Halfway Dead

Carlie McEwan loves many things.
She loves being a witch. She loves her town of Halfway, NY—a tourist destination nestled on the shores of an Adirondack lake. Carlie loves her enormous familiar, Gus, who is twenty-five pounds of judgmental Maine Coon cat, and she positively worships her Grandmother, a witch of incredible power and wisdom. Carlie spends her days cooking at the finest—and only—real diner in town, and her life is a balance between magic and the mundane, just as she likes it.
When a blonde stranger sits at the diner counter and calls her by name, that balance is gone. Major Pickford asks Carlie to lead him into the deepest shadows of the forest to find a mythical circle of chestnut trees, thought lost to forever to mankind. There are ghosts in the forest, and one of them cries out to Carlie across the years. Come find me.
Danger, like the shadowed pools of the forest, can run deep. The danger is real, but Carlie’s magic is born of a pure spirit. With the help of Gus, and Gran, and a rugged cop who really does want to save the world, she’ll fight to bring a ghost home, and deliver justice to a murderer who hides in the cool, mysterious green of a forest gone mad with magic.

I really liked Halfway Dead. It definitely ended up being something right up my alley with the way this story involved witches, witchcraft and diverse magical creatures.

I have to admit that this book didn't hook me right from the start. I actually had a bit of a tough time getting into it. It took me a little over the first half of the book for really starting to like it. Some things confused me a bit but I hope this doesn't scare people away because it really is a great story.

As much as I wasn't sure about the main character, Carlie McEwan, at first, I ended up loving her. She's a witch so that makes her awesome already but she's also very snarky and very good at her witchcraft.

The story really started picking up once she, together with Jim, went into the forest to find these special trees. Not long after that they meet Wulfric, an ancient vampire. These three made quite the pair and I loved their dynamic.

Overall, Halfway Dead by Terry Maggert had a bunch of great characters, magic galore and good writing. It was pretty great even though it took me a while to get into it. The second half and the ending certainly saved it all for me. Gotta love that!

Get ready for Carlie, the witch who loves her gifts, her hometown and her job. Actually, she is happy about most everything, except when her life is not balanced. Meet her familiar, Gus and her Grandmother, a wise witch with a font of information to share.

Then the day came when her “balanced” world took a nosedive into the dark and dangerous. A ghost is calling to her from the woods in a dark plea to find them and bring them home to safety. Has the forest gone mad? Who else is hidden in the woods? Why does everyone want the rare trees that grow in those woods? Is there more to this than meets the eye? Does it involve magic?
Fear not, Carlie is a pure witch, no angst, no fear and witty as heck with a constitution like steel.

Halfway Dead by Terry Maggert is a light-hearted read filled with sometimes quirky characters, a cozy small town feel and one witch who believes in herself and the power of good! Grab chair, settle in and discover the magic of a mystery with a heroine you can’t help but adore! Join in and follow along on Terry Maggert’s magical mystery tale. Who knows, you may meet more creatures that will dispel the stories of their darkness!

Not too bad. The author was forcibly holding me at gun point to read this... Of course, by that I mean he introduced himself on social media to a bunch of people and I made him talk to me.

It totally worked out. Halfway Dead is about Carlie, a white witch who gets sucked into the search for a rare tree and a mythical fountain. More importantly, there's a hot half- vampire and a horrible rotting wyrm. This would be urban fiction if it wasn't in the mountains. Am I understanding that right? Speculative fiction, then? I don't know. Worth the quick read. I'll definitely be reading part 2.

A little smut might've earned it that last star. But you can't have everything, I guess.

Edit: Hmmm... You guys know I mean white witch as in practicing white magic, not as in a witch who is white, right?... Though, I guess both are true. Carry on.

4 ★ Audiobook⎮ I've been wanting to get into more paranormal/"witchy" books for a while now. The last couple have disappointed slightly, but this one was definitely closer to the mark. It was light, fun, and extremely easy to get through. The Adirondack setting was new to me and I enjoyed its uniqueness, as well as the way it was incorporated into the plot. Halfway Dead was definitely more on the all-inclusive side of things, with vampires, ghosts, and various sorts of undead creatures thrown in. In that respect, it reminded me of Ilona Andrew's Innkeeper Chronicles series, without being nearly as graphic (and without aliens, thankfully). I'll admit to cringing a bit when the vampire character was introduced, just because vampires are so overdone these days, but the romance was very minimal (even if a bit sudden). It may take a larger spotlight in the following installments, but given the way it was approached in Halfway Dead, I'm not too worried about it.

