Angels & Whiskey starts off with a flash the past. The moment Gabe’s first love is taken from him, the moment when Autumn meets her future husband... the story that all leads to a broken man finding a way to move on and a woman who found a reason to save herself.
When Gabe moved to Vegas as a male escort he had no idea the woman he bumped into at the coffee shop was going to change his life. Unable to get her out of his head, he soon becomes entranced into her world. As Autumn realizes that her husband’s abuse isn’t going to just stop, she gets her ticket to freedom from a stranger who she can’t seem to forget.
I just couldn’t get into this particular story. The POV shifts between both characters, but there is a lot of rehashing the same scene. The story progressed rather quickly with the two characters, especially given her trust issues in men, the way her husband seemed so perfect, from the start. And for a man who had spent so many years lost in his past, he was jumping into his future with very little resistance.
The possibilities of the story was there, but it just didn’t hit the mark for me.
After being declined a NG ARC of this book, I purchased it a couple of months later for only $.99. Naturally, it ended up in my bottomless pit of "to read someday" Kindle book pile, so, of course, I completely forgot about it. When book 2 went on sale this week, I snatched it up, too, and finally decided to read book 1. Yeah, like coins collecting in couch cushions, I seem to collect Kindle books. I'm either going to consider myself literary wealthy one day with so many books stockpiled or feel extremely wasteful for buying books I never get around to reading. I know many of you know what I'm talking about.
Sorry, back to my review...Let me keep this brief..Only read this book if:
1. You don't mind a hero who is paid to be a one night date/companion by a legit service. No, he isn't required to have sex with the clients. He and his posse of ex-military co-workers throw that in for free, which apparently happens on every...single....date and keeps the ladies coming back for more. Wouldn't Uncle Sam be so proud of their new vocation? No, I honestly don't think so. These guys may have been patriotic but they have absolutely no morales.
2. The hero is still very much in love with his dead wife but thinks of the heroine while partaking of the free sex his clients always offer him. Btw, he even has dreams of threesomes involving his deceased soul mate and the heroine. Granted, they are more like nightmares, but still, I found that distasteful/repulsive.
3. The hero is first attracted to the heroine, because he thinks she smells like his lost soul mate.
4. The heroine puts up with a verbal/physically abusive husband, who is trying to get her pregnant. During those attempts of babymaking, she thinks of the hero, even after just briefing running into him at a coffee shop.
5. You don't mind crass, crude, very numerous graphic sex scenes that don't have anything to do with romance....at least as far as I read...and from my perspective. Particularly bothersome for me were the countless meaningless sexcapades with his clients.
My "romance" book-loving friends, this was just 25% into it. I surrender! In the name of romance rescue, I have to point out only read this if all you want is an erotic read and you pretty much don't care where it takes you. Not judging anyone here. But, for me, I need my romantic reads to feature the heroine and hero...only. Then there is my self-imposed rule of actually having to like the characters I'm reading about. So far I despise the hero. Though I feel sorry for the heroine, I don't particularly care for her, either.
Needless to say, Book 2 will likely never see the built in nightlight on my Kindle. It can remain as hidden as all the loose change I just referred to. I am done with this series.

Kimberly Knight did an outstanding job on this book, first of all Angels & Whiskey was not the book I thought it was going to be. It was so much more. I love the title, as you read you'll learn the significance of Angel & whiskey
We first meet Gabe, a captain in the army, & during one event in Afghanistan, his life is destroyed. He drowns himself in women & whiskey in LA where he lives with his best friend Paul. He relocated to Las Vegas with Paul for his job & he bumps into his 'Angel' & his life is not the same. Autumn or Auttie, as Paul calls her. She is married to her first love Rich, who was amazing, romantic, & super sweet to her when they were dating. But once they marry, he changes & becomes the true person he always was, manipulative, & abusive, never letting Autumn do anything w/out his permission first. On her 'approved' coffee date with her best friend, Brandi, she bumps into Gabe & can not get him off her mind. She even uses his image that night to assist her with her husband. They keep running into each other, & Autumn craves her meetings with Gabe & the connection she has with him. Once Gabe sees the proof of Rich's abuse, he offers to help Autumn & their story begins. Will Gabe be able to save his angel? Will Rich continue his abuse on Autumn? Will Autumn ever be free of Rich? Gabe was great, very alpha, but sweet, he could be tender when needed. Autumn, I loved, she went through hell with Rich, but once she met Gabe, she feels a connection & needs him in her life. You definitely see Autumn turn into a survivor & she is truly kick-ass.
