Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.
With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.
A spreading mist that veils everything...and then you start to doubt what you see - because you have fallen into the trap of - Mysterio! One of the original Lee/Ditko villains that made SM so cutting edge and 'hip' during the first two foundational years. Would love to see Tim Burton's take on Mysterio in a SM movie!
\(★ω★)/ I'm having soooo much fun rereading Amazing /╲/\╭[ ᴼᴼ ౪ ᴼᴼ]╮/\╱\-Man (don't forget the hyphen between "Spider" and "Man"). The campy tone and the exaggeration of everything just adds to its charm and personality. Peter will always be in my eyes the "ultimate" every-man character, he's just so relatable.
On this issue he goes up against Mysterio and the villain's entry is the strongest (in my opinion) so far.
As is always the case, when your heart is so pure, you can do no wrong.
ASM #13 and its unlucky thirteen for Spider-Man as Lee and Ditko introduce Mysterio who has Spidey wanted by the police after pulling off robberies disguised as ol’ web-head. Jameson is in his element here, thinking he’s finally been proven right.
It’s interesting re-reading this and seeing that the 2019 film “Spider-Man: Far From Home” managed to pull through more call backs than I remembered. Though it did not use some the dialogue… “Everything’s great, Liz! If it gets any better I’ll shoot myself!” “Oh, Peter! I always knew you had a great sense of humour!”
NB. In an early issue May referred to paying rent but she clearly states here “pay the mortgage”. 'Tis only a tiny continuity problem I know but worth mentioning how fluid this early run was with the fine details changing (or as Stan “is it Palmer or Parker?” Lee would forget).
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #11-16, ANNUAL #1 (The Sinister Six) *Note: A nifty READING ORDER has been provided at the end of this review
Here, Spider-Man is really allowed to come into his own as a character and achieve more of an arc than was previously possible, all for the betterment of the story.
Peter's intellect is effectively explored in greater detail, as the villains' powers force him to find creative solutions to the obstacles they present. Each story introduces him caught off guard by the new set of powers, forcing him to use his knowledge and creativity, thus setting up a rematch that shows his growth since the beginning of the issue. This newly utilized characteristic really makes Spider-Man a unique superhero and have more of an arc in each issue than before.
This growth doesn't come without consequence, as Stan also uses Peter's intellect to destroy his relationship with Betty Page (as Liz Allen becomes attracted to this very intellect). With Betty suspecting cheating, it creates a tragic irony in his strength costing him the people he loves. Thus Lee effectively expands this loose end from the previous arc, as it builds off the reveal of Betty's big secret she was keeping from Peter... which I won't dare spoil here.
Stan Lee brilliantly ties both of these arcs together, in the annual issue. Each new villain returns in this issue, along with Doctor Octopus from the first in this arc, to found the Sinister Six! It not only is one of the best made Spider-Man issues in history, it also allows the arc to come full-circle: With the first issue re-introducing Doctor Ock, through him kidnapping Betty Page, and the Annual issue featuring Doctor Ock, once again kidnapping Betty Page, it allows the entire arc to return where it began! Thus, the formula set up in these issues (failure followed by growth) is utilized across the entire arc!
The introduction of Mysterio, this is an enjoyable tale that has Spider-Man grappling with a confused mental state that he doesn't realise may be being caused by someone else.
Mysterio yang terkejut, langsung menyerang Spider-Man.

The origin of one of my favorite Spider-Man adversaries. Additionally, Peter's light-hearted private life drama is enjoyable and entertaining until the multitude of real dramas begin, although Aunt May could definitely have more depth of character. The issue itself has received some really cool battle scenes, and the debut of the soon-to-be tragic Brooklyn Bridge is noteworthy. It's also nice to see Jonah being turned on his head here by a Mysterio who is orchestrating the conspiracy he usually accuses Spider-Man of.
Another villain: Mysterio. He disguised himself as Spider-Man for his first crimes. That got everyone thinking Spider-Man was a crook. J. Jonah had a ball with that. Spider-Man was conquered at first. But perseverance (and a little snarky) proved too much in the end for this new villain.
Good stuff here. Peter produced wonderful photographs of the fight scenes between Mysterio and Spider-Man that J. Jonah was happy to pay (half value) for. :)
I really had to suspend disbelief to enjoy this comic. I know that Mysterio is a classic Spider-Man villain, but the way that his is presented, it seems like they just said: let's find a way to knock Spider-Man down, and then find another way for Spider-Man to beat the villain. I suppose that is a common forumula for most comics, expeically for this time period, but I just felt beat over the head with it for this issue.
Komik ini menandai munculnya Mysterio, salah satu musuh bebuyutan Spider-Man.
I was blown away just like half the world probably was when the now classic issue was brand new. I'm still glad Stan Lee & Steve Ditko didn't get around to cliffhanging us yet. Lol The 1st Mysterio was outstanding. A well written, semi novel / graphic novel style comic that made Spiderman the household name he is today. Excelsior, like Stan used to say.
I really loved this issue! Finally, Spiderman met an opponent as talented with gadgets and science as he is! The fight scenes were superb, I loved the art, and the sub-plots with JJ Jameson, Betty, Flash, etc add so much flavour and humanism to the comic.
I'm not much of a Spidey fan, so I read this True Believers copy to introduce myself to Mysterio before seeing FAR FROM HOME next week. Typical Silver Age fare from the early Lee/Ditko team up.