For a first installment, I think Mr. Maggert is off to a promising start. I like the way he is pacing the series. I never felt overwhelmed with information during this installment, which was a primary complaint I voiced when reviewing the first installment of the Innkeeper Chronicles. If developed properly in the next installments, I think this series could become even more delightful. I'm especially hoping to see much more character and world development, since both of those things seemed just a teensy bit shallow to me in this installment. I get the feeling that there could be much more lurking beneath the surface and Maggert may simply be biding his time. In the past, I have a preferred my "witchy-woo" to be a little deeper and darker, which is probably why I was so drawn to the Hoodoo mysticism of J.D. Horn's Jilo. However, I can understand that some readers may like their coffee with cream and sugar and may like their paranormal fictions a little sweeter too. Call me crazy, but I think Halfway Dead would make an excellent "beach read" (or listen) for paranormal lovers. It is lighter and funnier than some other paranormal stuff out there and Terry Maggert's writing style is sure to put a smile on your face!

Narration review: I loved the narrator, Erin Spencer, instantly! Her voice sold me on this series almost as much as the writing. There is no doubt in my mind that a less enjoyable narrator would have significantly decreased my overall enjoyment of this listening experience. Naturally, I did my homework on her and discovered that she has narrated over 60 audiobooks on Audible.com, several of which I am itching to get my hands on now. ♣︎

I went into this without reading the blurb or any reviews, and I have to say that it was amazing!! The blurb sums up the story so I won't add anything else in case I spoil something. So let's get straight to my thoughts.

The last book I read by this author captured my attention, but not as much as this!! Right from the start I became invested with Carlie and wanted to know her story. So many times the witchy books I read have the MC either suddenly coming into powers or not liking the fact that she is a witch and wanting to be normal. Not so here!! Carlie loves being a witch and embraces it every day. She uses her magic all the time and I loved that about her! She knew who she was and stuck by it.

I loved Carlie anyway. She was witty, strong, capable and a no nonsense type of girl. She helps people with her magic and loves it. Not officially of course, because no one believes in magic, but if a person leaves a note with what is needed, Carlie will help as best she can. I also loved her spirit, she is spunky and brave. So many times I was laughing out loud at what she was thinking or saying!!

I also loved Carlies relationship with her Gran. She shows such respect and love to her! Carlies Gran is quite the woman, powerful, and like Carlie herself, a no nonsense type.

The plot was fast paced and entertaining. I loved the whole saving the old trees thing, the vampire in the woods, the lake and I pretty much loved everything about it!!! It was well written and developed and held my attention till the end. It's full of magic, fantastical creatures, mystery, secrets, legends and plenty of action! I flew through the book and didn't want to take out my earbuds.

So ya, I loved this!! From it's engaging characters to it's engrossing plot, Half Dead is a must read!! I do so hope we see more from this world because I would love to dive in again.

This is the first book I've listened to by Erin Spencer, and it won't be my last. She captured Carlie perfectly and brought across her fiery spirit. She was easy to listen to and really made the story come alive.

I knew the moment I saw the cover to this book that it would be different. It has all the qualities of a good PNR or UF, but it stands out by the calmness that the story gives off. Don’t get me wrong, there’s definitely some tension when the dead bodies start showing up, and the sexy vampire comes into town. I just never thought that it would be so easy to fall into this story. I liked the flow, and before you know it, it’s over. I’m excited to read the next book, to see how our heroine grows and adjusts to her new beau. However, the beginning wasn’t exactly slow, but there’s a lot of character development, magic defining, and world building. That’s not exactly a bad thing, considering the genre. It was, however, a little long winded. I felt that there was too much narration and not enough dialogue.

