The only reason I gave this manga a 3 star rating is because I like some parts of it like the whole chase your dream no matter how weird it is, also I like when books mention the weather and how it makes them feel and what it reminds them of.
the speaking/thought bubbles tho were so random and misplaced it made everything so confusing.

Despite its brief length, The Garden of Words manages to pack a lot of symbolism into its story, as evidenced by the tanka that Yukari recites and shoes as a metaphor for her life experiences.
“In the evenings, before I went to sleep, and in the mornings, in the moment I woke up, I realized I was praying for rain.”
The Garden of Words depicts loneliness through Yukari and Takao's relationships with those around them. Both characters are isolated: Yukari is estranged from her coworkers and family, forced to deal with her problems on her own, and Takao receives minimal support from his family while pursuing his job.
“To me she represents nothing less than the very secrets of the world.”
The two find affection and compassion in one another, among a garden of both greenery and the literal garden of words they create together, which grows very naturally. In a place where age, background, and station are hidden away, Shinjuku Gyoen acts as the perfect sanctuary for two persons drawn together by the seemingly prosaic occurrence of rain, to begin opening up with one another and drive forward the events in The Garden of Words.
“I realize now, I was learning how to walk as well. I haven’t mastered the steps, I fall too. But im on my path, my path... and one day that path... will take me to her.”
Yukai and Takao will always be vital in each other's lives, even when it's "not raining." She hugs him, and he realizes that, while she didn't say much, simply being there every day and spending time with him was her own way of being open. The title becomes evident; the garden speaks for her.

I read this because I loved and adored the movie. (SERIOUSLY! Watch the movie!)
Whilst the ending of this was lovely, I felt like this fell short of the movie, which was nuanced and developed despite its short length, whereas this felt a little rushed and underdeveloped in comparison and I would have loved to see the relationship between Takao and Yukino-sensei grow more.

The Garden of Words had an interesting idea that really sort of fizzled out and then went somewhere uncomfortable. I picked this up after hearing a lot of good things about Shinkai but I have to say I don’t like contemporary fiction so this really wasn’t the manga for me. The tag line “Can a poem save your life?’ was intriguing. This story isn’t.
A young man likes to skip school when it rains (I don’t remember the names, that’s how uninteresting this was to me). He meets a woman drinking morning beers in the park. They talk some and she leaves him with a tanka poem to which he spends many weeks trying to come up with the right response. Over the next several weeks they meet in the park.
They help each other by just being a friend to each other. She encourages him to follow his dream (making women’s shoes) and he helps her heal from the anxiety/nervous breakdown she had after she was accused of something at her last job (but we don’t know what it was)
And now for what really ruined this for me (spoilers ahead) was this beers in the morning woman wasn’t guilty of what she was accused of….until she meets him. Now she starts that she’s only twelve years older than him and we learn she was a high school teacher accused of seducing a student and now she’s considering it with him. This manga wasn’t helped by the fact I read it while there was a nation-wide manhunt for a teacher who did just that. It’s not romantic. It’s an abuse of power by an adult over a teen in their control. To me it’s not even a trope, it’s a crime. So yeah, totally the wrong audience for this one. I need to go pull it off my netflix queue while I’m at it.

The beautiful thing about Shinkai's stories are that aren't plot driven but full of emotions. It's like a gentle breeze blowing against your face. You feel it ever so slightly before it completely overtakes you. The story is very simple. Young man meets distraught woman drinking on a rainy day. She leaves him with a poem, which consumes him as he tries to find the perfect response. It's an unusual idea to write as a story, but I found the manga to be better than the anime. I felt like I understood Shinkai's intentions in this, and the ending was more powerful that way. What a wonderful way to end a story with hope. Must read for fans of Shinkai's previous works 5 Centimeters Per Second and Voices of a Distant Star.

So FYI I did not know this was an adaptation of the film of the same name. If I did I would have totally watched the movie first. I’ve heard such good things about it. I liked the message and the story that was being told here but for me it lacked emotion and depth. The manga lacks what the film probably portrays better.

