Tess Lewis has always been a flight risk when it comes to love. She doesn’t believe in love.
Not love that lasts, anyway.
Tess is a sassy and kind kindergarten teacher who is facing a couple of life-altering situations. One: a possible change of career–she just isn’t sure what she wants to do. Two: unexpectedly becoming the temporary guardian of her 14-year-old niece for the foreseeable future. After a burst pipe in her apartment leaves her in yet another crisis, Tess has to find a place to stay for a few weeks. Just when she is about to resort to a hotel room, Adam Oakley – the star goalie for the Dallas Storm, who also happens to be the one guy who turned down Tess’ advances – steps in to save the day.
Adam Oakley is also at a crossroads in his career: does he stay with the Dallas Storm, where he has found a family among his teammates, or move back to his hometown of Chicago? Oakley has always liked his orderly life, so when the beautiful and strong-willed Tess and her misunderstood niece move in for a month, his world gets tilted on its axis. But Tess and her niece may be the family he needs to stay exactly where he is.
This arrangement should be fine since they are friends, right?
In the midst of steamy shower encounters, endless movie marathons, silly dance moments and vulnerable fireside chats, Tess and Oakley inch closer and closer to ruining their friendship and crossing a boundary Tess never thought she would cross–falling deeply in love with someone.
When the future of Oakley’s career with the Storm hangs in the balance, the prospect of lasting love continues to be a doubt in Tess’ mind. Will Tess’ fear of love derail her chance at a lasting relationship? Or will Oakley move mountains to show her just how much she deserves to be loved?
Because even a flight risk is no match for true love.
Leslie McElroy was raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico but currently resides in Dallas, Texas. She loves her family, cozy, rainy days, and spreading kindness. Leslie has always dreamed of becoming a writer since she was a teenager, but she finally wrote her first novel, Stuck with Me, after being inspired from reading other contemporary romance novels and knowing that she had a story to tell. Leslie loves coffee, reading, and is an introvert at heart. Leslie is a mom of two boys and is married to her college sweetheart. Leslie hopes that through her writing, she can connect with people around the world and spread happiness with the characters and stories she creates.
The cozy rom-com energy pulled me in, but the characters are what really kept me there.
Tess and Oakley had that frustratingly good kind of chemistry where they both clearly wanted each other but kept holding back. When they finally stopped overthinking everything, I was very ready for it.
Oakley was such a standout for me. He had all the golden retriever energy while still being incredibly mature, thoughtful, and secure enough to let Tess be exactly who she was. Tess’s walls made so much sense given what she’d been through, and watching her slowly trust him was lovely. And Lottie? Absolutely adored her. Her bond with Tess and then with Oakley added so much warmth to the story.
I also really liked the easy, cosy feel of this, especially the 90s rom-com touches, Star Wars references, hockey, and the friendships surrounding them. It was the kind of book I could just pick up and happily disappear into for a few hours.
Sweet, swoony, and full of characters I’d happily read more about.

A sincere thank you to Leslie McElroy and her lovely Team for the ARC! 🥰📚
I’m so grateful for the early read. As always, all thoughts and opinions are completely my own. ✨
I ate this book up and then some. As soon as the ARC came through my email I downloaded and started. Tess’ trauma of people letting her down hit hard and Adam not wavering on his love for her was epic. The ultimate black cat x golden retriever characters. A man that is not threatened by a strong willed woman is very swoon worthy. Adam gives Tess the space she needs but also shows her he is not backing down. All the side characters from best friends to the niece added a perfect line up for the story. First time reading a Leslie McElroy book and I’m excited to read more.
I enjoyed reading this book, just shut off my brain and read. No big or hard words or even words that don't exist. I liked reading the beginning and seeing what happend at that vacation. That was a good point to start reading so you get where it all started.
And then you have Lottie, she was one of my favorite characters in the whole book, Tess had so much love for her like she was her own. And then her connection with Oakley was so nice the read, he really became an important figure in her life. The dynamic with Tess and Oakley was nice to read, they both wanted each other but were too afraid to make the first move, and then that 'fuck it' moment was too good.
