Sloane Monroe Stories - Mystery Novella Series (with characters from the main series)
Disclaimer: I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I am a fan of Cheryl’s Sloane Monroe series so I was excited to read this new book. I was not disappointed. The book begins 15 years in the past when Quinn and Evie first become friends. Fast forward to present times when Quinn is faced with dealing with the death of her dearest and closest friend. She makes a vow to find Evie’s killer… no matter what it takes. The story follows Quinn as she returns home… she is faced with her fractured relationships with her sister, Astrid and with her old boyfriend, Bo, who is now a detective working on the case as well as dealing with Evie’s eccentric grandmother, Ruby. Twists and turns keep the reader guessing until the end when the truth is revealed. I liked the book… it was well written and kept my interest. I like mysteries so I had my own ideas as to whom the murderer might be and I enjoyed following Quinn’s search for justice. It was a quick read.. and one you will want to keep reading just to see how it ends. The book ends in a rather open ended way so I was left to wonder if more books are planned for Quinn.
A crappy stupid romance story trying to disguise itself as a mystery. The lead character, Quinn is an idiot. Bo is an idiot. Kyle is an idiot. A book full of morons who do stupid stuff and say stupid things.
Eye for Revenge by Cheryl Bradshaw is a psychological thriller.
First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Kobo Writing Life, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
My Synopsis: Having just returned from a trip to Hawaii with her husband Marcus, Quinn Montgomery finds her world turned upside down. Her best friend is dead. How can this be? How can Evie be dead? Still reeling from this news, Marcus starts another fight about Quinn wanting to go back to work. It is more than Quinn can take, and she rushes out into the night and ends up crashing her car. When she awakes in the hospital, she knows it’s time to leave Marcus. She returns to her home town with her parents, and starts to deal with Evie’s death, which turns out to have been a murder, and her 4-year old son may have been a witness to it.
As Quinn re-acquaints herself with the town, and the people, she also meets up with Bo, her high-school sweetheart, who is now the detective looking into Evie’s death. Apparently his feelings have never changed, but Quinn is going to try and stay clear of him. There are too many hard feelings. But she does need his help, because she is determined to find out who murdered Evie.
As Quinn digs into the murder, and asks questions of anyone in her path, she puts her own life in jeopardy.
My Opinions: I really enjoyed this book. I have not “yet” read anything else by this author, but I will. Her writing is clear, and the plot was good. I liked all of the characters, and they all had merit. Even Evie, although dead, had life in this book. I loved the relationship between Quinn and her sister, which seemed real to me.
For those that know me, I am not a romance reader, but I didn’t mind the attraction between Quinn and Bo. Overall, it was a fast read, and kept me interested from start to finish.
I loved this book! You will be routing for Quinn from the first few pages. Quinn met Evie when they were just little girls in a park. Evie was being bullied by 2 boys. Quinn punches one boy and makes them tell Evie they are sorry and mean it. Ever since then, Quinn and Evie are best friends. Quinn moves away and gets the news Evie is dead. She decides to move back home, leaving her loveless husband and find out exactly what happened to her friend. Her ex boyfriend is now a detective and is investigating her death. Quinn learns that Evie's son was a witness to his mother's murder. Who did he see? Quinn will stop at nothing to find the truth to what happened to her friend.
Another excellent story by this talented author. In this stand alone novel, the main character awakens from being unconscious to find her best friend has been murdered. As she sets out to find her killer, she runs into old school friends and a lost love. Her friends son is mute as he apparently witnessed the murder and she tries to keep him safe as she hunts for the killer. The perpetrator isn't divulged until the last chapter or so and it keeps the reader interested in reading to find out who he/she is.
I got this book and could not put it down, I am a huge fan of the Sloane Monroe series and Addison Lockhart books so was eager to read this and it did not disappoint. It had great characters and an interesting story. It was so good could not put it down. It even had my name in the book even though she was not very observant liked seeing my name in print. Mrs. Bradshaw is a Great writer and I look forward to more books!
I really enjoy Cheryl Bradshaw's books and "Eye For Revenge" is no exception, in fact I think it's one of her best murder mysteries. There is excellent character development, a good deal of suspense, a dash of romance and a surprise ending that I didn't see coming. I received an ARC of this book and found it to be a very enjoyable read and I totally recommend it to mystery lovers or anyone simply looking for a good story to devour.
Expect the unexpected! Another great read from Cheryl Bradshaw. When Quinn's best friend is found murdered, she is bound and determined to find the person responsible for Evie's death. Quinn finds a lot more than Evie's killer when she returns to her hometown. Eye For Revenge contains the perfect amount of mystery with a side of romance.
