Archie Comics has always been representative of teenage life. And I should know a thing or two about being a teenager—after all, I’ve been one for 75 years! THE BEST OF 75 YEARS, 75 STORIES gives fans the opportunity to take a look at some of my favorite stories from the past 75 years, one picked from every year since 1941. Along the way you’ll meet some of my friends (both off panel and on!), learn some behind-the-scenes info about the people who brought me to life, and get to learn about what was going on at the time the stories were made.
Celebrate 75 years of entertainment, humor and fun with me, Archie Andrews!
reliving my childhood reading archie and veronica comics and little lulu sitting out in the field below our house in the summer sun’s tall grasses.
twin engine planes flying overhead the sounds that I love to this very day
drinking coke a cola and blowing on the rim of the bottle making whistling sounds my dog by my side, but that part I don’t remember still it had to be because I always had a dog.
While these stories are fair to good, what's MOST interesting to me about this book is seeing the progression of the characters, both tonally and artistically, and how both of those mirror the years that the stories are being written in.
Recommended overall for most Archie/comic fans, but especially HIGHLY recommended for those with an interest in Archie/Comics history.
This BOOK is a major classic, as it is a bound book sold as a commemorative edition to celebrate 75 years. It contains 75 stories. It isn't a digest, as Archie is usually sold as. Can you believe? I am guessing then, that Archie and his comic books have been a part of everyone's childhood and has been a part of everybody's past. I would like to share a recent Archie story. All of my little girls have grown and flown the nest, leaving behind hundreds of Archie's in my studio apartment living in Main Street of Vancouver BC. Whew! So I'm spring cleaning, putting them up on Craigslist... and the props master from RIVERDALE phones me and wants to come buy the most vintage Archie's for the set and backstage of filming for RIVERDALE...!! UMMM?..OK!!!! YA!!! it was awesome. She came over and we had a great chat. I gave her extras and my faves as a kid cuz c'mon I'd rather have my Archie's end up on the SET OF RIVERDALE! than anywhere else....! Life is cool sometimes...! So, anyhoo, vintage stories are contained in this book too, lots more stories than just a digest. It's an actual book so it can go on ones bookcase!! I liked it. I hope you enjoyed the short story time...! My favorite has always been beautiful Betty! How about you??
I was born in 1964 and have been reading "Archie" comics and paperback digests since I was old enough to read! This book brought back fond childhood memories, as well as catching me up, a bit on what I've missed in the years since! A great read for ANY "Archie" fan, young or old!
I got this book for over 80% discount on Amazon. In comparison to that price, buying the book felt reasonable. Though you can observe variations in the art and story lines over 75 years, it still retains the quintessential Archies charm. My favorite characters have often been Betty and Veronica, therefore I did not enjoy this book because of the central focus is on Archie. What has always made Archie great has often been due to great supporting characters like Mr. Weatherbee, Reggie, Jughead, Cheryl, Sabrina and unsurprisingly, Betty and Veronica. Without the gang, Archie is just an ordinary and unremarkable young teen. The latest version of Archie, by Mark Waid and Fiona Staples seems to have a bit more personality than his earlier avatars. Nonetheless, one will always be aware the seclusive charm of Riverdale will never get old and Archies will always be there to assure you of uncomplicated joys that tend to escape our own complex realities.
It's interesting to see the evolution of this comic during 75 years, including the funny looking with which the characters started or the context in which the stories unfold, like blackout drills or dance for soldiers during the world war II.
The comic series gives a small introduction for every 5 years, setting the reader in the historical context in the world and also in what was happening in Archie's world, and then a couple of stories related to that period.
A keeper. I really enjoyed this trip along memory lane. It's a pleasure to witness the way such a beloved character and friends have change in appearance along the time, but also, how the popular culture and ways of the world are reflected in it. This is the kind of Archie I will always love. Maybe I'll still be alive when the 100th years edition come out, I wont miss it for sure.
What a trip! Loved seeing the Riverdale grow and evolve through the years, and hold up a snapshot of the zeitgeist of each period. Loved the little editorial notes accompanying each segment. This was really a treasure
Reading Archie's always makes me smile. When I am in an awful mood this one always picks me up. 75 years is a long time to be a teenager but who cares right
An excellent overview of a comic which has been a part of the American consciousness for just over 3/4 of a century! It is pure Americana suburban idyll, white picket fences, friendly neighbours, gorgeous girl next door, etc. It seems the art style took a couple of years to find its look, but then has barely changed over the decades, except for changing fashions and expanding the supporting cast in diverse ways. It also provides an overview of other titles withing the "Archieverse" such as Betty & Veronica, Jughead, Josie & The Pussycats, Sabrina The Teenage Witch & more. With narrative texts every few stories to update on all the changes, the book gives a great history of Archie comics and is a great introduction to anyone (e.g. fans of Riverdale) who want to dip into the World of Archie and see what it's all about.
