Kings and Sorcerers #3

The Weight of Honor

Rate this book
“An action packed fantasy sure to please fans of Morgan Rice’s previous novels, along with fans of works such as The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini…. Fans of Young Adult Fiction will devour this latest work by Rice and beg for more.” --The Wanderer, A Literary Journal (regarding Rise of the Dragons) The #1 Bestselling series! THE WEIGHT OF HONOR is book #3 in Morgan Rice’s bestselling epic fantasy series KINGS AND SORCERERS (which begins with RISE OF THE DRAGONS, a free download)! In THE WEIGHT OF HONOR, Kyra finally meets her cryptic uncle, and is shocked to discover he is not the man she expected. She embarks on a period of training which will test her stamina and her frustration, as she soon encounters the limits of her power. Unable to summon her dragon, unable to search deep within, and feeling an urgency to help in her father’s wars, Kyra doubts if she will ever become the warrior she thought she was. And when she meets a mysterious boy, more powerful than her, deep in the forest, she wonders what her future really has in store for her. Duncan must descend the peaks of Kos with his new army and, vastly outnumbered, launch a risky invasion on the capital. If he wins, waiting behind its ancient walls, he knows, will be the old king and his nest of nobles and aristocrats, all with their own agendas, all of them as quick to betray as they are to embrace. Unifying Escalon may, indeed, be harder than freeing it. Alec, in Ur, must tap his unique skills in the forge to aid the resistance if they have any chance of defending against the looming Pandesian invasion. He is awestruck when he encounters Dierdre, the strongest girl he has ever meet. The time she has a chance to make a stand against Pandesia, and as she bravely faces off, she who wonders if her father and his men will have her back this time. Merk finally enters the tower of Ur, and is stunned by what he discovers. Initiated into its strange codes and rules, he meets his fellow Watchers, the toughest warriors he has ever encountered, and he finds that earning their respect will not be easy. With an invasion looming, they must all prepare the tower; yet even all its secret passageways may not keep them safe from the betrayal lurking from within. Vesuvius leads his Troll nation across a vulnerable Escalon, devastating the land, while Theos, enraged at what becomes of his son, is on a rampage himself, and will not stop until all of Escalon is aflame. With its strong atmosphere and complex characters, THE WEIGHT OF HONOR is a sweeping saga of knights and warriors, of kings and lords, of honor and valor, of magic, destiny, monsters and dragons. It is a story of love and broken hearts, of deception, ambition and betrayal. It is fantasy at its finest, inviting us into a world that will live with us forever, one that will appeal to all ages and genders. Book #4 in the series--A FORGE OF VALOR--is now also available for pre-order! “If you thought that there was no reason left for living after the end of the Sorcerer’s Ring series, you were wrong. Morgan Rice has come up with what promises to be another brilliant series, immersing us in a fantasy of trolls and dragons, of valor, honor, courage, magic and faith in your destiny. Morgan has managed again to produce a strong set of characters that make us cheer for them on every page.…Recommended for the permanent library of all readers that love a well-written fantasy.” --Books and Movie Reviews, Roberto Mattos (regarding Rise of the Dragons)

Help me, I'm drowning in horrible editing, gross repetitive narrative, and TSTL characters. All of them. I can't think of a single character in this series that has at least the intelligence of a dried bucket of paint.

We've reached the "everything goes to shit" stage of the series. And it's kind of laughable, how much eyerolling I'm doing. If I ever denied that I'm addicted to reading, the fact that I'm reading this proves it. There's nothing else on my kindle, and I'm on vacation in the middle of the mountains, with no Internet. It's either finish this series or read the label of my shampoo over and over.

Gimme book 4!! A tad bit slower than Rise of the Valiant (book 2) but only because most of the characters have found their destination for the moment. A couple of our main characters finally meet in this installment which was exciting. Kyra finally meets her uncle at the Tower of Ur (home of the watchers) and I’m so intrigued with the tower and hope we learn more about its origins in the books to come. Escalon is fighting towards gaining their freedom and the war against the Pandesians has officially begun with a new king taking the reigns.

Action packed with lots of battles and full of twists and turns. This series is quite addicting. I still highly recommend the audiobook version! After this ending I’m a little devastated and crushed… it makes me question everyone and everything. I’m excited to see where we go from here!

I do like a lot about this series. I like Kyra and her goals to support her father in freeing her country from a despotic ruler. I've read this far and am interested in finding how the story turns out. I would give this series a four star rating except Rice's need for an honest reading group and a good editor to provide feedback on character development and inconsistencies in how she moves the story forward. I might be more forgiving of this if I thought she was trying to cram a big story into a trilogy. But that's not the case here. So, I will keep reading as this series progresses. I think Rice is a talented writer with good ideas that fall a bit short in execution.

I am generously giving this series 3 stars because the story itself is good... but oh baby jeebus on a stick is it rough to read with its abysmal lack of editing and every character-section ending with a CLIFFHANGER! I am also getting really tired of the deus ex machina 'saves'.