Halfway Dead is set in a tourist town called Halfway; in the state of New York. Carlie loves her town and the people in it. She’s selfless and is a very one-with-nature kind of girl. She is also a witch. I love the relationship that she has with her Gran, who is teaching her the ways of their long line of witchery. Carlie works at the local diner (gotta love those diners where everyone knows you and you them), but she also has a job to do. That job includes keeping the town of Halfway free of creatures that go bump in the night and helping the locals get over grief or shine some light in their direction. As long as it’s nothing harmful, Carlie does it all. At the start, we get to see a little of what Carlie can do, when she kills two Wendigos in the woods, while they are making camp and cooking up some unsuspecting victim to eat. That excitement lasted only moments, but then we get to meet Gran and her awesome Maine Coon – Gus. As the story ventures on, the real mystery solving begins. And it all started with trees.

I liked the fresh feel to the different types of magic used in this story. The details are really well fleshed out, and I liked that Carlie is still oblivious to some of it’s usage. I want to see her grow as a character, so I like where the author is taking this story. The family history that is explored is also great, but there are many secrets still yet to be revealed. There are many creatures to meet, and while some are interesting, others are dangerous. Enter the sexy Viking vampire Wulfric. He has come to help save the day! Of course, there’s instant attraction, so I hope to get more of the romance aspect in the next book. I would like to know more about Major Pickford, since he seems important to the story. He was there one moment, and gone the next. If he’s not going to be a key player in this world, I think he should not have been mentioned at all. I’m sure Carlie could have found some other way to find those supposedly lost trees.

Overall, this was a good read for me. Despite the little problems I had with this, I can’t deny that it’s a refreshing read since I’ve been reading lots of the genre lately. If you mix Sabrina the Teenage Witch & Buffy, you’d get Carlie the White Witch of Halfway. Recommended!

Different

What I liked about this book, it was unlike any witch story I've read so far. I liked Carlie, she is down to earth and a good witch. It has a good story which keeps your interest and Wulfric is a great character as well. Future books looks promising.

Book Title: Halfway Dead
Book Author: Terry Maggert

Introduction: Terry Maggert asked me to review his book, so I was more than happy to give an honest review!! It's always a pleasure when authors actually ask me to read their books. It makes me feel all kinds of special, like they think I'm a good enough reviewer or reader to read it. Maybe that's just me though!

All of my thoughts/opinions are my own. I am under no obligation to write a nice or good review.

Review:
Paranormal.
Witches.
Magic.
Monsters.
So many incredible topics and themes thrown into an incredible book.

At first glance, I wasn't sure if I'd be interested in this novel. I had been slowly moving away from YA/Fantasy fictional realms slowly and the plot synopsis seemed like my old interests. But when I actually got into reading the book, I realized it wasn't just some typical, super common fantasy novel. Was there fantasy and witches? Yes. But, was it the same old plot, the same old setting that you find in every witch novel? Nope. That was the great initial aspect of this novel. It started off in a different manner, and I loved that.

The magic in this novel is definitely interesting, and readers need to pay attention to understand what's happening. It's not some ooey gooey romance novel that requires no thought. I enjoyed this aspect of the novel, seeing as many magical novels these days require no thought or mental effort.

The book is original, and as I continue to type about how different this novel is, I want to make sure readers understand that. I love an original novel that isn't by the book. It's neat, interesting, and really cool! In my opinion, I wish more books were outside of the box like this one!

Our main character is hilarious and reading from her point of view is excellent. I rarely like reading First Person POV but when your main character is funny and intelligent, my opinion instantly changes on this form of writing. Carlie is also a very happy person, and not depressing like some characters who have narrated other books I have read. This makes the book more interesting, to hear from a nicer, happier point of view. The background and side characters are also equally as amazing (and sassy in some situations!).

This book features a strong, independent female lead, a witty sense of humour, an intelligent choice of wording and an engaging plot. What more can a reader ask for? Reading Terry Maggert's writing was a nice change from all the cookie cutter authors out there. I really appreciate his style and how he words his thoughts and splashes them onto the page. I will definitely be continuing on with this series.

The cover (which I know we aren't supposed to judge a book by it's cover), is beautiful. I find books that are well written that also have an incredible cover always seem to spike my interest more than well written books with boring covers. Superficial? Probably. But sometimes the little extra beauty makes the book one step higher than all the others!

Now for the negatives. There are always negatives in every book, but the positives outweigh these negatives. There was a slow pace, which is one of my biggest pet peeves. But, this slow pace was not constant. It happened only a few times and for short periods of time, which made this book bearable.