I loved the best friends, Paul & Brandi, Autumn's parents. There were twists & turns in the story, a huge surprise toward the end, with some mystery. I recommend this book, do not miss!
I have been reading Kimberly Knight since she released her first book a few years ago now and I love that her books are not just fluffy romance novels.
Angels and Whiskey is no exception. Yes, it is a romance at the core, but there is so much more going on with her characters, Gabe and Autumn.
I adored Gabe right from the prologue. Yes, he is sexy alpha, but there is heart and hurt beneath all the alpha.
Autumn is so srong. What she has gone through, is going through would be too much for many a weaker woman.
The spark between our pair is instant and off the charts. I loved though that this was not an insta-love relationship. Yes, the instant attraction, but there was no bed hopping as soon as they met – even if they thought about it!!
I just wanted Gabe and Autumn to be able to overcome their past and present problems, could just feel that theirs was going to be a great romance if they could work things out.
So, do they? Can they overcome their issues and get their happy ever after?
Nope, not telling!
There are some fantastic secondary characters too – especially their best friends, Brandi and Paul/PJ/Jackson. Especially Paul.
I hope he gets his own story sometime in the future.
Ms Knight writes an intriguing story every time. I could feel imagine myself in the sands of Afghanistan or on the strip in Vegas. Her characters and their problems feel real and believable.
United States Army Captain Gabriel Hastings is living the life he always wanted to live. He's serving his country and loving every minute of it. There's nothing else he needs out of life. This is his destiny, his purpose...
Autumn Jones has the perfect life. Perfect that is, if you're looking from the outside in. She has the beautiful home and the loving husband who wants nothing more than to give her a family...
The story begins in the past, for both Autumn and Gabe. It lays out the situation that drove Gabe to throw away his career and drown himself in whiskey. I gives us a picture of Autumn's life from the inside out. They're both trapped in a very dark place and only with each other and for each other will they be able to see the light...
Kimberly Knight did an exceptional job in flowing the story from past to present. He style of writing is seamless and alluring. It captures your attention and doesn't let go. Once you read the first page, you just will not want to put this book down!
So the story goes like this ... Gabe is drowning his sorrows in whiskey because he'd loved and lost ... until he sees an angel, Autumn. Autumn is trapped in her life. She's basically a prisoner in her own home with a controlling and abusive husband. Gabe an Autumn have a pull towards each other that neither really can explain, so gradually, they form a friendship and thus begins the journey of Autumn and Gabe to HEA :)
This isn't a fluffy romance novel. There are real issues here that are not skimmed over. They're introduced and dealt with in a manner consistent with the real world. Again, excellent job Ms. Knight!
This story is laced with loss, growth, trust, friendship, love, power and will. It's an incredibly touching story of two people destined to be each other's path to light.
ARC kindly provided by The Hype PR via NetGalley for an honest review.
While Gabes journey to finding love again is about moving forward and overcoming his nightmares which is heartfelt, Autumn's journey is about facing her present living nightmare.
The characters: I was instantly pulled into Gabes story, a man in love serving In Afghanistan with only 6 months remaining of his service. In one night his reason for looking forward to his future vanished.
Autumn was married to a controlling, abusive husband and a powerful man, everyone saw what he wanted them to see while Autumn saw the real Rich.
The plot: Gabe first meets Autum in one of two places she is allowed to go, Starbucks and not only is he instantly drawn to her but he also see's her bruises and feels compelled to help her.
The day Autumn forgets to cover her bruises is the same day Gabe comes out of his Whisky haze, his coping mechanism and the same day his eyes are opened again. Fate intervened for both.
A steady paced read told in dual pov's with no heavy angst or drama, contains hot scenes and occasional humour. I loved the main characters and extended characters Brandi and Jackson.