At least this time, when people were so certain they were going to die, they actually died. I think. I'm probably not reading the next one to find out.

A great story line but......

I wanted to immerse myself in this series but find that I am getting more frustrated with each book. The reasons are redundancy and storyline mistakes. The story line mistakes really bother me and throws off my concentration, especially when they are involving pertinent parts of the book. You can't say one one page that Duncan has a few hundred soldiers then the next page say as he and his soldiers lay down their weapons you can hear the sound of thousands of swords hitting the ground. If the redundancy from chapter to chapter as the story changes characters and the storyline mistakes aren't bothersome I say read this series, I do enjoy the charecters.

I was lucky enough to have been given this book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes, it could do with better editing but it is still great storytelling.

Its cast of characters each play a role in the overall story and gradually it is revealed. There are many battles, magical moments and mysteries yet to be solved.

Kyra's part is the most interesting and maybe the most important, though the rest of the characters have their own importance to the plot. I like how it all comes together.

A fast-paced and enjoyable read.

Highly recommended.

Much better than the previous one. Perfect? No, but the story becomes more and more captivating, we discover that the principal characters are not exempt from death after all, and new mysteries come our way while old ones are not always uncovered. Well there is still the annoying repetitions, but really I found I could ignore them in this book.
PS: what is the eye color of Kyle? Yellow, gray, crystal blue... ?

Seriously?

Are these books edited at all? The mistakes were so bad it affected the flow of the story. The plot is getting more and more juvenile in the subject. If I read the word 'honor' one more time I would have hurled. Morgan should be careful lest he start sounding like one of those Viking crazed nationalist white supremacist. This story is just dragged out with introducing unnecessary plot devices. Enough already. It should have just been a trilogy.

Third book in a series. Its really gets interesting after every chapter in this book. This book ends with so many twists and keeping thrill for the next one. My views on main characters:

Kyra - Definitely she is leading towards her destiny. The way she has conquered all the challenges till now, its fascinating to see how she gets all shattered things together including her dragon, her father, her country and a new twist - her love.

Dunkan - For sure Dunkan has been riding on a glorious path as long as he keeps on as a worrier. Why did you go for the defensive way man? Its for sure true that you need to lead things with abilities that you are best at. Seems like he has some role to play in coming parts but lets see.

Merc - Still not clear what his role in here. I just hope he has something important to do in coming books.

Diodra - I am really surprised with the rise of this character. I never imagined this character would be so strong. With big waves coming to her - fingers crossed.

Alex - Based on skills, he has built miracle in his first encounter with Pandisions. With a new twist with his destiny, it would be interesting to watch out for his adventures and his love flick with Diodra.

Vasuvious - I hate when author builds a character and leave it without any meaning at the end. I had a doubt about this character and it came to disappoint as expected.

Eden - Not sure what he is doing in the plot.

This is getting interesting and looking for new adventures in coming books in the series.

I think Morgan Rice is a really good writer. I love her storylines, rich with texture, lots of drama and excitement. But I have to say that I read the first 3 books in this series and I found myself getting annoyed...everybody in the book "shrieked, shrieks or gives a shriek", whether they are falling off something, getting murdered or hurt with the weapon of another. There is so much redundancy in this set that I just could not tolerate going on to finish the story...the shrieking was getting on my nerves. I think perhaps I now have a punctured ear drum from all the shrieks.

I wish people screamed, groaned or moaned in pain...perhaps even bellowed their unhappiness, growled with or even died quietly with fluttering eyelids. As for the story's heroine...Kyra...she hasn't the brains God gave a duck! She learns nothing...from what happens before when she didn't listen to her mentors, teachers or whatever...she just heads off into the sunset...typical teenager. Sigh. She's supposed to have godlike powers - being more than human...she's not supposed to react, well, like ME!!!

Thanks, Morgan Rice. I will try another book in the future...but this series...Yuck...try the thesaurus...they really do help. In school, in business when you write - every teacher told me over and over NOT to be redundant...there is a wealth of words in our language, which is what makes it so hard to learn as a second language...shoot for the fences!

Wow, I was honestly shocked by this book. I wasn't expecting what happened. The sudden romance between Alec and Dierdre and the other couple, Kyra and Kyle. I feel like those could have been worked on a little more. I liked the overall story and the urgency it held. But I did feel this particular book fall off the cusp of the last few. I am very upset about how everything just ends though, I get that the author wanted to build suspence and leave it on a cliffhanger for all the characters, but I feel like it went a little too far. The whole ending is my example. Theos? -dead. Arivin? -dead. Vesuvius? - dead. Vidar? -dead. Kyra? -dead. Merc? -sees the Sword of Flames? Duncan? -betrayed. Aiden? -kidnapped. Baby dragon? -somehow an adult dragon? The ending really has me wondering if the author just wanted to end the series there, but since there is three more books after this one, I'm not sure. I will continue to read this series, but if the next book says "ha just kidding they are actually alive" I might lose my marbles. My hopes for the rest of this series has be disapated.