Overall, this was an incredible introduction to a new series for me to sink my fangs into (haha...fangs...get it? Monsters? Vampires...ah, nevermind). This breathtaking series is a must read for fantasy readers who want an out of the box, original title!

Four out of five stars!

I. LOVE. THIS. BOOK.
I am having the hardest time describing how this book made me feel. First, witches. Enough said, right? But no, there is more. So much more. This is a fantastical paranormal world that is carefully constructed, very well hidden and could be sooooo true! The best part is that the characters that come to life in this story are from all different eras. It brings the witty, modern day sarcasm with some archaic beings and witchery. What could be better than that? You’ll have to read Halfway Dead to find the answer to that question (inserts evil laugh). Carlie is the main character and she is a white witch who is taught by her Gran. Carlie is more than content with her life but she is approached by two different people trying to find a certain area, but they both have different agendas. It seems that now Fate has set her on a new path to seek this area out. Now Carlie is set to find this magical place to uncover secrets but many more questions get raised in the process. You never know who you can trust when intentions get skewered by revenge, power, and sometimes love. The way this tale unfolds is incredibly calming but also intense. There is no shortage of crazy things going on and the plot moves pretty fast. I didn’t even realize I reached the end...well, until the end. I don’t even know if that makes sense, haha! The story kept me on my toes until the very end. It constantly had me wondering what direction they were going to go next. I needed to find out who all the players were and was continuosly trying to figure out their motive. A series of puzzles that need to be figured out. And in true style for any great author, they suck you in and then BAM! Kill someone! AHHHHHHHH!!!!!! It makes me want to cut the author off from any contact but I can’t stop and I need to know what happens next! So, on we go to Halfway Bitten (Halfway Witchey #2) to see what other heart wrenching evilness awaits me. Thank you Terry Maggert....you have a new fan!

“I treat my magic like a new pair of shoes. Someday, we’re going to love each other, but for now we’re just trying to fit together comfortably.”

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m naturally optimistic, but a practitioner of witchcraft knows that there is no such thing as an accident. Not around a witch.”

“I really do love a man who speaks in archaic dialect. It’s just so chivalrous, despite the fact that I could use a nice, deep lungful of air more than the declarative of a would-be knight. Wulfric backed up his sentiment with the kind of punch that spawns legends...”

A MUST READ!

Magic runs in Carlie McEwan's blood, literally. In the tiny town of Halfway, deep in the Adirondack mountains, Carlie carries on the family tradition, never coming right out and saying she's a witch, but accepting the letters asking for help from the townfolk - as long as her conditions are met. The envelope and paper must be handmade and plain, the ink from the forest or natural world, and the person asking must mean no harm.

When she's not helping people with beneficial spells, Carlie makes the worlds best waffles and kills things that go bump in the night, like Wendigo's.

When Carlie is approached by a stranger looking for a guide into the woods, her first instinct is to say no. Until she's shown the picture of a half circle of American chestnut trees, a variety thought to be extinct. That's not what holds Carlie's interest. There's something about that half circle. Something familiar about the tumble of stones behind it.

And it's Carlie's gran who knows why. It's an old family story, one past due to be wrapped up.

The magic in Halfway Dead is more in line with the natural world. Enough so that I was surprised when a vampire turned up with talk of werewolves and shifters. The forest teems with a full compliment of fae and that forest is every bit as much a character as the people in the story.

There was a potential bad guy and a string of murders that are mentioned, but never develop into anything Carlie has to worry about. The end of the story comes quickly and gives us a peek at what the direction the next book might take. Shifters, a missing girl, and an amorous vampire - oh my! I look forward to the next Halfway book.

Monsters, witches, magic, a super cool heroine, a witty grandmother and food references…what’s not to love about Halfway Dead?! This is the first book I’ve read by Terry Maggert and definitely, DEFINITELY, won’t be my last. I found Terry’s characters to be original, well fleshed out and relatable, and his story to be both charming and unique. I think the one thing I’d like to point out is that his writing is what I consider “smart” writing, my favorite kind. There are brow-raising references, eloquently-written paragraphs and laugh out loud lines that make this book a page-turner. Please do yourself a favor and check this one out. It’s an engaging story that has me waiting impatiently for book 2! Bravo, Mr. Maggert!

