with great characters, a rich, detailed world, and excellent storytelling then this book is for you!

Received as an ARC, I am leaving my honest review. This is an absolutely astounding beginning to a journey of mind and soul connections that had me gripped from the first chapter. Brilliantly written with a plot that begins as a group gathers to heed a dragon’s warning. There are many discoveries uncovered, danger growing as they seek their goal. But then, separated by circumstances, the story becomes a tale of wonderment as each group searches for the other, led by instinct, determination and fear of the unknown. Meeting entities along the way they learn how to control magical powers, the main characters focused on energy from the world and power from ancestors. Connections are deepening, bonds are forming and overcoming deficiencies is key. In the background a war is brewing. Can they be proficient enough to overcome the evil and save their world. Destruction is coming, but their warrior spirit will have tides turning. The ending is truly epic, as is the entire story, which leaves you craving for more!

I really enjoyed this! I have purchased other books from the author but they are still on my TBR so this is the first one I have read. I enjoyed the world and the characters. I thought the dragon part was done in a unique way and was intriguing. The only possible downside I had to this is even though it said you didn't need to read the Legends of Tal series before this (and you didn't, I wasn't lost or anything), however I feel like I possibly got some large spoilers for the Legend of Tal series, which I have and I do plan to read. I just now feel like I know things that maybe I wish I didn't know before reading that series.

Thought this was really enjoyable and can't wait to see where book 2 takes us!

This story is a completely new adventure in a world we all thought we were familiar with.

Bringing in new characters and adding a new take on some old favourites it quickly immerses you in a world you want to know more about.

The pace of the book keeps you thinking ‘just one more chapter’ and gave me that rare opportunity to discover a world that has so much to offer and is familiar yet new.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can’t wait to continue the series when it is available in the (hopefully) not too distant future.

I really enjoyed this amazing story. However, I have not read Legend of Tal yet so I will probably read this again after I read that series. Anyway the author did an amazing job with this one. The characters were outstanding and the plot had me on the edge of my seat. One thing that I loved is the various kinds of characters. It has some of my favorites that I love. Dwarves, elves, mages, goblins, and dragons which are just a few of them. It also has Epic battle sequences, and also a glimpse of the relationship between a father and his son. Friends sacrificing everything to help those around them along with unexpected enemies.
Shadow of Legends is the start of an epic fantasy series with a lot of moving parts that focuses around two of the main characters, Leras and Niom. Leras turns out to be a half-elf prince who is accused of stealing the soul of a dragon and that causes a tripto the dragons tower. He convinces his dwarf friend Niom to join him along with several others. One of them being his father Bran. A lot of things happen as they progress and some get seperated a long the way. Leras knows he has a lot to learn about dragons as he trys to come to terms with his dragon soul. Once they arrive at their destiny Leras knows his life will never be the same again. He must accomplish his task to appease the elder dragons and avoid being eaten.
This is a very complex story that will introduce you to so many interesting races and monsters. I am really looking forward to seeing what will happen in the future with this group

This was a good book and I am anxiously awaiting the next installment but it it isn't the kind of book you can burn through in a few days. There was a lot world-building and character development and I struggled with its deliberate, slow-burning early chapters and the extensive, atmospheric journey through the Deep. There are many slow, introspective moments scattered throughout the book, making the world feel tangible and ancient. The relationships among between the core companions feels authentic as it is built on shared exhaustion and vulnerability rather than instant fantasy camaraderie. In the end though the slower, character-driven pace reaches a magnificent payoff and delivers an immersive, high-stakes dragon fantasy that leaves you eager for the next installment.

This was a great read, I was excited to return to the world of Aolas. We get to meet the new generation of adventurers, as well as those from Tal’s series. JDL Rosell's storytelling talent is outstanding. The characters, the world, and the mystery come alive, and you find yourself drawn into the story. Though it is not necessary to read Tal’s series to enjoy this new series; everything you need to enjoy this book is woven into the story. I can honestly say you don’t want to miss out on an exceptional series and should read the Legend of Tal series. If you like a well done epic fantasy I would highly recommend this book–I couldn't put the book down, and now I find myself counting the days until I can pick up the next book in the series.

Thank you so much to the author, J.D.L. Rosell, for the opportunity to read this story as an ARC, I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Another exceptional book from J.D.L. Rosell - highly recommended.

This is the first book in the new series set in the world of Aolas. It is a sequel to the Legend of Tal series, so if you read the book there is plenty there to recognise - people, places, and much more will really feel familiar. If you haven't read the Legend of Tal series, you can still read this book anyway, it just won't feel quite so familiar.

A massive dragon arrives at the home of the elves and demands that their Crown Prince gives back the soul of a dragon it claims he has stolen. The penalty if he refuses is the total destruction of the Gladelyl elven nation. They negotiate to allow them to travel on their own to the dragon homeland. There starts the epic journey...

This book is well written, gripping, exciting, and seriously good. I found it hard to put down, and kept wanting to read more. If you love epic fantasy, you will love this book at least as much as I do.