Another thing I have been noticing about the overall series is that there are a few very noticable spelling and grammer mistakes. I can't remember when I bought the series (probably a few months before the release of the last book since it is the only one I do not have), but I hope that these mistakes have been taken care of in more recent re-releases.

Buku ketiga dari siri novel Kings and Sorcerers, bergenre high fantasy (sword and sorcery).

Akhirnya, penduduk Escalon terpaksa menghadapi dua musuh serentak.

There are some really awesome things about this book and some really crappy things about it. If I couldn't sufficiently skim over the endless irrelevant details and 'fast forward' through the parts that should have been edited out I would have quit the series.
Pros- I like the development of Diedra's character. Pros - Merk is interesting and he is finally doing something slightly interesting. Con - so many character switches and sides stories that I honestly skimmed through the boring chapters with characters I could care less about (ie the troll king and sometimes Duncan/ his youngest son). Con - Kiera's training is boring and seriously seems pointless even at the end. Con - the 'cliffhangers' that each chapters ends with is repetitive, predictable, and just annoying after the third time. Pro - seeing inside the Tower of Ur was nice. Pro - the dragon plot line, Con - the dragons should have made up only 1 chapter.

Pro - it's about time some of the separate characters interact. Con - still waiting to see how Merk plays into the larger plotline of this series. Overall, I kept wondering if this series was a rip off of 'Game of Thrones' but the characters' journey through the river with all the strange animals finally told me it isn't.

Escalon faces its greatest threats, both expected and hidden, as Kyra, Duncan, Aiden, Diedre, Merck, Alec and Duncan’s loyal elite follow their destined paths. Each encounter self-discovery, their trust challenged like never before.

Emboldened by courage of immense depths, the sacred vows of Honour and Valor drive them towards their fate.

Morgan Rice has once again delivered. You will find yourself anticipating how their journeys will intertwine while feeling the angst of each character as they press forward in dogged determination. The characters grow further depth, as the stage is expanded farther across Escalon from shore to shore.

I find myself eagerly awaiting the next book as Morgan simply drops the mic, leaving you excitedly frustrated mid cliffhanger like a popular soap opera of fantasy, betrayal and intrigue.

More meandering...

I should give up on this series. The promising premise of the first book has led nowhere so far. Fight scenes and faux cliffhangers. Book two ended with the main character being astonished by what she saw. Book three opens with the "astonishing" revelation that she saw a man she didn't know. The book continues with such lackluster revelations and improbable saves. The only advantage is the writer finally killed off some characters who the writer was obviously never invested in based on the absolute lack of effort spent in their development.
To be fair though, the writer takes a break from fight scenes to also include new training montages and a Yoda-type character to allow for self indulgent philosophies.
Anyway, halfway done, let me continue to throw away money in the hopes that the writer finally figures out where to take the story.

I'm sorry, but I tried for the sake of the story but I gave up about 25% of the way in, unable to continue with the 'certain death' moments, errors, repetitious dialogue and superfluous or impossible details. I found myself rolling my eyes often and downright snorted at four points (in no particular order) - alec jumped down into a secret door hidden by a canal but could still see his pursuers, Duncan manages to capture a whole city in a few hours by taking one gate and killing a seemingly endless stream of soldiers, Duncan locking the old king up instead of executing him and Kyra meeting her uncles.

I remember stumbling over this series almost 4 years ago when I was 12. Back then, I was fascinated. The worldbuilding seemed magical, and the poor editing and characters seemed alright for my 7th grade self. I still remember our assassin-cum-mercenary, Merc. And the blacksmith kid who was constantly simping on that one girl, Alec, maybe? It was a good experience overall.
So, will I recommend this series to anyone? To a 6th grader, perhaps. But to someone a year above that age?
Absolutely. Fukcing. Not.
Why, you may ask? There are plenty of other reviews. See for yourself.

Not good. Disappointed

The first two books were free so can over looked the name mistakes. This book however was 5 bucks and I wishbone had it back. I usually love stories like these, but way too much going on. Oh let's not forget the editing...the author didn't even find it necessary to proof read her own work. I have never not finished a series charging started till now. I can't tell you how disappointed I am with these.

Blasting through this series by Morgan Rice. Very entertaining book. A little bit of Tolkien and her other books. Maybe it wouldn’t be so obvious to other people, but I’ve read a lot of Morgan Rice books in the last couple months, and one thing that seemed to really annoy me was a lot of repeated phrases. I think Morgan Rice would do well to have a better editor! The series must be read in order!

This was an interesting book in the series. I think it's been too long since I read the others so I wasn't 100% sure what the character's motivations were. But the story did hold your attention. I was shocked at everybody the author was willing to sacrifice in this book. There's definitely a whole lot of death and dying. And this invading army must be a massive group of people so I'm not 100% sure why they try and fight these people