Angels & Whisky is heartwarming story that I enjoyed.
My 4.5 star review for Angels & Whiskey by Kimberly Knight Summary: Gabriel Hastings is living his dream. Serving his country is something that he was destined to do. Following in his grandfather’s footsteps, he is a United States Army Captain and loving it. What Gabe wasn’t expecting was to fall in love and the last thing he expected was his relationship to be cut short. What’s a man to do? Well he turns to whiskey to drown out his sorrow and numb the pain making a promise to himself and his heart that he will never fall in love again. Three years later Gabe and his best friend Jackson are moving to Vegas for work. That is when Gabe runs into his angel. On the outside, Autumn Jones has it all. A beautiful house, clothes and her loving husband Richard who is desperately trying to get her pregnant and does all he can to make her become a trophy wife. Things aren’t always what they appear to be. The reality is that Richard is very controlling and knows how to cover his tracks. Richard’s pockets go deep and his reach is everywhere and that leaves Autumn trapped in a very messy marriage. There is something about Autumn that draws Gabe. He can’t get her off of his mind. Slowly they become friends and although their feelings for each other grow stronger, there is nothing she can do about it, that is until Gabe learns who Autumn’s husband really is. He vows to do everything he can to save her.
My Thoughts: The prologue sucked me in immediately and I was immediately crying. Gabe is Mr. HotMilitaryMan who is smart and witty and did I mention Hot? Dealing with heartache as well as a little PTSD, he turns to the bottle, which in turns ends his military career. He is lost and his best friend Jackson helps get him back on his feet and back to the land of the living with a job offer that Gabe just can’t refuse and ends up taking them to Vegas. Autumn is a breath of fresh air. She is beautiful and has a good head on her shoulders. Richard swept her off her feet, he became her real life knight in shining armor but soon after their wedding, the honeymoon ended immediately and her sentence began. Richard keeps Autumn on a very tight leash, treating her more like property rather than a human being. DEVINE INTERVENTION….. Autumn is able to open Gabe’s heart again and Gabe is able to give Autumn the love and strength she needs and deserves but with Autumn being married, they have to remain friends. Everyday their feelings for each other grow. Gabe does all he can to help Autumn gain her freedom, while Autumn helps Gabe move on from his past. Relationships are never easy and both Gabe and Autumn have to fight like hell for what they want. For Gabe when his past collides with the present and the truth comes out, he may lose his angel before he even had a chance with her. Kimberly Knight did a fantastic job in capturing the emotions of this story. From the beginning, Gabe won my heart. I felt the anguish, fear, heartache, excitement, the happiness. With Autumn I felt the fear, the hurt, the doubt and that want. The chemistry between those two is just EXPLOSIVE! Be prepared for an emotionally beautiful story about love, loss, betrayal and second chances.
Miracles do happen and love is a feeling that can be reborn with the right person.
Gabe and Autumn are two characters that deserved true love. Gabe is a man that lost the love of his life in the line of duty. There was not supposed to be any shooting but when they got on site it turned into chaos. Now as for Autumn she was a married and it was a happy one when they were newlyweds but then all that changed from one day to another. He was a very controlling husband that did not allow her to work and also go out. She needed to ask permission before going anywhere and that’s not a marriage. She knows that she needs to leave him but he is into some shady things and needs to plan very well where she plans to go.
Gabe saw her one day and she looked like and angel. The moment that they ran into each other I knew that was all it was going to take for them to fall in love with each other. But Autumn was afraid because she knew that her husband was watching her. Now as for Gabe he knew that if he wanted something serious with Autumn he had to quit his job. Autumn and Gabe end up talking and they come up with a plan and it comes into play sooner than what she thought. The perfect opportunity arises when Autumn and her husband through a party because he is running for mayor. There is a distraction and that is the perfect opportunity for her to leave her husband. Now it was only a matter of time for Autumn to get the divorce from her husband and for Gabe to quit his job. But things don’t always go the way it was planned and especially for these two. Detectives come into play along with dead bodies but in the end things finally go right for them in the end where even a ring is designed.
