Gorgeous ex-showgirl Gabrielle Johns, 29, makes a good living as a backroom poker in Reno, Nevada. "Good-old-boys" check out her blond hair and Playmate figure and think she'll be easy picking. Wrong. She has a gift for poker. But having trained years ago as a PI at her father-in-law's investigative firm, people she knows come to her for help. She refers them to her father-in-law, but under the delusion that Gabbi still works for him, Bert puts the cases back on Gabbi's shoulders. On a cold day in January, Ashley Dinsmore, the young wife of a federal judge, asks Gabbi for help. She's being stalked by a man who says he loves her. He has compromising pictures of them “together.” For Ashley, it's a nightmare, one she desperately wants to escape. She hopes Gabbi will be able to get him to stop, and get the pictures, without her husband finding out. As usual, Bert dumps the case on Gabbi's shoulders, putting her squarely in the jaws of a meat-grinder that could cost her her life.
THe story was fast moving and kept my interest for the most part. I got tired of reading about what each character wore or ate. It seemed to drag occasionally and I found myself skipping through the descriptions that didn’t appear to move the story forward.
From the author of the classic KILLING SUKI FLOOD comes a different kind of crime novel, this one a more traditional P.I. tale--but nontraditional in the sense that that P.I. is a feisty, opinionated woman, in fact a former showgirl who knows how to (and is not ashamed to) use her body to her advantage. There's a fascinating mystery at the heart of this book, but the real joy of reading it comes from the characterization of Gabbi and her friends and clients.
I think this may be a good book, unfortunately not for me. There is too much description going on and I could not finish it. For those of you who want a good detailed romance action , this is for you.
