My Marvelous Year Three: 1964 pt 2!

Reread for MMY. Although Ditko’s character designs haven’t really stood the test of time, his spidey design is still a favorite of mine. This is a super important story for Spider-Man historians with revelations about Betty Brandt and events that mark a major turning point in both her and Peter’s stories.

Read for an important point in peter’s life story, a compelling drama, and epic battle with Doc Ock! Essential for marvel historians, spidey fans.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #11-16, ANNUAL #1 (The Sinister Six)
*Note: A nifty READING ORDER has been provided at the end of this review

Here, Spider-Man is really allowed to come into his own as a character and achieve more of an arc than was previously possible, all for the betterment of the story.

Peter's intellect is effectively explored in greater detail, as the villains' powers force him to find creative solutions to the obstacles they present. Each story introduces him caught off guard by the new set of powers, forcing him to use his knowledge and creativity, thus setting up a rematch that shows his growth since the beginning of the issue. This newly utilized characteristic really makes Spider-Man a unique superhero and have more of an arc in each issue than before.

This growth doesn't come without consequence, as Stan also uses Peter's intellect to destroy his relationship with Betty Page (as Liz Allen becomes attracted to this very intellect). With Betty suspecting cheating, it creates a tragic irony in his strength costing him the people he loves. Thus Lee effectively expands this loose end from the previous arc, as it builds off the reveal of Betty's big secret she was keeping from Peter... which I won't dare spoil here.

Stan Lee brilliantly ties both of these arcs together, in the annual issue. Each new villain returns in this issue, along with Doctor Octopus from the first in this arc, to found the Sinister Six!
It not only is one of the best made Spider-Man issues in history, it also allows the arc to come full-circle: With the first issue re-introducing Doctor Ock, through him kidnapping Betty Page, and the Annual issue featuring Doctor Ock, once again kidnapping Betty Page, it allows the entire arc to return where it began! Thus, the formula set up in these issues (failure followed by growth) is utilized across the entire arc!

I am finding my stride with Amazing Spider-Man. I am almost jealous that I wasn't here in the beginning. Sure, I wasn't born yet. One really gets the sense of Marvel coming to life. They announced that the following month, 4 February 1964, a new comic would hit the stands. It was none other than Daredevil. This is the heyday of Marvel and one really feels it in the comic books.

Doctor Octopus is set to be released from jail. Spiderman makes a plea with the warden not to. But as is explained, when a man serves his time, there is no keeping him incarcerated.

Doctor Octopus is right back to his criminal ways. Who picks him up from prison? None other than Betty. Wow, this storyline was deeper than I expected. Betty had paid a loan shark, but it was to cover her brother's debt to a gangster in Philadelphia, also incarcerated. He promised Doc Ock $100,000 to be freed. That is why Betty drove the doctor to Philadelphia. Spiderman followed using a spider homing device he created.

The gangster was freed and all ended up on a boat where the $100,000 was going to be paid. THat is where things went awry. With bullets flying, Betty's deadbeat lawyer brother bites it. Another twist I did not see coming. She vows to blame Spiderman for this for eternity. That cancels Peter's plans to let her in on his secret.

In the end, Spiderman saves the day, but Doctor Octopus gets away. Peter consoles Betty. Betty recognizes she was too harsh to Spiderman, but still doesn't want to see him. Peter promises never to reveal to Betty his alter-ego.

Again, the art in this impressed me. I like the bold colors that it is inked with.

The letters remain. Most of the letters supported issue #8, the one i detested. :)

Good stuff here.

Intanto… ah no

Doctor Octopus is back again, and this brings some interesting developments, a few that are symbols to me of how events are setup exactly to match the plot (the one I am talking about here is Spider-man talking to the warden - this just seems a bit too clean, and easy - when I was a teenager, even presuming that I get Spider-man's powers, I don't think I would have that easy knowledge or confidence). That is the kind of thing I see regularly in comics from the 60's and even up into the 80's.

Its ASM #11 and the return of Doc Ock!

Betty Brant has left town and Parker is in a slump; good job Otto is released from prison (a short stay!) to distract his mind. Peter creates a tiny spider-tracker to use to keep tabs on the Doc but as he follows Otto leaving the prison, he sees its none other than Betty there to taxi the Doc to freedom.

Another Ditko/ Lee classic, the title really hits its stride by this point.

Dr. Octopus is back and he has Peter's girlfriend on his clutches! And he ran away! These are so much more fun than I ever expected them to be. It's like a telenovela.