I would have loved to have read a little more of their lives outside of each other and with their friends, more conversations with their friends and I would have liked to have read a little more about hockey. But overall I liked the friendships and liked reading about all the different characters. I would definitely read more about these different characters.
I absolutely loved this book! I did not want to put it down! I loved everything about Tess and Oakley’s friendship and relationship!
Oakley was a walking green flag in every way possible and Tess was equally as perfect, other than her struggles with love, which is completely normal with everything that she’s gone through. Lottie was such a lovable character! (But please note for the record that I am NOT a fan of Tara!)
13 Going On 30 is one of my favorite movies and I love how much it’s referenced in the book!
Leslie’s writing is chef’s kiss. I truly am so obsessed with this book!
Firstly, a huge thanks to Leslie for having me on her ARC team and trusting me with reading this in advance of it going live to the world!
Truly chef’s kiss! The cadence of the storytelling was impeccable. Had just enough sports to have someone who enjoys sports to be engaged, but as a girlie who knows nothing about hockey-this also did a great job of painting a picture of what a season of being a hockey player would look like.
To any girlie out there that just does things herself, this one is def for you.
This is the 4th book I’ve read from Leslieand I’ve loved every single one of them! I fell in love with Oakley from the BEGINNING, the way he payed attention to Tess and was always there for her at all times was so cute!! The level of spice he brought on did not disappoint🤭. If you love golden retriever energy you’ll LOVE this book🙂↕️. I can’t wait to read future books because I always enjoy every single one I read.💚
Adam Oakley is not a man threatened by a strong-willed woman and he puts in the work to show Tess how much he truly cares about her. That man showed up for her and her niece which spoke volumes to me, but you can’t blame Tess for trying to guard her heart after experiencing heartbreak. Tess slowly let Adam in, but when things are getting too real, she begins to slowly retreat and put up her walls. Shout out to Charlotte aka Lottie, Tess’s niece, who is wise beyond her years, that encourages her Aunt Tess to be honest with her feelings and finally put her happiness first. I wish I had known what the outcome was with Lottie and her mom, although that was a small story in there, I just wanted that loop closed. Especially wanting to know if Tess addressed the concerns with her sister or tried to place a boundary since they didn’t have the best relationship.
I enjoyed every single minute reading this book. Sometimes the black cat/golden retriever trope is a hit or miss for me, but Leslie hit the back of the net with this one. The chemistry was off the charts, Leslie did such a great job having the tension and desire build between the two that when they finally got together, it was nothing but fireworks. Additionally, getting get to see the emotional growth and trust between both was beautiful. If you like a good slow burn and friends to lovers, this book is definitely for you.
I’m definitely in my hockey romance era and I can’t get enough! “The Flight Risk” is another great one I can add to the my obsessed list!
Both Tess and Adam have been secretly pinning for each other but also staying in the “friend-zone”. Tess is a school teacher with trust issues and past trauma from her childhood and relationships. Because of her past, she does not do committed relationships and definitely does not believe in LOVE. Then there’s Adam, he is tall, protective, and the kindest hockey goalie, with all the green flag traits you can think of. When Tess is unexpectedly asked to become the guardian of her teenage niece and then when a water leak forces her out of her apartment, she has nowhere else to go and accepts Adam’s invitation to temporarily move in with him.
I truly fell in love with Adam and Tess and loved watching their love grow. But the star of the book for me was sweet Lottie! That kid has strength that I wish I had when I was her age. I hope we get glimpses of her in other upcoming books in the series!
If you love hockey or sports romances with protective, nerdy and kind MMCs, hurt and guarded FMCs, friends that will fight for you, forced proximity, and friends to lovers then you will love “The Flight Risk”.
Thank you to Leslie McElroy and Luna Literary for this ARC opportunity! I absolutely loved this book!
