A cop and villian are frozen in a cryogenic prison. Years into the future, Earth is a bland and pleasant place where people are fined for swearing. It's run by a despot, but nobody realizes it. It is into this green, clean, world that Sparton and Phoenix are awakened to resume their former roles.
Thanks to Constance Paras, I was able to add this book to my collection of film tie-in novels, a hobby I started back in the lovely 80's when I was a kid. I've a large collection of these books ranging from the 5 Omen novels, to The Predator (2018).
This is a good adaptation of one of my favourite films although it did teach me that watching many fight sequences in the film is more fun than reading them.
Curious thing is my edition has Richard Osborne as sole writer without a mention of Robert Tine.
Anyhow, not a bad book but the film is more fun and damnit all to hell, I still don't know what's the story with the damned three sea shells.
Aha, just google'd the 3 sea shells, (October 1st 2019 at 5.35pm) err, probably better off not knowing that, anyhow, it's now stuck in my nerd vaults.
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
I'm finally going through my physical tv, film etc. tie in library owned book list, to add more older basic reviews. If I liked a book enough to keep then they are at the least a 3 star.
I'm only adding one book per series (etc.) and I'm not going to re-read every book to be more accurate, not when I have 1000s of new to me authors to try (I can't say no to free books....)
First time read the author's work?: N/A
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
I've always enjoyed the movie, but liked the additional bits of the story offered by the book. After reading IMDB's page for the movie, I get why those parts were cut out, but I feel like the book is better for having them in. Definitely a more complete story.
This is a good adaptation of the movie. Adds some context and some motivations. We see a few scenes that were originally deleted from the movie including John Spartan’s daughter, Katherine.
And no, we do not get an explanation of the three seashells thing.
Enjoyable and fast paced, but I’m not sure I’d have picked this up without the nostalgia of the film from my teenage years. Interesting to see the ideas in their original form and even the inclusion of his daughter. Even if it never quite escaped the shadow of the movie, it was an enjoyable read.
Silly and goofy and fun. Expands on much of the film's backstop, filling us in on things that weren't mentioned explicitly. Includes a number of deleted scenes, as like most novelizations, it was based on an early draft of the screenplay. A mindless action novel, but loads of fun.
I added this because I feel I should be held accountable for all my past sins. I think I read this shortly after the film was released, which would have placed me in about 8th grade. Eesh.
I was unaware this adaptation existed, but a pressing need for a worthy read for Michael's birthday showed me true. It isn't as good as the film, I think, but I still got something out of it.