Ok, sono un pochetto severa con questa recensione ma ora vi spiego il mio pensiero perché ho diverse cose da dire.
Acquistato tramite i consigliati di Amazon, ero super contenta di aver trovato un fumetto autoconclusivo (sì, sono super pro le pubblicazioni brevi e concluse) e osservando il prezzo molto ragionevole, mi sono lanciata dalla trama dolce e toccante, confermato dalla marea di recensioni positive.
Vi dico subito che questo fumetto è stupendo per i temi trattati e l'intensità dei disegni anche se la carta leggermente velata, trasferisce l'immagine nel retro di ogni foglio. Lo stile scelto richiama molto la "classe posata" classica della cultura giapponese e porta a galla un destino molto simile alla realtà.
Due vite che si trovano in un luogo isolato come tappa fissa dalla pioggia.
Due vite che mettono in atto l'argomento del coraggio di seguire i propri sogni e la forza di lottare.

Cosa non va in questo volume? La "fretta"!!! Sviluppando due temi così importanti, necessitava più tempo per argomentare al meglio ogni singola sfaccettatura. La fretta ha reso secondaria la parte "strutturale" mettendo la marcia sulla parte "emotiva". Peccato perché gestendo le cose con più calma e scadenza (anche dividendo il fumetto in due) avrebbe reso l'idea in maniera migliore.
Peccato perché la storia è stupenda.

I was in a distracted mood today and so I decided to read a manga comic – 'The Garden of Words' by Makoto Shinkai and Midori Motohashi.
A teenager who is in high school has a challenging life. His mom is not around at home most of the time. His siblings don't help much. So, he has to take care of the house, in addition to going to school. Everyday after he finishes the house chores in the night, he sits in his corner, puts the table lamp on, and designs shoes. That is his thing, designing women's shoes. He hopes to pursue training in that and have a career in that, after high school. Our teenager has an interesting eccentric quirk. When it rains in the morning, he misses the first period at school, goes to a place which is kind of his sanctuary, and sits there watching the rain fall around, and takes his notebook out and gets back to designing shoes. One day, when he gets to this place, he finds a woman here – a young woman, but older than him. They spend their time in companionable silence, but these rainy days come one after another, and the companionable silence leads to conversation and magic happens. You have to read the book to find out what happens next 😊

How can we not like a book with this title? 😊 Also, there is a tanka poem in the story, and references to the the classic Japanese poetry collection Manyoshu, and Lady Sarashina's diary. More reasons to love the book 😊 Also, the story is beautiful and the artwork is exquisite. The rainy scenes were beautiful and evocative. The first few pages were in colour and they were breathtaking. I wish the whole book was in colour. I've shared the first few pages below for your reading and viewing pleasure.

The Garden of Words is a novelisation of a 2013 animated film of the same name written and directed by Makoto Shinkai. Translated to English by Taylor Engel, it is a story of two lonely souls finding comfort in the company of one another after running into in a garden on a rainy day.
Takao is a 15-year old student with steadfast ambition to become a shoemaker. His parents divorced a few years ago and he has lived with his mother and elder brother since. Now his mother is going to live with her boyfriend and his brother is also moving out to live with her girlfriend. He is quiet and conscientious boy who fills his solitude with part-time job and passion for shoemaking.
Yukari is a 27-year old woman who has been avoiding to go to work after a gossip about her was started. She had been bullied and got depressed since. Every morning she gets out of bed and leaves for work but she ends up going into the park instead as she is unable to overcome her fear. She has lost her appetite and mainly consuming chocolate and beer.
One rainy day on his way to school, Takao decides to skip his morning class and go to a park instead. He meets Yukari who has been skipping her work. Before she leaves, Yukari cited a piece of tanka (Japanese poem) that makes Takao puzzle. He determines to skip his morning class when it rains. During that monsoon season, they continue to encounter in the park on rainy mornings and converse but never formally introduce themselves. When the rainy season ends, Takao stops visiting the park. One day he meets Yukari again at the most unexpected place and discovers about her.
This novelisation has back stories of the two protagonists and some narrators adding more depth to the characters as well as to the story. The epilogue, a slight extension of the original story, gives a satisfying warm hug for someone who has been drenched in the rain after watching the film. The proses are beautiful and enticing. Correspondingly, the translation is eloquent and fluid.
Makoto Shinkai's narrative is very meticulous. I think because of him being an animator, he tries to bring as much visual as he usually does in his anime to his storytelling. It is quite exhaustive so sometimes it leaves me with nothing to imagine but to follow his detailed portrayal of sceneries and emotions.
Along with Man'yōshū poetry, the metaphorical representation of rain and shoes are well befitting to the story. An abundant use of simile might bore some readers as it can attenuate the essence of the story. Me being a total sucker for similes and metaphors, it is a visit to the candy store. Such a joy to read where multiple sentiments are represented with nature and its charm. It is an exquisite book with a bunch of (vague) reminiscences.
I watched the Garden of Words (Kotonoha no Niwa) back in 2017 and has been obsessively in love with it. Its visual are enchanting and the tenderhearted story is deeply affecting. The story of a relationship between a minor and an adult can be cringeworthy but how the story was handled was impressive. I discovered other anime by Makoto Shinkai and his famous works are 5 Centimeters per Second, Children who Chase Lost Voices, Your Name, and Weathering with You. Many people love Your Name and it is quite a global phenomenon but the Garden of Words remains as my absolute favourite.