Angels & Whiskey was a good read! I truly enjoyed it. There were a couple of twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. There was one thing that I would have loved even more which was more action between Gabe and Major Dick. The chemistry between these two characters was sensual and passionate. I can’t wait to read more for this author’s books.
Received ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an Honest Review
Autumn Jones is stuck in an abusive marriage. She thought she found her happily ever after but she was very wrong. After she married Rich he suddenly became controlling and abusive. He was also a shady businessman.
Out for coffee with her friend on afternoon, she runs into a gorgeous stranger named Gabe. They have an immediate connection to each other.
Gabe is an ex Army Captain who has survived on whiskey and women for the past 5 years. He is haunted by the death of his first love.
When he meets Autumn, he suddenly feels his life taking a turn for the better. Unfortunately she is married; so he can’t act on his feelings.
However, when Gabe finds out who her husband is and what he has been doing to her, all bets are off and he is going to save Autumn from her husband.
I really enjoyed this book. I was a little disappointed that Autumn jumped into Gabe’s arms so fast; she was still married at the time and two wrongs don’t make a right.
I also wish the author would have played up the events around Autumn leaving her husband more. I think the plot could have been more intense at this point.
Overall, a great book, and I would recommend it to read. The characters were great.
That blurb grabbed my attention immediately and thanks to Netgalley for the advanced copy. I sat myself down on a snow day and read this whole book in one sitting. Everything about Angels & Whiskey just "works", from the plot to these character's I was sucked into an all day read-athon.
Gabe, oh you sweet Alpha-male of goodness, was the perfect knight and shining armor that Autumn needed. After being married for three years into an abusive marriage she was plotting her escape route when a handsome "green-eyed" man is determined to become her savior, even when he is living with his own personal nightmares.
From the very first chapter I was intrigued and I loved how Ms. Knight gave us an unpredictable plot, especially when I thought I knew how this one would play out. Well, I was way of the grid! I connected to Autumn, her courage was empowering and as for Gabe, he's the perfect blend of a gentleman and a Alpha hottie.
Finished this a couple of days ago and really enjoyed it. I have to say I went in without reading reviews so I was shocked to say the least when I read what he did as a job, lol.....wow didn't see that coming, lol. I think THAT distracted me from their actual storyline just a bit. The storyline/timeline namely, itself, progressed pretty quickly and I wasn't complaining, sometimes I need a nice fast paced read instead of a slow burn.
The twist was very interesting and once that came out the story picked up quickly! I will definitely continue this series to see where the secondary characters go in the future, wink, wink!
Kimberly Knight has done it one again, Angles & Whisky is definitely a must read! I was lucky enough to receive this book as an ARC and couldn't put it down. You can feel the attraction between Gabe and Autumn radiate as you turn the pages, I totally recommend this book!!! My only complaint is that it is going to be a stand alone.
I loved gabe and Autum so much. this book really pulled me in from the start, I had a few different emotions while reading it. Kimberly knight has done a great job. I volunteered to read a copy of this book
It's been too long since Ive read a Kimberly Knight book. I thought Tattoo Dots was my favorite, I was so wrong. Angels & Whiskey is my fave, that is for now as Im starting book two, Lace & Tequilla. I really loved reading this story, Im a sucker for Military Romance. I love that Kimberly Knight brought a cause to her story that hits home for so many women, maybe that's why I loved Tattoo Dots because I felt the connection there as well. In this story we see a woman fighting to put on the perfect ficade of her home life when in reality it was nothing close to perfect. Seeing Autumn grow as a woman in this story was encouraging and inspiring. Then there was Gabe and you can't help but fall in love with him right from the start. He really pulls on your heart and makes you feel ALL THE FEELS! I loved the ending, I couldn't imagine there being a better ending to this story. Angels & Whiskey is one story you wont be able to put down. It has it all; drama, feels, hot guys, and so much more. Definitely a must read.
It has EVERYTHING!!! Love, loss, lust, hate, anger, compassion, tears, laughs, and the hottest sex I have read. I'm sorry but when you read...
"How do you want it?" I asked. She pulled her head back. "What?" She blushed. "Aw, it's no time to get bashful. We're gonna fuck now. How do you want it? Hard or slow?"