I fell in love with Mr Maggert's breathtakingly descriptive style in his Fearless series, so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from this series. A witch who moonlighted as a cook seemed so tame by comparison...

A witch who single-handedly took out two wendigoes in the opening scene. So much for tame.

Ghosts and shapeshifters and half-vampires and sylphs and ancient secrets dating back to the Vikings...it's hard to review this book without giving too many spoilers. Nevertheless, in her quest to right a centuries-old wrong, Carlie takes the reader on an awesome ride. Five stars.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, particularly the writing style. Everything was described so beautifully I actually found myself liking the description more than the dialogue, which doesn't happen for me often. The writing of her magic seemed so effortless I just believed it as truth. I liked the main character, Carlie, but I didn't love her, hence the four stars. It's possible she could grow on me some more though; I will definitely be continuing on in this series.

Oh so much wants to be said but I don't want to ruin it for the next reader! The ending was slightly anticlimactic, but in an art imitating life sort of way. Very good for an introduction to the series, and so much history for Carlie, Maggert could write sequels and prequels forever. recommend.

I got this book from the author. He requested me to review all the four books in this series. This is the first book. This is also my first to read a book by the author. This is a story about Carlie. She's a cook at the town diner and is also a witch who people depend on to solve some problems and illnesses. One day, a handsome stranger came into town and Carlie had no choice but to follow him into the depths of the forest. There she encountered a thousand-year old vampire that had been trapped in the forest. Carlie had to attempt a few things she had never done before and to fight a very evil being.

Halfway is a name of the town where Carlie lives and where the story is set. It's called halfway because of it's location which is exactly halfway in the middle of Utica, New York and the Canadian border. It's a tourist destination town and a repository for magical things which is I think is both an advantage and disadvantage for Carlie being a witch. Just like her being a witch, it's both a gift and a curse and that's what's we're going to find out in this story.

Like all fantasy and paranormal stories, you'll meet here different magical creatures, including those evil ones. Carlie, being a new witch, has to navigate through this magical side of her life with the guidance of her grandmother and learn more about her abilities. Then, Jim Dietrich came to town to ask for Carlie's help. She didn't know that the help he requires may actually get her to use her gifts and go into the forest where something bad happened and Carlie may need her magic to put things to right.

I did enjoy this story. What I really like was what started out as just a routine investigation to prevent corporate espionage has turned into a battle to get rid of evil spirits. It's a turn of events that you will not normally expect but it was done very well in this story. I was actually hanging on to every chapter because I was so curious. Then, it gets curiouser when other magical beings appeared and their origin is even more interesting. I'm glad that Carlie succeeded in this first mission of sorts with her using her abilities. I'm dying to know what adventures and creatures she had to exorcise in order to protect Halfway and it's people.

I give the book 4/5 delicious waffles. This is a really good start to a new series. It's very suspenseful and you won't really know what's going to happen next in the succeeding chapters. I basically had no idea. I had no way of knowing. I did not formulate any theories as to what Carlie will do or what's going to transpire. I just enjoyed the story as it took me to where it went next and it was fun and a relief that Carlie succeeded. It was scary and nerve-racking having to watch Carlie face an enemy she had never seen before, except in books or heard from stories of her grandma. Having all these other mix of characters, both immortal and ordinary humans also add up to the whole dynamics of the story. I like the fact that in the first few chapters, the author has laid it out that Halfway is a magical place. It's like a disclaimer or a warning. So definitely, you would expect supernatural and paranormal things to happen. I like that it somehow prepares the reader but not really that prepared because you'll never know what creatures are going to make an appearance. I'm looking forward to reading the next books in the series and how the rest of the book will unfold and as to what direction the story will take. This is a book that falls halfway between an easy and a not so easy read. Easy on the beginning but you will have to brace yourself in the later part because that's where the real fight begins. And then, you can take a deep breath of relief because Carlie was able to get out of that forest unscathed and probably just advanced into the next level, if there are levels in being a witch. After this assignment, she may have just become a newly-improved witch from being just a newbie.

But for now, I treat my magic like a new pair of shoes. Someday, we're going to love each other, but for now we're just trying to fit together comfortably.

You insult my waffles, and you've just launched the first salvo in a war.

Tea first, troubles second.