Simple, Yet Impactful!
The manga focuses on Takao Akizuki, an aspiring shoe-maker, who keeps meeting a mysterious woman, Yukari Yukino at Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden on rainy mornings and gradually falls in love with her.

It's a story about ambition, love, hope, and how wild rumors can wreck a person emotionally from inside-out. With full of emotions and easy-going storyline, you can't help but be drawn to it like a moth to a flame. The story also ended on a positive note which I really liked.

I loved the animation of this, very much. it was so beautiful, uhm, I am talking about the movie. So, here comes the manga, that made me understand it more (or maybe because when I was watching it, i was so focused on the visuals) lol. However, it was emotional, but didn't give me "that" feels.

Dos personajes muy diferentes y a la vez muy parecidos, a quienes acompañaremos por un camino de crecimiento personal y nos dejará la enseñanza de no abandonar a pesar de lo difícil que la situación puede ser o lo que pueda opinar el resto de las personas.

i really liked this story for how short it was. it was emotional, sweet and the art was beautiful. i’m planning to watch the movie soon as well. i’ve noticed that weather is always such a pivotal motif in makoto shinkai’s work, which is really interesting.
there were however some scenes and themes that made me quite uncomfortable at times, which is why i’m taking a star off. it’s walking a very thin line in regards to some topics such as pedophilia that may be triggering for some readers, so it’s definitely not for everyone. but i think i just read this book at the right time and found that i could overlook some of these things / suspend my judgement.

Tình yêu của Makoto trong quyển sách này đạt tiêu chí 4 không =))
Không mãnh liệt. Không ảo diệu. Không lãng mạn. Thậm chí không luôn cả kỳ vọng.
Nó chỉ đơn giản là chính nó. Makoto rất dễ thương khi dùng khái niệm “cô bi” để diễn tả tình yêu. Khác với “luyến” và “ái” là những từ để diễn tả của xã hội hiện đại, “cô bi” là tình yêu đơn phương dành cho một ai đó, trong cô độc. Bởi vì cô độc, nên trái tim họ trở nên chai sần. Bằng các mối lương duyên tình cờ, họ gặp nhau. Rồi họ nhận ra rằng, người kia đã gieo trong lòng họ một tia hi vọng quý giá, giúp họ có thể bước tiếp trên cuộc đời mình. Chỉ cần gặp được người kia, cuộc đời người còn lại vĩnh viễn thay đổi. Tình yêu là như vậy, kết thúc có là gì đi nữa, có đơn phương đi nữa, thì nó nên là thứ giúp ta mạnh mẽ và trưởng thành hơn.
Mình rất thích chi tiết Akizuki với chính đôi tay anh đã đóng tặng Yukino một đôi giày, để cô có thể bước đi trở lại. Đối với Akizuki, đó là niềm hi vọng và lời hứa giúp anh kiên định trên con đường anh chọn. Còn với Yukino, đó là niềm tin và sư cứu rỗi kéo cô ra khỏi vũng lầy mà cô sắp bị nó nuốt chửng.
Nguyện vọng của Makoto Shinkai là dùng câu chữ để thể hiện hết nội dung mà anime không thể truyền tải được khi viết light novel này. Nhưng mình thấy bản anime súc tích và đã diễn đạt được hết tất cả những gì cốt lõi rồi. Sư phụ Makoto lần này coi như thọt =))
May mà lần này bác ý cho cái kết thúc hậu hậu một chút, chứ mà tan vỡ tuyệt vọng như 5cm/s là nghỉ chơi bác luôn T____T

