Las glorias y pasatiempos de Srimati Radharani

Rate this book

Finished reading “The Glories and Pastimes of Radharani” (Volume 1) by Bhakti Purusottama Swami.

Just like Krishna is the fountainhead of all forms of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, in the same way Radharani is the fountainhead of all forms of goodness like Lakshmi, Rukmini, Satyabhama, etc. She is mula-prakriti, or the original prakriti.

But people in general (me included) had little knowledge of Radharani. It was Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu who spread the glories of Srimati Radharani among the common people. The subject matter of Radharani is very confidential: even the Vedas only mention Sri Radha in brief. That’s why Lord Krishna personally came to this earth to explain radhatattva and Srimati Radharani’s pastimes to everyone. Radharani is not some ordinary lady or even some special lady of this material world with whom Lord Krishna was having His pastimes. She is the pleasure-giving potency (Hladini-sakti) of the Lord, rendering service unto Him eternally in the material and spiritual realms.

This book is divided into ten sections with 57 chapters in all. Some chapters are only half a page long. In the eleventh section, the author has compiled 8 prayers that serve as meditations on Radharani. The book is strewn with beautiful drawings/pictures - some coloured and some monochrome. The stories about the pastimes of Radharani and Lord Krishna’s untainted love for Sri Radha, not only redefines true/selfless love, it leaves you longing to know more about the time Lord Krishna and Sri Radha walked this earth (in human form).

Radha and Krishna are one and the same, but They have assumed two bodies. Thus They enjoy each other, tasting the mellows of love.

P.S. I was browsing through Amazon and spotted this book on Radharani. The hand painted book cover caught my attention and literally had me transfixed. The book cover of Volume 2 was even prettier. I added both these books to my wish list. In Mar ‘25 when my (school) friend Seema asked me that what would I like as a birthday present, I asked her to gift me Volume 1 of this book set. She said, why just volume 1, I’m sending you both the volumes, and my joy knew no bounds.

Beautifully assembled two-volume work that honors its subject with depth and devotion. It is a treasure for anyone seeking to understand the heart of Gaudiya Vaiṣṇava theology and the supreme position of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. The subject matter requires a devotional disposition; readers unfamiliar with Vaiṣṇava theology may at times feel the sheer intensity of emotion and symbolism is overwhelming.