I read the first book of the Fearless series, The Forest Bull, by Terry Maggert (and gave it 4 Stars), so when I saw this book and its interesting cover, I knew I would be in for a treat. I was correct!

Synopsis (from the author): Carlie McEwan loves many things.

What I liked: I have to say that I liked this story! Carlie was a good witch and her regular job as a cook in the local diner made her believable. Her cat acted like a typical cat with all the quirks associated with the animal - despite being her familiar. I liked the occasional interaction with her grandmother and her amazing magic. The addition of the cop as part of the trek into the forest to save the ghost made a nice addition, as did the potential love interest (in the form of a half-Viking half-vampire who lives in the forest). Add to that the excellent writing style and you have an entertaining read!

What I didn’t like: One of the characters referenced in the synopsis was Major Pickford, who appeared to have potential as a antagonist. Other than the brief appearance, the character disappeared, and since he had asked Carlie to accompany him to the chestnut trees, I thought he would play a significant role. I was left wondering why he was included. I also would have liked more about Carlie’s grandmother.

Overall impression: Halfway Dead is a well-written, entertaining book. With a nice plot, memorable characters, and enough action to keep my interest, this is an excellent read. Give this one a try!

Did not finish. Got to 36%.

So here's the thing, you can't tell your readers that the main gal is a 'white witch' who knows almost no evil or conflict spells; and then put her up against an evil being and suddenly she has all sorts of combative magic. But don't worry, immediately after said fight the main gal reminds us she is a 'white witch' and therefore she doesn't kill and everything she just did is okay. And that's just the last so many flaws in this book before I gave up.

For a witch this girl is the worst judge of character ever. She's convinced everyone is good and, even while she is thinking she shouldn't trust someone, she walks up to them and agrees to go into the forest with them. Not only does she do this once but TWICE! Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice you're just an idiot!

And it just keeps going... there's too much telling and very little showing. The writing is a bit stilted and characters say or think things that are too formal all the time. Thereby giving no personality to anyone.
My biggest of all pet peeves is the use of magic and the word witch in this book. I think within about the first ten pages Terry Margert manages to subtly insult every single practicing Pagan in the world and maybe some atheists and other religions as well. Oh it's veiled, but the whole comparison of 'real' witches who must inherit their magic versus others who 'dress-up' the part is a bit too harsh. It's like saying I'm better than you because I was born into the royal family. Never mind the fact that the use of magic in this book is poorly written. We are given no rules, or understandings about how magic works except for some vague and stereotypical 'witchy' comments that are (ironically) poor renditions of Wiccan spells.

I have zero desire to read about a selfish, arrogant, magical main girl and her little town of perfectness. It's just not interesting and for me is off putting. I like my characters with flaws and challenges. Being bad at baking is not a character flaw!

All in all I recommend just passing and moving on. You might get through this book but I doubt it will be life changing, entertaining or even remotely interesting by the end.

Please note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is an honest and unbiased review. Don't believe me? Check out the other books I've had eARCs for that I gave great reviews to. I always give my opinion whether good or bad.

CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS

Wow. If you love witches and paranormal how can you not love this book. I am a fan of witches and magic. I have always been interested in them. I loved this story! It is a different approach and will engage your interests right from the beginning. I loved how in depth the writing was. This story will pull you in and not let go even after the last page! I loved Terry Maggert's descriptions of all things paranormal. The battles were so descriptive you actually could see it playing out in your head. The way the whole book was written was wonderful.

Carlie is a young white witch. She has learned the craft from her grandmother who has been a practicing witch for many years. As a white witch, Carlie draws her powers from nature and protects all things good. When she is not practicing witchcraft, she is cooking in a local diner. Carlie is highly thought of in her town.

When a company representative comes to town looking for specific trees, Carlie is approached for assistance. Doing research for the trip in the woods, Carlie learns more about her family's past. What does Carlie learn? Is the trip successful? Who does Carlie meet along the way?

I highly recommend this book to others. I am off to read the next book in this series and cant wait to see what happens next!

Halfway Dead is an awesome start to what is looking to be a promising series. Our main character Carlie is a witch, a tiny but very powerful girl. She has a huge cat, which makes her awesome in my book (my parents have a huge Maine Coon too, hmm). She is loyal and supportive to those who need her, and those who care for her. I love her relationship with her Grandma and her independence as well.