Khác với “luyến” và “ái” là những từ để diễn tả của xã hội hiện đại, “cô bi” là tình yêu đơn phương dành cho một ai đó, trong cô độc. Bởi vì cô độc, nên trái tim họ trở nên chai sần. Bằng các mối lương duyên tình cờ, họ gặp nhau. Rồi họ nhận ra rằng, người kia đã gieo trong lòng họ một tia hi vọng quý giá, giúp họ có thể bước tiếp trên cuộc đời mình. Chỉ cần gặp được người kia, cuộc đời người còn lại vĩnh viễn thay đổi. Tình yêu là như vậy, kết thúc có là gì đi nữa, có đơn phương đi nữa, thì nó nên là thứ giúp ta mạnh mẽ và trưởng thành hơn.
Mình rất thích chi tiết Akizuki với chính đôi tay anh đã đóng tặng Yukino một đôi giày, để cô có thể bước đi trở lại. Đối với Akizuki, đó là niềm hi vọng và lời hứa giúp anh kiên định trên con đường anh chọn. Còn với Yukino, đó là niềm tin và sư cứu rỗi kéo cô ra khỏi vũng lầy mà cô sắp bị nó nuốt chửng.
Nguyện vọng của Makoto Shinkai là dùng câu chữ để thể hiện hết nội dung mà anime không thể truyền tải được khi viết light novel này. Nhưng mình thấy bản anime súc tích và đã diễn đạt được hết tất cả những gì cốt lõi rồi. Sư phụ Makoto lần này coi như thọt =))
May mà lần này bác ý cho cái kết thúc hậu hậu một chút, chứ mà tan vỡ tuyệt vọng như 5cm/s là nghỉ chơi bác luôn T____T

first of all.. this is the first graphic novel i ever read .. leave alone , it's Japanese. so maybe it's not the novel that has a problem .. it's me that didnt get their emotions.
but the art is so nice .. it shows their smiles and sadness very well i liked that about it
let's hope this is the start of many graphic novels to come.
anyhow, i read in some review that there is a movie to the same book.. i might watch it to understand the story better

The art style in this manga is wonderful and I have been eagerly anticipating watching the movie for quite some time. I enjoyed the message of the story but I felt kind of uncomfortable with one of the plot lines later revealed in this. The dialogue was also placed in odd panels which made this hard to read and very confusing. I may still watch the movie at some point and I hope it fixes this story as I felt it was too short and there wasn’t enough to make me attached to these characters.

This book was...questionable. I understand that context in Japan for age of consent is different than it is in the US, but this is a "forbidden love" story between a middle school student and a teacher at his school. It's all kept very PG and there is no lewd content, but the plot itself I find highly questionable. It made me uncomfortable.

Un manga che si basa su una storia d'amore in cui i protagonisti hanno un gap d'età. Trama scorrevole e disegni splendidi, ma la storia é troppo affrettata e la qualità generale dell'opera ne risente. Volume autoconclusivo comunque molto godibile, lo consiglio. Dall'opera é stato anche tratto un bel film animato.

3,5. Al principio me parecía lento, según fui leyendo entendí el comienzo y como se fue desarrollando y me he quedado con ganas de más. Me ha gusta conocer esta historia, a continuación veré la adaptación cinematográfica.

The art was really beautiful but unless I really misunderstood something, she's now guilty of the thing she was accused of but previously not guilty of?!?! How completely inappropriate. He's a teenager.
