Fifteen years after their mother walked out on them and their father, twenty-seven-year-old Charlene, and her sister Stacy open a box that their father keeps his secrets hidden away in. What they learn changes everything, what really happened to their mother.
The Box by DM Wolfender proved to be one of the best stories I've read. The characters were well developed. I'm impressed by the author's writing style. There was enough romance to soften and bring light and shade to a story that involved an abusive father. The reading experience was enjoyable with the suspense maintained until the end. A great book.
I think this book had a great story line. I liked the mystery element in this book. This author write very good short stories. I have enjoyed the two I read so far. I enjoyed the characters in the story as well. Even though there was a monster in these pages. * I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*
Every time I pick up Ms. Wolfenden’s book I know that I will be instantly connected with her characters and sympathize with them even though the subject matter of the story will be a hard one, but that’s exactly what I love about her books: she never shies away from dealing with such topics and presents them in an eye-opening light and with the utmost sympathy towards her characters. When Stacy appears on her sister’s door on the day of the latter’s birthday, both have no idea how this day will end. As their father suffers an incident and is taken to the hospital, the two sisters find a box in his room that reveals the most sinister truth about their mother’s disappearance. As the investigation unravels, Charlene has to relive the memories of the past and dive back into her nightmarish teenage years where constant abuse was an everyday occurrence. But in order to finally move on and bury the demons of the past, Charlene first must know the truth and punish the guilty party. Even though fictional, “The Box” tells a story of two girls that deal with very real problems that far too many women still have to face daily, and I applaud Ms. Wolfenden for bringing this subject matter to light. Beautifully written, this bittersweet story is definitely a must-read, which I highly recommend.
Mysterious and gripping. This book will keep you entertained from start to finish. I'm adoring these short stories from this author and I hope they release a lot more.
Way to hit on a topic that is a huge thing around the world. Abuse. Child abuse, abuse to adults.
It opens on the birthday of the youngest child, Charlene, who is celebrating her 27th birthday. Her sister stops by in hopes to get her out for the day when their father intends on kicking them out. Charlene wants her father and her sister to make up. To be happy with each other again but Stacy, Charlene's older sister, can't forgive the abuse they suffered when they were kids. Their dad falls down the stairs. They get him to the hospital.
While their dad is in the hospital, Stacy looks in the box that their dad has had for quite some time. What she finds will change their life, and what they really think of their father. Especially Charlene.
To follow their journey get your copy today, and hopefully, you will be just as engrossed in the short story as I was.
This is a well-executed short story about two sisters facing demons from the past and their abusive father. The author does a fantastic job of “showing” instead of “telling” and the unfolding of the characters comes slow and steady so that the reader can get a strong sense of who they are and what they are faced with. For a short story, it has a lot of suspense. This was a great read during my lunch hour!
I guess the biggest question people wonder when they think of buying this book is "What's in the box?" The box belongs to an abusive father in this twisted tragic tale. It is really a small object that sets off an avalanche of emotionally charged scenes that have you hooked till the end. It's not all tragedy and doesn't leave you upset but is a well rounded fulfilling read. You'll want to know what is in the box and read the drama that follows.
DM Wolfenden packs so much into this short story, suspense, abuse, loss and mystery. Obviously in a short story the number of characters is limited but the author brings out the best/ or worst in the ones she portray.
I have read DM Wolfenden before but The Box showed me how good her writing is. Anyone who delivers a full story and follows the disciplines of short story writing deserves a well earned 5 star.
This was a great short read. It flows perfectly and keeps you on the edge of your seat. It touches some topics that can be hard to read but it give a you an ending that satisfies your need for an hea. Sometimes answers do finally surface and through all the heartache life can give you the ending you deserve, whether it's good or bad depending on what you deserve.
What secrets are in the box? This is an an extremely fast and entertaining read. There are surprises all throughout the book. The characters are well developed and you're not left feeling like something is missing. I look forward to reading more work from this author.
