Paul Verhagen does so many things in this book. Put shortly, he illustrates the influence of big tech, algorithms and AI on individuals, society and states. Then, he explains how especially the US and China deal with modern changes around technology and how Europe especially struggles to stand strong in this rough geopolitical landscape. Lastly, Verhagen argues that today's political institutions need serious evolutions, or perhaps even revolutions, to protect the liberty of individuals and society as well as a to develop a stronger position for the European Union and its citizens in the future.

While I would have loved for Verhagen to sketch an even more elaborate suggestion for the path forward, it is clear that the political, technological and economical challenges for Europe are immense and I can only thank him for writing this book. I would HIGHLY recommend reading it to anyone who is looking for a deeper understanding of today's changing world, as well as to anyone who is looking for a starting point for forming an opinion on how we should approach all the aforementioned challenges surrounding us.
