The reason I've been reading this book for basically a year is that it is one of the most mind-numbingly dull books I've ever read. I've read other travel books from this era, and while they do get a little bogged down in details from time to time, in this one, it's like the author was trying to cram in as much arcane information as possible. I kept going because I was getting useful info for my books, but it was a painful slog.
