Through the company I work for, with our office based in Philadelphia, there have been opportunities to volunteer and donate to MANNA many times over many years. I appreciated the opportunity to read about the early years of this amazing organization—both the good and the bad.
I had to read this book for a class; these are my personal views and have no affiliation with the program.
This book felt like a propaganda manual for a charity - MANNA. While the work done by the charity may have been incredible, the writing in this guide was clunky and boring. There was plenty of ‘problem solving’ attributed to faith in God rather than truly navigating the complexities of an organisation. Moreover, the author continually failed to address his own positionality. It was a frustrating read, and one which will make me appreciate every other book I pick up that much more.
This real life story of how the organization MANNA developed and changed the lives of people living with AIDS in Philadelphia shows the importance of unconventional thinking and commitment.