I also liked how this plot was complicated and twisty. Nothing was as it seemed, and things kept getting more and more bizarre as Carlie got involved and started unraveling threads. Of course, when long-term family history secrets start getting involved and things becomes personal, that's when the real fun begins. What can I say, I also liked our half Viking half Vampire friend. I am super curious about him, and looking forward to seeing him more in the future books (hopefully).

As for the audio, it was great! I loved the voice and the pacing was just right. The voices, tones, and attitude fit each character well and I was pulled into the story. I love when an audio narrator just makes it effortless to listen. I've listened to quite a few where the narrator is distracting - not the case here.

Overall, definitely an enjoyable read and I'm looking forward to continuing the series.

Review part of book tour. I was provided the audio book in exchange for my honest review.

What a fun and clever read. Leave it to Terry to make you want waffles at every turn of the page.

Carlie is a young lady that enjoys making waffles as much as she enjoy making spells for the local people.
She has been given a special gift, or should I say she was born into a special gift. Carlie is a witch who enjoys helping the local towns people with her gift. But when forced Carlie has some wicked spells you won;t wanna be on the receiving side of.

Carlie is approached by two men looking for some very distinctive trees in her area. First she's not sure if this a ploy or a genuine need of her gift. She consults with Grand to figure this all out.

Soon she goes with the help of her local librarian to determine that she does indeed needs use her gift to help a long lost cousin. She winds up working with a detective and a vampire. Yeah thats right and its not a start of a funny joke. Oh my what a vampire just think Tall, handsome and Viking. Yeah that got you attention.

The three of them find an evil source in the forest that they must bring under control, only there is an evil Wizard protecting the spring.

I really enjoyed meeting the characters and can't wait to see what happens next..... There MUST be another book to continue this story.

This book is a fun little witchy book! Carlie is such a fun character, and she is somebody I would love to know and be friends with. I love how she is in touch with everything around her and how she cares for her little town. She is insightful, caring, smart, small but tough. I found that I enjoyed how much her craft keeps her in touch with nature, especially the moon.
I enjoy how Terry writes…he adds in little bits of life advise that just make sense. For instance this quote was my favorite, “take care of things that take care of you.” The book has many more of these fun, little insightful tidbits. I also like how Terry describes his supernatural characters..some of them are so unique. He also does a good job of describing the classic creatures as well….the mummy was my favorite!
I would have liked to have known more about what happened with Major he is only mentioned briefly in the story…I kind of expected him to be more of a protagonist. I would also like to see a book written about the grandmother, because Carlie mentions her powers so often.
Overall I enjoyed the book and have passed it on for others to enjoy…I rate this book a 3.5 stars!

I received this audio book in exchange for a honest and unbiased review. This story is about a woman Carlie, who happens to really be a witch is needed to help find a hidden area in the deep mystical forest for destinations unknown. This book is a witty, paranormal read with danger, suspense and Gus! What is a witch without her favorite cat? What will she find? who will be with her? So many unanswered questions. This is where I tell you, you have to read the book to answer these questions...

The author, Terry Maggert did a good job writing this Halfway Witchy tale. It has a good story line, a surprising plot and lots of mystery and fun. The narrator, Erin Spencer delivers us a flawless reading with multiple voices and loads of excitement. Good job both of you!

Fantastic Supernatural Tale that will Leave Readers Enchanted

Practice witch and guardian of the painfully isolated town of Halfway, Carly tackles the undead with precision magic, and grants wishes from a mysterious mail system, all while getting wrapped up in a century old mystery involving a murder relative. To help her on the mission, the witch is joined by former military man Jim and a vampire viking.

As a fan of the author, this book is easily one of his best yet.

a quit interesting story with a good plot line , and solid world building
yet I had two problems with this novel :
1- too much self dialogue , and a very high self-esteem from the protagonist
2- an instant, immature love , it was quick , and very lacking .
other than that the novel was enjoyable

Great read

This was a well written, captivating read. I wish we could have gotten more resolution- I wanted to hear about the company and how she handled Jim's death, the "pack" thing, etc. I'm looking forward to more... I want to know more about the characters, I want to know the details. I hope a sequal comes soon.
