First time reading Russian folk tales, it is so much different than any parables I read before. This book is a collection of all the fairy tales D. Mamin Sibiryak once told his daughter. With every story, the writer teaches his little girl (and readers) to respect those who work hard for their living yet he does not hesitate to mock the arrogant and boastful ones.

Some of my favorite quotes from the book:
- "All this shouting isn't doing you any good at all." - Stingy-wingy-long-nose the mosquito p.27
-- "but let bygones be bygones, I'm not one to harbour ill feelings for long". Vanka-Vstanka's birthday party (p.43)

Quyển sách là tập hợp các câu chuyện mà tác giả người Nga viết và kể cho con mình, Alyonushka, mỗi đêm. Những chuyện kể bé nghe khác người nhất tụi mình từng đọc. Nhiều khi đọc xong chưng hửng mà vẫn buồn cười vô cùng với các nhân vật quen thuộc, từ những loài hoa, các chú chim, con mèo, con gà, cho đến búp bê, thậm chí là trứng ốp la trên chảo hay váng sữa ở bếp cũng có đủ thói hư, tật xấu. Tác giả không hề né tránh việc mỉa mai, kể vòng vo những sự thật đau lòng như cái chết, sự giết chóc các loài với nhau mà dẫn dắt rất khéo léo, rất chân thật.
Mình thích nhất câu chuyện cuối, "Time For Bed", khi Alyonushka bảo rằng mình muốn trở thành một cô công chúa, thế là cái loài hoa nháo nhào tranh nhau xem ai mới là công chúa của những loài hoa. Sau đó, một cô bọ cánh cứng đèo em bay đến gặp ông già Noel. Ông bảo em về nói với tất cả rằng chẳng có gì dễ hơn việc trở thành công chúa, bởi mỗi cô gái đã sẵn là một cô công chúa, và ngược lại. Mình rất thích cách gọi ông già Noel là Father Frost nữa, một cái tên rất mùa đông.


Mình hy vọng có cơ hội tặng quyển này, hoặc tự mình đọc cho những đứa trẻ xung quanh yêu những câu chuyện kể trước lúc ngủ như mình, dù hồi bé chả bao giờ mình được nghe :)

This book was printed in the USSR in 1978 by Progress Publishers. The purpose was to make Soviet stories and books available to an American audience. The premise is that writer Dimitry Mamin-Sibiryak has a daughter Alyonushka and she will not go to sleep until her dad tells her a story. They are generally modifications of classic Russian fairy tales and none of those modifications appear to have been done to appeal to an American audience. Therefore, they retain their distinctive Russian format.
As is traditional in Russia, there is a great deal about the harshness of the winter and the great awakening and rebirth when spring arrives. Most of the stories feature animals behaving in a manner similar to that of humans. They exhibit emotions, posturing and self-centeredness that are all too human. For example, in the story, “The Last of the Flies,” the common flies believe that everything is done for them. In the summer, when the humans open the windows, they believe that it is done so that they can fly in and out of the house.
While these stories can be enjoyed by all, it will help a bit if the reader has some familiarity with the Russian climate and culture.
