Time is running out, and the only way for Squirrel Girl to stop Galactus is to get to the moon, you know, somehow? See the unveiling of Squirrel Girl's new Flying Squirrel Suit...which she might have borrowed from Iron Man. Also, the final face-off with Galactus! On the Moon!
Ryan North is an unbelievable gift to the world of comics, and Erica Henderson's art is the perfect compliment to his writing. This series is utterly enjoyable even if you aren't familiar with decades of Marvel canon, but if you *are*, there are tons of in-jokes and references to enrich the experience. I can't wait for the next volume!
The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, aka Doreen Green, is a woman with the proportional speed and strength of a squirrel. In addition to her abilities to climb and jump, she's extra nimble and she can talk to squirrels. She uses these awesome abilities to fight crime with her squirrel sidekick, Tippy-Toe.
A quirky superhero. Silly and fun.
#3 in the series. The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl battles Whiplash, foils a bank robbery, and reaches space to battle Galactus.
In this episode, we fall in love with Nancy, who is just as great as Squirrel Girl. Not only does she stand up to burglars, but more important, she does -not- recognize her roommate, even when her roommate accidentally calls her her roommate- but she DOES recognize Tippy Toe
I am so in love with Squirrel Girl, I feel like I would scream and swoon like a Beetles fan in the '60s if I ran into her. Well, if I actually ran into her I'd probably freak, scream, and run away. Because she is a comic book character, not a real life fabulous hero.
But if I ran into Ryan North (the writer) and Erica Henderson (the artist) I'd be all adoring fan gal. Assuming they were wearing name tags. Because I have no idea what they look like.
Know who I do know what they look like? The little girls who grace the Letters From the Nuts pages (which in the boring world would be letters to the editor...or in this case, letters to the fabulous creators of Squirrel Girl). Little girls dressed for Halloween in their Squirrel Girl costumes. Little girls who can dress as a super hero without looking like a tiny sex object wanna be. Little girls who are idolizing an older girl.
And hopefully, these little girls, and all the other little girls who haven't dressed in a fluffy tailed costume and been highlighted in a comic book - hopefully all of these girls will think 'I can be a super hero! I can be 50% squirrel and 100% girl!" And, when they get a little older and realize that comic book hero isn't actually a college major or a career path, they will say, fine, then I'll be a computer science major, that looks pretty awesome. Or a plumber. Or a car mechanic. Or a kindergarten teacher... It doesn't matter what they choose to study in school or do for a living. What matters is that little girls (and young women, and even middle aged women and retired women) never think "I can't do that because I'm a girl. Only men do that." This is all that is important*
This is why I love Squirrel Girl. And Erica Henderson and Ryan North. Because, in addition to being witty and intelligent and just so well done, Squirrel Girl and the world she lives in doesn't just reflect a future I hope for, but also a future that comic books like this will help create.
THIS IS FREAKING AWESOME! This is the funniest series that I am reading right now. The bad guys are quite strange, there are plenty of kicking-asses and I just LOVE the jokes. And well, she is wearing Stark's armor. What else do you need to be told to READ this series NOW!?
How does this continue to be amazingly hilarious? The jokes should be stale, but instead I'll be singing, "something something something unk" for the rest of the day. She's an endearing character because she has a big heart, and she runs a joke into the ground without it going stale. Now I want a falafel.
Fun and soooo funny, Squirrel Girl continues to delight. I'm so glad Doreen's roommate Nancy continues to be a part of the story because she's just as wonderful as our protagonist herself and they make a great pair. Totally makes me nostalgic for my first days of college and clicking fantastically with my roommates.
GIVE. ME. MOAR!!!!! I was seriously hoping there would be at least two-three new issues at the comic store last night, but alas, there was just #3, which was a very funny/quirky/adorable story but I still wanted about ten of these to read. I'll just have to check back soon and see if there are more new issues in.
The team behind this is literally God, let's be honest. This is pretty much my favourite comic this year (ans it's not going to end after Secret Wars, so that's good), let's see what's going to happen in the next issues, because Squirrel Girl is the best.
Really funny and I like like the main character a lot. It's nice to see a female lead that's a little clumsy and not wearing a skin tight bodysuit. I started with #3 and I'm going to go back and read the first two issues now.
Freaking phenomenal as per usual. I wish there had been a little bit more of Koi Boy and Chipmunk Hunk in the friendship team but there was lots of good Nancy-Squirrel Girl friending so that makes up for it.
Cara: I don't know what they could add to make me like this more! I love the roommate, the squirrels, Doreen, and even the bad guys. I want more!! 5 stars