I have been a fan of Cheryl's books since I first read Black Diamond Death. This one is a standalone and is a fantastic story, I could not put it down. The story keeps you intrigued and guessing. If you love mysteries, you will love this book. I loved the characters and how they all interacted with each other and even the romance!
Quinn returns to her hometown and finds out that her best friend has been murdered, and takes it upon herself to find the murderer. This was a good story with a lot of drama and possible suspects. I thank Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I’m a fan of Cheryl Bradshaw’s Sloane Monroe series and was excited to read this stand alone. This too was a great book with characters that were very likable and well developed. The characters were a bit reminiscent of one of Bradshaw’s other books I’d recently read, but the plot was like nothing she’s written before. Quinn Montgomery wakes from an accident after hearing the news of her best friend’s death. Finding that it was actually a murder, she makes a promise to herself to find out who the killer is and make them pay. Quinn returns home to her small town to investigate and finds many distractions in her old friends, her parents, and her estranged sister, which only add to the complications of finding her best friend’s killer. This book had me suspecting every person in the tiny town until the killer was finally revealed in a murderous showdown. Another suspenseful book by Bradshaw.
The death of her best friend propels Quinnon a quest for revenge. Leaving a loveless marriage she moves back home to her small Wyoming town. she has a chance to renew an old love, make amends with her slutty sister and reassess her life and priorities. That is if she can stay alive.
The major problem with this book is Quinn. She is just a weak main character. Everyone treats her like she is so fragile. They handle her with kid gloves. she alternates from being bitchy to bland. Like moldy white bread, she just doesn't grow on you. The bad guy was easy to identify. Too bad there was no more about Evie the best friend. She was a spitfire worth watching. It is readable if choppy novel. Okay but not great.
The storyline wasn't bad, although it was pretty predictable and I wasn't overly impressed with her writing in general. My displeasure comes from the fact that whoever proof-read/edited this book missed a great deal of errors.
The author makes a big deal about the fact that Quinn and her "sister" aren't really sisters at all, the younger one is adopted - but not more than a chapter or so later the phrase "my sister, my blood" is used to describe their relationship. HUH?
And when describing an event with her soon to be ex-husband, the word "inferior" is mistakenly used instead of "superior". There were several more, mostly grammatical errors, such as an incorrect tense being used, etc.
"Evie didn't like people. Not most of them, anyway" An interesting story but the real power of the book lies in it's characters. It is an easy and quick read and I barely paused in the page turning, pleasantly surprised by so many well drawn and seemingly dysfunctional people. I genuinely disliked them all, marvelling at their stupidity the further I read. It takes quite an artist to rouse such emotion for figures sketched on a page. Certainly worth a try if only to be thankful not to live amidst such smug, silly people. Good fun.
I haven’t read this author before, but decided to read this one based on the 4.5 star rating. I thought the writing was cheesy and just downright awful in places. I didn’t find the characters all that likable and most of dialogue made me cringe. I mean who says things like “How long have you been fornicating with my wife?” Overall, this just wasn’t my cup of tea.
So before going any further I think I should tell you a little about the plot. The story follows Quinn as she tries to find the killer of her childhood best friend, Evie. She's simultaneously going through a divorce (well separation really), working through issues with her adopted sister, learning how to run her newly acquired business (formerly Evie's business), becoming the legal guardian of Evie's son and rekindling things with her high school sweetheart who just so happens to be a defective. To say she's got a lot on her plate is an understatement. I'm always one to root for a strong female but something about her character really rubbed me the wrong way. I'm not sure if it was the way she doted on her high school sweetheart even after learning he was with someone new or if it was just the 'matter of factly' way that she went about things...but there was definitely something there. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the mystery aspect of the story and how the killer turned out to be someone who we would least suspect with a motive that there really was no way of guessing lol. It's a stand alone novel and I'd say one that's definitely worth a read.
To be brutally honest, this is a romance with a murder excuse. It’s not bad at all, I enjoyed it but be aware that if you’re looking for a gritty, deep murder-mystery, this isn’t it.
There’s a very decent and believable romance relationship at it’s core, and it’s actually very good but it definitely feels like it’s the reason the book exists, rather than a sub-plot.
The mystery itself is not exactly impressive, but it’s a story that’s more about relationships and characters, rather than an intense mystery, and those are done pretty well.
This is a solid enough book, it's never going to be called brilliant but it's enjoyable and the characters believable, so I'd still recommend it if you're looking for something that's good, light and easy reading. I don’t think it qualifies as a ‘cozy’ mystery, it’s a bit deeper than that. The romance storyline stands up very well, and is definitely a highlight. It’s not what I’d usually give a 4 out of 5 in terms of quality, but I had a good time with it: it didn’t irritate or bore me anywhere, I liked the characters and the romance so I’m still giving it a 4. I'd say definitely buy it at a discount.