Lines like that get your attention. You know the man is good and will please you and you have to know what else he does. I will say, he does some spectacular things to a woman's body and to read it was interesting. We don't normally see things like "squirting" in a book.
Kimberly Knight kept me in the book. Not once did I want to walk away from the story. She has delivered a HOT, classy, beautiful and strong love story. Autumn is a very strong heroine and it hurt to read her at times but to see her gain strength and overcome her situation was amazing. We all need women who inspire us and she did just that. She suffered and won at the end. Seeing her grow and accomplish her goal was one of the reasons I loved the story. So many Autumns in this world. May they all find their Gabe.
Gabe, oh my GAWD!!! What can I say about this delicious man that will not sound bad and vulgar.... he hurt, you fall in love with him from page one. He loved and lost and now he is on a path of just living, surviving and existing. Then one day, bam, he literally walks into the one that will forever change him. He will never escape the eyes, the curves, the aura of his angel. He is a man on a mission of salvation. Will he save the angel that saved him? Will his angel want to be saved?
This book is one that must be read, shared and re-read. I can't wait to hold a paperback of this book. I must own it. It captured me and I can't wait to finish my other Kimberly Knight book.
I loved that this story was about two people finding each other, helping each other and removing each other's past demons. All too often authors only write about one main characters having a troubled past when in reality two people are often drawn to each other because they are so similar which often means the other person will likely also have a back story and baggage that they bring to a relationship.
Immediately the author drew me in, the prologue was absolutely heart breaking in describing what Gabe went through with his first love. I cannot imagine how deep he must have sunk following that incident. My only critique is I would have like the author to spend a little more time focusing on what Gabe went through to get to where he is now. There was discussion of his alcohol use and nightmares, but I would have liked a flashback or two of how we was in the days following his discharge from the military.
Autumn appears to have the perfect marriage, but we all know looks can be deceiving which is exactly the situation with Autumn's marriage. Too worried about disappointing everyone else, Autumn put up with her husband's controlling and abusive behavior until one day she decides she has had enough. She confides in her best friend at a coffee shop where Gabe and Paul just happen to be. Gabe overhears some of what Autumn relays to her friend and immediately wants to help her find a way out of her marriage.
The story is very believable, unfortunately this type of abuse and control happens in many relationships/marriages today. I love that Gabe immediately wanted to protect Autumn and that his friend Paul was willing to do whatever Gabe felt was needed. Both of these strong men want nothing more than to pull Autumn from her marriage and keep her safe.
** ARC received from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review **
I was very very pleasantly surprised at this book. I'm not really sure what i expected, but what i got, was a story that blew me away. This was not the same old story line. Gabe broke my heart. his story blew me away and i never expected what happened to him, to happen and it ripped my heart out. (i dont want to give too much away, you really need to read this book to find out) Autumn also broke my heart. what happens to her... OMG its not expected and its heartbreaking....but what happens when they find each other. Amazing !! I fell completely in love with them as a couple. I love how the author went off the path of broken ex military guy meets broken needy girl and they eventually hook up. The way these characters actually do come together is suspenseful and exciting and i couldnt put the book down. Both characters are very well written and have amazing chemistry. Gabe is ex-marine, alpha, sexy, hot and so broken. Autumn is soooo NOT a pain in the butt female. She's strong, not at all whiny, beautiful and intelligent and wants back her independence. She is also written so well. The side characters blend well with the main characters and help the story flow well. Richard, its a please to hate that jerk. I want to punch him in his boys repeatedly. The spelling and grammar are spot on and the ending is absolutely beautiful. I love how the author wrapped up the story. I would definitely read more by this author and I highly recommend her.
Well what can I say....Kimberly Knight has done it again!
I loved this story! It gave me everything I could want in a story...sexiness, drama, angst, hotness, mystery, tears.....and some heart breaking events that made me want to hold a certain character! The story is based around a chance encounter, a fateful meeting that changed the life of two people showing that no matter how bad life is, no matter how much you think your future is mapped out, that things can change for the better. What followed was a sweet story of finding love agains the odds. I wish I could tell you everything that happened in this story but you need to read it to appreciate it and I don't want to give too much away! I loved the power that Gabe had, letting him overcome the tragedy that he has suffered. To see him finally want more from life made my heart happy! And Autumn, well she is stronger than anyone realised! To go through what she did and still have the strength to run...well damn woman...you rock! the story was great as I said, I couldn't put it down! It was well written and kept me hooked! If you want a love story about survival, about overcoming everything to find your soul mate then this is the book for you!