Tess is the definition of a flight risk when it comes to love, especially that once in a lifetime never ending love , she just wants to have fun this way she doesn't have to worry about getting hurt. After a series of unexpected events leaves her with custody of her niece, a flooded apartment and no place to live. Adam the hockey player she's crushing on, who also turned her down offers her a place to live.
Regretting turning down Tess, Adam sees this as an opportunity to show Tess how he really feels, he starts showing her in all the little ways , making dinner, getting her flowers, hanging out in the couch watching rom-coms geeking out with Lottie her niece over Star Wars. Soon Tess can no longer resist Adam and they cross that line and start dating but the deeper she falls for Adam, the more she starts getting scared that it's only a matter of time before he leaves.
Meanwhile Adam is at a crossroads with his career does he choose to extend his contract and stay in Dallas or does he choose to move back home to Chicago?
Make sure you find out! This book is available today on KU!
WOW, I knew I was going to like this books because Leslie never disappoints, but this book exceeded all my expectations beyond measure.
How can you not love a MMC like Adam who is so utterly devoted to making a woman feel wanted, loved, and cherished. We all want that, don't we? Yes. Yes, we do.
The way he was able to break down her walls and how she finally gave in and started to believe love is real and that she deserved it was such a beautiful moment.
Tess is a strong and independent FMC who from past experiences thought love was a myth or fairy tale concept until she met Adam. He clearly showed how meeting the right person for you if all it takes.
I also loved the found family aspect with them taking care of her niece. He immediately treated her as his own family without second thought. Their friends were also very supportive and gave them the push when they needed it the most.
This story will live rent-free in my head for a very long time with wonderful 90s romcom throwback vibes. Not to mention the Star Wars references. May the Force be with you!
Thank you Leslie McElroy for this ARC

First, I would like to thank the author and Luna Literary for the ARC! :)
I just loved this book! I hope this book gets a sequel or is going to be a series because I just loved the whole book's vibe, how it was written, and the author's style.
Oakley is the typical golden retriever MMC and also maybe the most mature man that I have ever read. I just love how he thinks about relationships, love, hockey, and everything. He is down bad from the beginning for Tess, and he really represents the golden retriever energy. He is really thoughtful and cute but sexy when he needs to be. He is somebody that you can rely on, no matter why or when.
Tess, on the other hand, really gives me black cat energy. Because of her previous experiences, she doesn't want to open her heart again and fall in love. But fortunately, Oakley changes her mind. Also, she is really just amazing because she agreed so easily to take care of Lottie.
Lottie is also a cute character, and I loved the interactions between her and the "adults." I'm a little bit sad about how her story turned out because deep in my heart, I hoped that she would stay with Tess and Oakley.
Also, the friend group was amazing, and I can't wait to read about the hockey players.

First off thank you to Leslie McElroy for the opportunity to read The Flight Risk!
"Patience Tess, I promise I'll be a Good Boy."
I love a good boy moment and Oakley delievers. The Flight Risk follows Tess and Oakley. Tess is a kindergarten teacher searching for more and Oakley is the Dallas Storms’ brooding goalie.
After an almost one-night stand Tess tries to distance herself from the handsome goalie Oakley. Oakley is secretly already obsessed with her and trying to find a way to break the tension that started after that night.
As fate would have it, Tess's apartment folds and she needs a place for her and her niece today. Of course Oakley says yes without any hesitation. Is this the in that he's been looking for to correct his mistake from the year before? Will Tess finally allow for her own desires to be fulfilled? Only time will tell.
💚Friends to lovers 💚Pro hockey goalie 💚Black cat x golden retriever 💚Roommates 💚Single guardian (her!) 💚Forced proximity 💚Found family 💚Slow burn with ALL the delicious tension
If you’re searching for a comfy slow-burn romance with all the spice, The Flight Risk is for you and it's out now!
This is my first book I've read by Leslie McElroy and it certainly won't be my last! Thank you so much to Leslie and Luna Literary for the arc.
