Rate this book
It's been twelve years since the Elf king and great protector, Paron Elloy, died fighting the Mother Dragon. He was the last of the Guardians of the Balance to fall. Since then the world has been weary under the weight of the twin prophecies; one foretelling the end of the world the other foretelling a possible salvation. Fear has been building since Paron's death. However, unbeknownst to all, a thirteen year old thief holds the keys to the prophecies, the elven throne, and a new generation of Guardians.

So let me start with; I liked it. I had read a previous draft years ago and I vaguely recalled the plot, the living blades and the main cast. I liked the characters - Nightshade specifically. I always enjoy a strong female lead. By and large it flowed well. And I also liked Cera's bungling of teleportation. If you're the type who support new authors, John's attempt at fantasy is a solid tale featuring human's, elves, ogre's, dragon's, mystical blades... and a unicorn for good measure.

I am interested in reading about the rest of the world John hinted at. From cold northern mountains, to Gypsies, to other realms that he hasn't mentioned yet. All in all I think it was a good first book. Definitely 3 of 5 stars. I look forward to seeing this author continue to develop.

Disclaimer: This book was provided to me by the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is a good book in search of an editor.

The underlying magic/technology base is interesting and seem to be consistent. The plot line is interesting and the overall plot is compelling.

Unfortunately the flow of the book is rough - there were many times I thought "wait - where did that come from?" Only to have the main character suddenly infodump the how or why in an exposition a page or two later. Almost as if the author suddenly realized he hadn't explained and needed to. This combined with the number times when an issue was solved by element of the magic system that the reader has never heard of cause me to be thrown out of the book more than once.

Other transitions/events also felt rushed and changes in the relationships between the characters came suddenly. A little more foreshadowing would help the flow of the book immensely.

As the authors first self-published book this is a respectable entry. I will read the sequel and would recommend this book to anyone willing to overlook the rough flow of the book to read the gem of a story it contains.

I enjoyed portions of this book; I would enjoy it all if it had a good editor. Honestly my biggest gripe was that the author used periods for dialogue instead of commas, and used "s/he explained" as a dialogue tag way too much. It got so irritating! Again, a minor editing issue. The other thing is the story suffered greatly from an over-abundance of deus ex machina. There was a ton of action, but it nearly always resolved by something suddenly happening that wouldn't be explained until a few pages or chapters later. If the explanation had happened before the event, I wouldn't be so annoyed but it happened over and over again and I eventually I stopped being nervous at a new challenge. A new character or weapon would certainly magically appear to save the day.

I don't want to be overly critical because I had fun reading the book and I think it has a lot of potential. It's just not living up to it quite yet.
