I was happy to finally get my hands on Miras' background story. However, if I haven't expressed exactly how much I despise Lucian, please let it be made perfectly clear here. The amount of manipulation is unreal and exactly what you'd expect from him.

Finally, understanding how Mira ended up with Lucian to begin with was interesting because I definitely wanted to understand that part and what transpired. Her training seemed exactly what you'd expect. The banter is always there with her, and I love that. However, watching her grab hold of something and having it ripped away was heartbreaking. You can tell it broke her, and blood being spilled was the only answer.

I do wish instead of the arguing something valuable would have been said. Although, it technically was, it wasn't clear enough to make a change in the circumstances.

"People rarely understood that endings weren't created in the moment someone pulled the trigger or lit the match. They were created months earlier, sometimes years earlier, by every selfish choice they convinced themselves no one would remember."

"People loved convincing themselves they were good."

"If you made a decision, shouldn't you have the courage to witness its ending?"

"Fear had a remarkable way of preserving memories people would have given anything to forget."

"Fear was considerably more reliable than love."

"Memories were fucking useless when they refused to exist."

"You never truly defeat your teacher until you end them."

“Because sometimes you have to think beyond what you want.”

"If we’re divided, they’ll use it. If we stand together, they can’t.”

"...there wasn't much about my life that wouldn't have kept a therapist employed until retirement."

The Voss Assassin by J.R. Sawyer pulled me in from the very beginning. This prequel gives us a deeper look into Mira Voss and how she became the deadly assassin we know, and honestly, her story was heartbreaking but also incredibly empowering.
I really enjoyed seeing Mira navigate the memory loss, trauma, and brutal training under Lucien Voss. There was so much tension throughout the story, and I was constantly wondering what was going to happen next. The characters are morally gray, the betrayals kept me guessing, and the whole web of loyalty, secrets, and manipulation made this such an intense read.
I also loved how much this added to the Web of Lies world. There was plenty of action and suspense, but also a lot of emotional depth that made Mira's journey feel even more meaningful. The pacing kept me hooked, and I never felt like the story dragged.
If you love dark romance, strong/badass heroines, suspense, morally gray characters, and a story filled with secrets, betrayal, and tension, definitely add this one to your TBR!
I received an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This is Mira's story and how she became Lucien's greatest weapon in his journey for revenge.

This book shows us how much the betrayal destroyed Lucian, to a point where he is willing to use a child and train her to destroy the people that loved her without her knowing. He let the betrayal he went through justify the destruction of innocent lives. And Mira becomes an unknowingly willing participant, wanting Lucian's acceptance and praise more than anything, not knowing she's being manipulated to fight against the family she lost that Lucien destroyed.

I loved this story so much, I couldn't put it down, felt their suffering and still couldn't manage to hate Lucien as much as I did in the first two books. I now understand how Mira ended up being what she was in the first book. Each story from this series helps understand more some of the events that happened in the first two books. I can't wait to reread them and see how different my interpretation of the story will be. Thank you so much for this opportunity.

The Voss Assassin: The Story of Mira completely broke my heart in the absolute best way possible.

Having already seen who Mira becomes in the later books, getting to go back to the very beginning and witness her journey was everything I didn't know I needed. Seeing her transform from a girl with no memories into a lethal assassin—and understanding the exact foundation of the complex, intense dynamic between her and Lucien—adds so much depth to the entire series.

R. Sawyer weaves a dark, emotional, and high-stakes origin story that keeps you completely hooked. The character development is raw, the sacrifices are heavy, and the emotional payoff is massive. If you love dark fantasy, morally gray bonds, and deeply compelling character arcs, this is an absolute must-read. 5/5 stars!

Love. It was a behind the scenes look at how Mira was raised. How she thought and what her weakness are that she herself didn’t even know she had. You must read to find out .