Tess is such a bad ass fmc and I loved her so much. Her relationship with Lottie is one of my favourites in the book. She is a little bit of a complex character but this fits really well with Oakley and he gives her the space that she needs and doesn't rush her into decisions.
Oakley was the cinnamon roll mmc that we all need. A golden retriever goalie is the man of my dreams and he really hit. The yearning that this man delivered was top tier and when he finally made the move, it was so worth it.
The spice in this book was so much fun. It was super flirty and fast paced, it really made me not want to put the book down!
This book was super easy to read and I really enjoyed the flow of the writing. I really liked the found family aspect of this book and I really wish we saw more of it! If you're looking for something fast paced and fun, this book is definitely for you. Please do yourself a favour and pick this one up!
A review of an advance reader copy from the author..

What to Expect: ~Friends to lovers ~Roommates ~Slow Burn ~Mutual Pining ~Pro Hockey Goalie ~Single Guardian ~Found Family ~Dual POV ~ "Good Boy" ~Black Cat/Golden Retriever
Golden retriever goalie Oakley is swoon worthy! It took me all of a day to start and finish this book that’s how good it was. Oakley is the epitome of what you hear about hockey goalies, they are quiet and quirky and I love that about him. Tess felt so real, the epitome of soft and nervous when things get real but bold in life, that felt really relatable on a deep level. I wish I could read this book again for the first time, such a fun read. Can’t wait to see what comes next!!
ARC read in exchange for an honest review courtesy of Luna Literary
This book was so much fun! It was jam packed with longing. So much yearning if nothing had happened I would’ve spontaneously combusted. I loved how out of his element Tess made Oakley. His awkwardness made him feel like such a purely Good Dude. Alternatively, I loved that Tess was strong and had her life (for the most part) together. She didn’t need him to complete her and vice versa, but together they created magic! I laughed, I cried, I got mad, and then I got happy all over again. I love a sensitive strong hockey man! Adam Oakley has scored himself a high rank on the list of golden retriever yearning hockey guys. If you like he falls first, found family, tension, and banter then you will love this one!
I was lucky enough to be able to beta read this one and I loved it so much!
This is such a cute, fun, black cat x golden retriever romance with all of the tension and banter you could possibly want. Tess and Adam are adorable and I loved watching them fall for eachother.
This one is a SLOW BURN but when I tell you the spice hits…. My gosh does it HIT!
What to expect: Friends to lovers Pro hockey goalie Black cat x golden retriever Roommates Single guardian Forced proximity Found family Slow burn
Available now!
Thank you so much Leslie for allowing me to beta read for you!
Leslie has done it again! I received my ARC and enjoyed this so much! I love the ending and the story of Oakley and Tess..."No matter how much you push back, I'm here for you." Surprises you don't expect - it was fun!
I think I’m part of the minority here, but this was just fine 🤷🏻♀️
Overall, The Flight Risk is a super sweet hockey player romance, but Tess and Oakley’s story just didn’t wow me.
While I enjoyed their romance well enough, I never really felt that invested in their relationship. It was a cute read, just not one that’s going to stick with me.
𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗧𝗢 𝗘𝗫𝗣𝗘𝗖𝗧: Friends to Lovers Roommates Pro Hockey Goalie Black Cat x Golden Retriever Found Family Single Guardian Slow Burn Romance Mutual Pining
Tess is a preschool teacher with a serious crush on hockey goalie Adam Oakley… who has already turned her down once. Then life throws her a curveball when she becomes guardian to her niece, her apartment floods and Adam offers them a place to stay.
Adam is EVERYTHING. A pro hockey goalie, golden retriever energy, ridiculously respectful and basically a walking green flag. He regrets turning Tess down and spends the whole book slowly breaking down the walls she’s built around her heart, whilst treating her like an absolute princess.
I loved their chemistry, but also their awkwardness and clumsiness in the early stages. The dancing scene? 🥹 He danced with her! And to Taylor Swift no less!
