Separus, the mighty demon wants Aurora on his side. He wants her to come willingly, or he will take her hostage until she succumbs to his leadership. In his plot to capture her, he disappears, and Archangel Michael must find him. To do this, he must forsake his training regime with his gifted fledglings, Aurora, Ben and Cindy.
The continuation of their training is vital and the only angel with the skills available is Zacharias. He has turned his back on the Archangels yet offhandedly he continues to serve while based at Tatev Monastery. His training is not for the light-hearted. The method he uses makes Archangel Michael’s strict methods seem soft.
During training, the word has reached them that Separus is after Aurora. To draw her out of her training in the Tatev Monastery, he is going after the human Ethan, Aurora’s past lives true love. Much to Ben’s discomfort, the battle is on to protect him.
Will Aurora succeed in protecting Ethan before it is too late or will she have to sever her angelic relationships and bow to Separus’ leadership?

I enjoyed it! And found it very inspiring and interesting! In Fact towards the end I found it very difficult to set this ebook down till I had clearly came to the end of the whole story. I recommend this for anyone who may enjoy reading about angels protecting innocents! Great. job Katrina! Looking towards reading your next great spiritually inspiring ebooks! By Angela
I always try not to get too hyped up about a book. However, having read the first book in this series, I was eager to read this one, and had high hopes for it. I was not disappointed! This book was a fantastic read!
I enjoyed getting to know more about the characters, and watching the relationships between them grow and evolve. Plus, the plot was both interesting and exciting; it grabbed your attention quickly, and kept you guessing until the end.
*Note: I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. This has in no way influenced the contents of my review, and I assure you that the opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
After her actions at the end of the first book in the series - Fledgling - the human-turned-angel Aurora has drawn the unwelcome attention of Separus, one of the most powerful of the demons. He covets her power and is determined to capture her and turn her to the side of darkness.
Aware of this Archangel Michael, leader of the angels, assigns her and her friends to be further trained by Zacharias, a rather bad tempered 'earthbound' angel who is an expert in fighting and weapons. As their - at times brutal - training takes place the demons are plotting to capture the three angel friends by using the ultimate bait for Aurora - Ethan. Aurora will need to make a choice, and not an easy one.
The Taking continues more-or-less where Fledgling left off although there is a distinct change of tone. Whereas in the first book Aurora, Cindy and Ben are out and about in the world saving innocents, here they are in training for very much of the time. In other hands this might be a disappointment, but Cope has an eye for telling the interesting bits of stories and not labouring the mundane. It also helps that the training is somewhat unusual, as is the teacher. As the major new character Zacharias is very well drawn, suitably grumpy and terse at being given 'humans' to train, as he sees it.
When conflict with the demons arises Cope again shows the flair for describing fight scenes from the first book and these, as would be expected, are far more intense battles with much more at stake. These are not serene angels gently guiding their human charges through life. These are kick-ass super heroes who are not afraid to put themselves in the way of extreme danger for what they believe is right.
Aurora must also confront her feelings for both Ethan, her human love, and Ben her angel friend. Both relationships are forbidden and this just complicates things further. I suspect that this aspect of the books would appeal more to female young adult readers but they are well written even if you will probably be shouting at the book telling Aurora not to be so silly at points.
Overall a second strong showing in this series and very recommended. If the angel/demon theme doesn't sound like your cup of tea then just give it a go. You will be pleasantly surprised.
this book is great and full of action amazingly great with a little bit of romance. if you like romance action and plot twists I highly suggest you read this book.
I enjoyed the book because of the storyline. Angel fighting demons, love between them, I can't wait until I can read another book by Ms Cope. It makes it wants to cheer for her and be sad
A sequel as good as the first; solidifying The Afterlife Series as a series worth reading.
The longer review:
The Taking doesn’t disappoint; avoiding the sequel slump that can often stymie a series. The addition of a grumpy old protagonist adds an unexpected depth to the mix of characters. He is a needed balance to the amount of millennial thickheaded-ness Aurora and Cindy bring to the table. (As a millennial myself, I hope the world doesn’t think we all act like them.) Aurora’s decision making doesn’t drive as much of the plot in book two as it did in book one; this is a big plus for the story line.
The story has a gradual build up in intensity ending in a great fight seen finish. The ending was full of action packed surprises and more of that lovely decision making by Aurora. Aurora does some crazy things in the end and again gets reprimanded by the arch angels. Honestly, one of my biggest gripes is that I was truly excited for her to in trouble, but her punishment felt week compared to what I thought she deserved. Dang that girl got off way to easy.
Anyway all the other fledgling side angel characters don’t appear in this story, and the remaining characters all grow in depths from book one. There still is all the tendon ripping, bone breaking fighting you can take. And leave it to Aurora to have this lingering love triangle make its way from start to finish.
Bottom Line:
If you liked the first you will like the second. If you held off reading the first, i’d say this is a series worth getting into.
Where the book lost a star:
The prologue. I new right when I saw the word that points were coming off. The Ethan surprise would have been much better as bomb drop we didn’t know about in the middle of the story. Instead, we knew before the whole book got started. I have never been a fan of prologues, they almost always can be woven into the story in a better portrayal.
Amazing book even though I like the other books this one has blown me away. Such an enjoyable read! I've been following from the start and I have seen huge improvements from the start to the now in all Katrina's books. Keep the great work up!
As with the first book, I finished this one quickly and really enjoyed it and have already started the last book in the series. Definitely a interesting subject and the author tells it very well.
