Title: Devil's Food Murder Author: Carol Durand, Summer Prescott Series: Frosted Love Cozy Mystery, 10 Release Date: June 2015 Publisher: Summer Prescott Books Rating: 3 stars
Favourite character: Echo Least favourite character: N/A (can't say without spoilering people)
Mini-Review: This was very character heavy with cozy romance vibes and very light on the murder, which is not why I read mysteries, but it is what it is. The

Chas finally filled Missy in on his estranged family and invited her to fly home with him to New York to celebrate his Dad's birthday. They arrive the day before and Missy creates special cupcakes for his Dad but as soon as she enters the party she meets a rude entitled jerk who orders her to get him a drink and Missy puts him in his place but she is definitely feeling like a fish out of water with this high society party but Chas rescues her and it seems like everything will be okay but then there's a murder and the whole thing descends into mass chaos and Missy is a suspect since someone took a video of her argument with the deceased. Rude people, getting shoved fully dressed into the pool by the woman who his family thought Chas should marry was all too much and Missy retreats to her room. So many twists, turns and plots along with an accident or two keeps things chaotic but finally the police discover what killed the victim and Missy is no longer a suspect but there are still far too many strange things happening. In the end the killer is discovered, and all appears well until Chas has an untimely accident. Great read.
With a recommendation from Mayor Chadwick, Althea Browning approaches Missy for help with planning her wedding. Missy agrees, with the understanding that it is not something she usually does. Before she has to start with the wedding planning, Chas and Missy head to New York for his father's 85th birthday. This also gives Missy a chance to meet Chas' family. Unfortunately, Missy feels totally out of place with his family and the society people in attendance.
Missy has a disagreement with Giles Heatherington, who is later found dead with one of her cupcakes in his hand. Naturally, Missy is the prime suspect and Chas has no authority here.
Who killed Giles? Why was he killed? How will Missy prove her innocence? Will Missy survive her trip to New York? Will Chas be able to help with the investigation? More importantly, will Missy and Chas' relationship survive the New York visit?
Summer Prescott does a great job of showing society from an average person's perspective. She also knows how to wind multiple mysteries together and still keep them straight.
Chas' background was quite a shocker I feel. I suspected that he probably had a secret or two, but that is big. Missy finally meeting his family was interesting, as they come from a very different upbringing. I will say though, given what they've been through you would think that Missy would have more confidence in their relationship bit she's the first person to jump ship.
I enjoyed the story line and mystery, it was interesting to see the Beckett family dynamic and how Missy fit into it. Though I found that murderer was a little obvious I still liked how it played out in the story.
This book went into Chas' past up until parts of his high school. I am hoping that the trend to develop characters continues into future books.
This was perhaps the best book yet! I loved it! We learn so much more about Chas and his family and upbringing and get to see what makes him the wonderful man that he is. *sigh* He’s definitely one of my top book boyfriends, no doubt. Missy was amazing as usual. I love her spunk and attitude when confronted with a rude person. She’s got a fiery streak to her that will not hesitate to put someone in their place when warranted.
Every so often you find a series of books and a wonderful cast of characters that fuel the need to read more and more. This book and series make you want to keep reading. The mystery is always well written and the characters have become family. I'm highly recommending this series and I'm looking forward to more.
I was on the edge of my seat reading this boo. It was exciting. Thank you for a well written series. I can’t wait to read the next book and find out what happens to my favorite characters.
Missy finally gets to meet Chas' family and is accused of murder. I wish the stories were longer, I read this one in under 30 minutes. You don't really get time to know or care about anyone other then the original characters.
Part of me feels committed to continue reading at this point, since I've invested myself in 10 books worth, but I can't get over how frustrating this series has been. I like the characters overall, the author is very descriptive, but at the same time they aren't descriptive and whole scenes that could be exciting to have spelled out are merely summarized. And it happens over and over again. While the mystery is rushed, at least the romance isn't and I appreciate that more than words can tell. I want to know how things progress, but I'm not sure if I'll read the next few books unless they're free or in a bundle.
This was wonderful as usual. I love getting this series release every week now, and look forward to a light quick read that makes me feel good. The mystery is always something interesting, and helps explain a little more about Missy's life as well as her relationship with Chas and the stores she owns and runs. Great job Ms Durand! Please keep it up!
Missy finally gets to meet the chunky detective's family and someone wants him bad enough to kill one or both of them. Another fantastic quick read for a lunch break or just for snuggle up with a good book time.
In this book we learn a little about Chaz's family and Missy gets to meet them... Plus Chaz's ex-girlfriend.. And wouldn't you know, a murder happens while visiting the family!
I keep hoping this series of novellas will get better but so far, no. There aren't any surprises and I find the dialogue, hmm, I want to say pedestrian but I'm not sure that's the exact word in looking for.