A swirling epic start to a new series. I received this book from the author and wished to leave a review. There are a few old characters from the previous Legends of Tal and some new ones with lots of heart and secrets. Rosell doesn't disappoint the reader in this story. He combines suspense and action in equal measure. It kept me engaged and I can't wait for the next book!

I received an advanced copy of this book from the author.

This book is one of epic proportions both of size and story. The word building is superb and the story, gripping.

The characters are engaging, including the human, elven and dwarves along with the dragons and gryphons.

Dragonforged will appeal to lovers of the books of Tolkien and his Rings and those who just enjoy a well written, enjoyable story.

Silas is a country of legends in many ways. It is home to elves, dragons, dwarves and many other creatures.
And home to Leras, a half elf prince.
A pity, though, the elves and dragons are not on friendly terms anymore. Till the queen of dragons insist on the presence of Leras. Because a dragon egg has to give birth to a dragon but only the presence of Leras can make it happen.
Why?
Author JDL Rosell certainly knows how to keep a reader occupied in the fascination of a very strange world called Aolas, it being quite a tome notwithstanding.
Enjoy

Shadow Of Legends is the first instalment in a must read series for any fan of dragon-rider, epic fantasy. This book is currently my favourite book 1 in the genre. Full stop. I haven’t enjoyed a dragon-rider series opener this much since reading Eragon late at night in my room at 13. I absolutely loved reading Shadow Of Legends! The only problem: why aren’t more people talking about it?

Dragonforged takes place 20 years after The Legend Of Tal, one of Rosell’s previous series, and hosts a myriad of crossover characters, many of them living shadows of the legends they once were, as the title suggests. This is the first book I’ve read in world, so I went in blind. Clear signs were visible of the previous series in context of history and characters and it all read seamlessly.

Our main protagonist, Leras, sheltered prince to the elfish queendom of Gladelyl is thrust into a world-spanning adventure across the rich lands of AOLAS when a power, unbeknownst to him, begins awakening inside. He is the son of legends, marginalized prince, and hated half-blood. Half elf, half human, Leras works desperately to substantiate his value in a society that resents his human heritage. The insecurities born of this racism are exacerbated by the fact that he’s unable to channel magic, a natural inborn ability for elfish highborn. Yearning for a chance to grow beyond the queendom’s boarders, to prove that he’s worthy of respect and to be free of his mothers loving eye, he’s both frightened and thrilled at the prospect of the adventure that befalls him.

Leras is a young man who has a big heart and knows what it is to be marginalized. He’s also very naïve because of his sheltered upbringing. These qualities shown at the beginning of the story are so well realized throughout the novel’s many traversed landscapes and his growth is so palpable by the end.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention how much I enjoyed the romance for this character. From moral dilemmas and diplomatic awareness, down to how his palms sweat when that one person gave him that look, I found it all very relatable and thus realistic.

I won’t say too much about Niom as I want to avoid spoilers, but I have a duty to properly represent a character that’s this endearing. A Dwarf living in Elendol, the capitol city of the elves, Niom and his family reside there as refuges and are largely marginalized for it. He’s also Leras’ best friend. Niom is someone who’s being taken advantage of .. by nearly everyone around him. He’s the young man working a double shift that wants a better life but doesn’t think he’s worth it. But that’s not why he’s endearing. He lives in my mind because his motivations are never selfish, even if people would have him believe otherwise. Everything he does is for those he loves and I’m enamoured with him for it. He’s also very much a Dwarf. If you know you know!

This story is fast paced even when its not. There’s always something important happening. During the opening, we get to know our characters and have a chance to realize what makes them tick. What their relationships look like. There was enough intrigue happening that it was just as exciting as the action scenes. When the adventure starts, the action scenes are fast paced and alive with rich worldbuilding. Multiple different plotlines are active at once making the world feel highly layered.

AOLAS is a vast continent home to many different races and cultures that blend together so beautifully. Terrifying creatures, that would be hard to imagine if it weren’t for Rosell’s vibrant prose, come alive as they emerge from the vast underground world of connected tunnels and caverns that exists below the surface realms. Meanwhile, on said surface realm, unforgettable cities such as the elven capitol of Elendol and its Dwarven counterpart Dhuulheim we’re a highlight for me. One exists within the foliage of some of the world’s largest trees, the other in the depths with Deepdevil nightmares.

There’s a pantheon of Gods playing their own games behind the scenes and the reader is left guessing what’s really going on thru out the story. The tyrant gods are dead, so what’s lurking in the shadows?

The magic system is flawless and incredibly rewarding. I won’t spoil anything, but if you like hard magic systems you’ll love what Rosell’s doing here.

Shadow Of Legends is a story about marginalized and mistreated people overcoming the rolls they were given in life. Finding your purpose in a world that would hold you down and keep you caged forces one to grow beyond what that world can comprehend. It’s a story about duty and the price people pay to uphold it. Should duty be upheld no matter what? Or should there be a limit on how far it stretches?

This is an incredibly well written book in the thrilling new Dragonforged series! Every part, every chapter, was an adventure and I had so much fun reading it. If you’re a fan of any of the big names in dragon-rider epic fantasy you have to read Shadow Of Legends. It’ll be the next big series, there’s no doubt in my mind.
