Rate this book
Welcome to the first release of Typewriter Emergencies, a collection of psychologically damaging and hard hitting furry literature. It's a mad world we live in, a world where we are still uncovering some of the darkest of our secrets. We were asking a lot when we started our submission call. We were asking our authors to really dig the knife into their story; to give us the real maddening details, the secrets, the loss of control. And they did just that. This anthology has a total of thirteen gut-wrenching stories from several talented individuals. It's a collection that drops the reader into thirteen rough worlds without anything to protect themselves, only the leadership of the characters they're following. Each author handles a different aspect of the universe, touring the reader through some rather diverse struggles. Typewriter Emergencies is a journey not lightly made, and one that will definitely leave a deep impression on our readers. Weasel Press is proud to have our first furry collection on the books and we hope you will enjoy every moment this intense anthology has to offer.

This is a strange collection. It has some exceptional stories in it -- notably, "Best of Breed" by Renee Carter Hall and "Rogue" by Phil Geusz. These stories are each gems. The stories overall were mostly strong character sketches with dark edges. Very dark edges. A few of them were just kind of weird -- in the middle of all these highly character-motivated pieces, there's suddenly an all-action vampire-hunter story; then a story that seems to be riffing off of hundred-year-old sci-fi tropes and not quite making them work. I did enjoy how a lot of the stories played with the line between secret-life-of-animals and full anthro, and there was definitely interesting furry world-building in the background of many of them. If you're interested in character-driven furry fiction, then this collection is worth checking out.

Much of the subject matter and styling were just not my kind of thing in the end. All these stories were dark and gloomy in various ways, which is of course a matter of taste and interest. Some of the writing was polished and well done in spite of that, but other stories were heavily laden with grammatical slips, fragments, and even misused words that had not been corrected. As I remarked earlier, these latter examples had the feel of something taken unedited from an online story archive such as SoFurry or something. I can't say "don't read it" because maybe you like this sort of writing. I won't recommend it, however, because I didn't much enjoy it and though I finished it it became more chore than interest.