I will be honest, when I requested the book from Netgalley, I did not even read the blurb.....reason being I love this author, therefore I knew I would love this book....
Upon starting it I began to get a little nervous as certain red flags started going up of things I usually avoid when reading a book. However the author did such a great job with writing this, that those certain things did not even matter in the end.
We first met Gabe when he is a solider in Afghanistan. He experiences a terrible tragedy which ultimately leads to him leaving and turning to drowning his sorrows in whiskey and women....who come to him in the form of his new job as a escort.....
Autumn is in a bad marriage to a absolute douchebag who likes to "abuse her". She wants desperately to get out of the marriage, but is afraid of he husband. A chance encounter at a coffee shop allows these 2 to meet, which ultimately leads to Gabe wanting to rescue Autumn.
This is a great story about second chances, as both these characters desperately need them.....not to mention some pretty hot and sexy scenes.....
I really enjoyed this book. The attraction between Gabe and Autumn is amazing. At times I didn’t know how things would turn out and I was literally on the edge of my seat waiting to find out.
The book is told through both Gabe and Autumn’s POVs. When the book starts I literally had tears in my eyes. It broke my heart and I wanted to hug Gabe so hard. But then it goes to several years later and Gabe has found a different way to forget his past. I don’t do spoilers so you will have to read to see what his choices are. Then he sees his angel.
Autumn met her husband Richard while working on day. Richard was also in the Army and she thought he was the greatest man ever… until he wasn’t. I could not stand Richard and how he treated Autumn. I seriously was praying for him to get his. When Autumn meets Gabe her world is turned upside down.
I really enjoyed the journey of Gabe and Autumn. They both had to make it through the bad times to get to the good. There were times I wish Gabe would have opened up more but I understand why he didn’t. Make sure you one click this you won’t regret it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through Crazy Cajun Book Addicts for an honest review. I have been a fan of Kimberly's writing for a couple of years now and this book was no different I fell for Gabe from the first page. He's a Captain in the Army and whilst serving in Afghanistan he suffers a personal tragedy the only way he knows how to cope is through a bottle of Whiskey. That is until he literally bumps into Autumn a couple of years later after leaving the Army and moving to Vegas with his bestfriend Jackson. Autumn has personal problems of her own but is Gabe the one to save her and were they always destined to meet? Another fabulous read from Kimberly and definitely worthy of 5 Stars.
This story is very emotional. First thing I loved about it is that there is no billionaire. Gabe is in the army and finds his first love but it doesn't last long. He leaves the army and struggles with his feelings and drinks a little to much. He is just an everyday guy who is just living one day at a time with some help from his army buddy and best friend. Then Autumn comes into the story and just makes the story. I loved her character. She is a fighter and is ready to take her life back. Gabe saves her but she saves him too. Once again Kimberly has given us characters we can relate to and love and a story that is great to read.
This is my introduction to Kimberly Knight's writing and it's been great!!! This book looks at the lives of Gabe and Autumn, how they get to be where they are in this moment, how they find each other and how they build from there. Both characters have endured a great deal and are struggling to find their way again, to find themselves again and maybe in the end to find love and happiness. Excellent character development and a story that progresses naturally. It's filled with emotions and written in a way that allows the reader to experience those emotions first hand. Wonderfully written, an excellent story. I look forward to reading more of her work.
This was a really good book. I enjoyed all the characters.
The story was like one you hear everyday. Rich was one character that I did not care for, actually hated him, lol
I just loved Autumn, she was so sweet, sincere, honest, loving, and innocent until she didn't have to be. Of course Gabe and Paul were awesome. I just fell in love with Gabe. I adore him.
Gabe was a life saving, love making, heart swelling, kind of guy. He is another favorite of mine.
Everything always happens for a reason, and it all worked out great in this book. Loved it.