This book had a good story line, & a good mystery. In wasn’t expecting the killer to be who it was. But knew there was something odd about him. The book had me guessing till the end. But I really found the protagonist irritating & annoying. I don’t know why authors write female characters either tough & cold, or warm & stupid. You do know that women can be warm, kind, & intelligent right? This is why I don’t like female protagonists or heroes. They’re always written stupidly.
The protagonist was so annoying, I mean there’s a time for being nice & giving people the benefit of the doubt & a time for questioning someone. She got them muddled up quite a lot. Gave the killer too much credit & the detective who liked her she was awful to. She wouldn’t let him explain what she saw. Turns out she was wrong. But when the killer runs her off the road she acts like oh it must’ve been an accident. Is she thick? Sorry just feel this book was badly written where the protagonist was concerned. Her sister was a complete cow, but even she was much more smarter than her, & she was an idiot. If people want better female characters, why don’t they write them Well? Can’t say it was the best book.
This standalone cozy mystery follows Quiinn from childhood when she meets her best friend Evie on a park playground. As the book begins, Quinn is in the hospital following a single car accident she had after learning Evie has died. After her release, she leaves her failing marriage and returns home to Cody, Wyoming, moving back in with her parents. There, Quinn must face her past, her high school sweetheart, her estranged sister, the news that Evie was murdered, and the life altering changes Evie's will brings. The book is written so that the murderer is suspect early on, negating the mystery option. And because Quinn is still married and Bo is dating someone else, there is very little romance. Overall, the story kept me reading, but it was still disappointing. It gets 3.5 stars.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Pixie Publishing for this partnership.
I was immediately attracted by the cover of this book, you can see the beautiful Quinn.
It all starts when she wakes up in a hospital, she will learn that her childhood best friend Evie has died, murdered and her son will have witnessed it. She's going to want to avenge her best friend and find out who did this murder.
I immediately hooked on the story so captivating, full of suspense and twists and turns and so moving.
I put myself in the shoes of Quinn's character so endearing: how can I not take revenge after the murder of her best friend?
An interesting *enough* listen. I didn't feel like I connected with the characters, but I also found myself confused as to who was who, which meant I was never going to be able to figure out whodunit. The story lines all felt surface-level without reaching any real depth so as the reader I never fully understood them: like Ruby. What the heck? Livid one minute, human the next. I felt like the book ended rather abruptly without any real climax to the story, but still an enjoyable enough listen. Probably won't seek out another Bradshaw mystery, but would happily download a free one for an interesting listen.
This cross between romantic suspense and murder mystery finds a devastated Quinn, searching for the killer of her best friend Evie. Behind the small town respectability, there are secrets and jealousies to be unearthed.
With a brisk place and a flawed but engaging protagonist in Quinn, this story is as much about her battles and transformation as securing justice for Evie. As the pressure and danger mounts for Quinn, she stands her ground, putting her life on the line to avenge her friend.
This is another thrilling story from the versatile Cheryl Bradshaw, who always writes entertaining stories with pace, mystery and great characters.
Another great book by Cheryl Bradshaw. Characters were well developed. Plot twist at the end that I should've seen coming was clever. The editing was great; however, this book contains the only inconsistency that I've ever seen in a Cheryl Bradshaw book. Maybe I read it wrong, or maybe I missed something. I though that Jacob was in Quinn's care since everyone acted surprised that Quinn let the grandmother have him for a visit. But then it was stated that Jacob was staying with the grandmother since she was family. I'm still confused about that part, although I do see that the author has to tuck him away for a lot of Quinn's part of the story.
I almost stopped reading a few chapters in. I have to admit I got Evie and Quinn confused as to which was the protector. Went back and got it straight in my head. That set the tone for my reading experience - confusion and disjointed. The story is good, the characters okay but could stand some development. I hate there wasn’t much more on Evie but I get it. The story is fast paced but slow (if that makes sense). Then...when I least expected...the story zooms off and I found myself more interested.
EYE FOR REVENGE Quinn and Evie closer than sister, now Evie is dead and for Quinn her marriage to Mason was dead. A brutal murder who wanted her dead, a time for revenge, Quinn wanted that and answers. Jacob, the 4 year old son, unable to talk, did he see anything, he wouldn’t really know. Good plot with old friends, friction between sisters, old love’s. Would Quinn find the answer of why her friend was murdered. I liked how the plot flowed, and the tension building to the end. Readers won’t be disappointed.