So many found family vibes, lots of moments that had me smirking and feeling giddy, and an absolutely epic love story. This one just made me happy. 💚
This was such a cute love story. I love how amazing and soft the MMC is. He has such a good heart and is so attentive. And who doesn’t love a 6’7” sexy hockey player? The FMC has some past trauma that limits her but she eventually breaks the chains and learns to love.
hits quite like a 6’7” golden retriever hockey goalie… who decides that breaking through a guarded woman’s defenses is the only play that matters. 🏒🥅✨
The Flight Risk by Leslie McElroy is an absolute treat of a sports romance. It blends the cozy comfort of forced proximity with incredible banter, mutual pining, and a found-family dynamic that completely stole my heart.
Tess Lewis is independent, fiercely protective of the people she loves, and convinced that lasting love is a fairytale meant for everyone else. When life throws her a curveball, when she becomes the temporary guardian of her teenage niece, followed immediately by an apartment plumbing disaster… Tess is left scrambling. Enter Adam Oakley… the star goalie for the Dallas Storm, an unapologetic green flag, and the man who gently pumped the brakes on her advances a year ago.
When Oakley opens his home to Tess and her niece without a second thought, the resulting roommate arrangement is pure torture in the best possible way... Their chemistry is electric, but watching them navigate the awkwardness of dancing around feelings they have both secretly harbored is what makes this story shine. Oakley does not just tell Tess she deserves to be cherished… he shows her through every quiet act of service, late-night movie marathon, and patient reassurance.
Beyond the romance, what truly elevates this book is the bond formed with Tess’s niece, Lottie. Oakley’s natural, caring presence in both of their lives adds so much heart and warmth, turning a chaotic living situation into a genuine sanctuary. When the slow burn finally gives way to passion… the payoff is scorching, earned, and deeply emotional.
If you love cinnamon-roll athletes, black cat x golden retriever energy, and sweet, steamy stories about learning to trust…then add this one to your shelf!
A huge thank you to @authorlesliemcelroy and @lunaliterary.management for my ARC! All thoughts and opinions are 100% completely my own; no AI was used.
First of all I want to thank Luna Literary and Leslie McElroy for the ARC of The Flight Risk :)
I will rarely if ever turn down a hockey romance so this was an easy yes and a wonderful read :)
I've never read a book by Leslie McElroy before so I didn't have any expectations going into this book but I wasn't surprised at how much I enjoyed this story :)
Adam is a green flag MMC, he's like a golden retriever but in the best way possible ;) He's committed to making Tess feel seen and loved. Don't we all want that... Yes, we do. Love Adam!
Adam was able to break down Tess's walls over time and when she finally gave in and started to believe that she deserved to be loved the way Adam loves her was a powerful and beautiful moment that I'm thankful we got to witness
Tess is a strong and independent FMC/Woman who is skeptical of love but that changes when she meets Adam. He constantly showed up for her and proved that all it takes is meeting the right person for you makes all the difference in the world
Found Family is one of my favorite aspects in books but specifically in hockey romances because of the way everyone accepts each other's partner or significant other. Tess and Adam's friends gave them pushes when needed (relate to that, thanks mom haha) while also knowing when to be supportive was fantastic. Them taking care of Tess's niece and not hesitating was a pretty amazing moment. I love the relationship between Adam and Lottie, they are kindred spirits and the way he loves her like she's his own just melted my heart :)
I absolutely loved this story! I hope this turns into a series because I'd love to learn more about the Dallas Storm Hockey Team :)
Y'all... all the Stars Wars references... YES PLEASE! I ATE THOSE UP! May the Force be with you :)
Again, thank you Luna Literary and Leslie McElroy for the ARC of The Flight Risk :)
The Flight Risk was my first book by Leslie McElroy, and what a great read it was! The story was easy to follow, the characters were relatable, honest and funny, and I found myself getting attached not only to the main characters but also to the wonderful supporting cast.
Oakley completely stole my heart! He is full of green flags and honestly feels like every girl’s dream guy. The way he cares, loves and shows up for the people around him made it impossible not to fall for him.
Tess was such a relatable character. She is confident and strong, but she also has walls up after being hurt too many times. I loved watching her slowly let those walls down and give herself another chance at love. Her journey was a beautiful reminder that sometimes we have to take a risk and let people in, even when we’re scared of getting hurt again.
And then there’s Lottie! She was such a special character, and I absolutely loved the bond between her and Tess. It showed just how much Tess was willing to give to be there for her niece. Lottie brought so much fun, warmth and heart to the story, and watching the relationships between Lottie, Oakley and Tess grow, both individually and together, was one of my favourite parts of the book.
I’m not giving away any spoilers because I think this is one you need to experience for yourself! If you love relatable characters, a swoony green-flag MMC, emotional growth, family connections and a romance that makes you smile, add this one to your TBR!
Overall, I really enjoyed The Flight Risk. It was a heartwarming, funny and enjoyable read, and I’m definitely looking forward to reading more from Leslie McElroy!
ARC review — Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book.
The flight risk is a romcom through and through, a combination of butterflies fluttering in your belly, a love story that melts your heart and has you giggling out loud non-stop (yes, I loved the shelf breaking scene). We follow a golden retriever green flag of MMC, Adam Oakley, who shows up without fault. Being more introverted, and needing more then just hookups, he made the wrong impression on Tess. While she thinks he was not interested, he has been pining and yearning since the day they met, just like her. Thank god we have amazing supporting girl gals that help cupid a little. McElroy must have an amazing support system, as the love and genuinity is touchable on the pages.
With her appartment flooding, Tess and her 14yo niece Lottie need a place to stay. And her bestfriend arranges for them to stay at Oakleys. Adam steps up, shows Tess she is worth so much more than she thinks, and also bounds with Lottie in a big brother/uncle kind of way. Both girls have had a rocky past, and the way he shows up for them, shows them what love and friendship is about is truely beautiful. Tess never thought she would open her heart for anyone. That's the only way to prevent it from breaking. But the slow and steady presence of Adam shows her love might be the most important risk one can take.
The book is an endeering hockey romance that shows that love can heal a bruised and beaten up heart, and that love can be the ultimate risk yet most fulfilling if done right.
Thank you to the author and Luna Literary for the opportunity to arc read this book. All thoughts are my own. This ranged between a 3.5-4.
When I first started reading, I forgot that this wasn't a college hockey romance, based on the interactions of the MMC and FMC.
I do love when the MMC is a golden retriever and is just an all around good guy. One of my favorite tropes is forced proximity and extra points when it turns into roommates. Adam really showed up for both Tess and Lottie, which is always a good time to read. Lottie, definitely needed some stability, based on how her mother treats her. That being said, I do wish there was a bit more to the story of Lottie's mom. That wrapped up quickly and in a nice little bow.
It almost read as second chance, which is another favorite of mine. Adam was 100% into her, which Tess didn't really see because of him turning him down. However, once he continuously showed up for her and Lottie, her walls came down - I liked seeing the two of them bringing the best out in each other.
Found family is one of my favorite part of hockey romances and this didn't disappoint.
Advanced Reader Copy review I ATE 👏🏼 THIS 👏🏼 UP. 👏🏼 Leslie McElroy crushes it, yet again, with this continuation of the Dallas Storm family. The prologue had me absolutely hooked. I LOVED that it just dropped us right in the middle of the trip to Telluride and allowed us the chance for things to feel unexpected, just like they felt for Adam Oakley (and Tess, for that matter) when Tess sorta.... puts herself out there.
This is one of those "I should be sleeping but I just need one more chapter...." type reads. The MMC is the biggest walking green flag ever - he is ADORABLE and so thoughtful. I love how he is described and Leslie does an excellent job writing his appearance in a way that is so easy to imagine.... the slight occasional scruff and how it feels... those veins in his forearmsss AGHHH. GIRL. GIRL.
I already can't wait for the next book. If this author and this series is not already on your radar and you consider yourself a lover of romance, especially sports romance, and ESPECIALLY hockey romance.... Honey, what are you doing???
