The United States has been attacked!

This was not the first time the United States has suffered; six years earlier the Jakarta Pandemic savaged the landscape, killing twenty-eight million Americans. That brought the country to its knees; this new event could destroy it completely.
While most people are sleeping content in their beds, a sinister conspiracy unfolds. An EMP is detonated high in the atmosphere, and in a mere flash more than three hundred million Americans lose power, most cars are rendered useless, and anything connected to the power grid is instantly destroyed.
The nation’s communications grid is down, making reliable information nonexistent. Rumors have surfaced, ranging from nuclear detonations to tsunami waves hitting Massachusetts. The government is nowhere to be seen, as they too were taken by surprise. One glimmer of hope lies out west, where initial reports claim the West Coast was spared most of the effects from the EMP.
With no clear idea of what is happening and with no governmental support, uncertainty turns to panic, panic turns to chaos, and chaos erupts into violence.

Having been forced to fall back after the fall of Boston to marauding gangs, a detachment of three United States Marines find themselves on a new mission: to save their families and head west, away from the crumbling east and the bloodletting and anarchy that is taking hold.
The road west is fraught with challenges, but they feel confident because they’re U.S. Marines. What they don’t know is the obstacles ahead will test their mettle and pit them in a savage battle for survival against a population they once swore to protect.

It is the year 2019 and the fight for survival has just begun!

This book delivers so much, that it's hard to take it all in! Definite action and descriptive characters, along with individual determinations of how "wronged" the American people are. This compliment to the Perseid Collapse series resonated with me. Not to spoil the book, but the ending (to me) was such a tragic culmination of everything a person would want to avoid! Impeccable and flowing writing created a realistic world with realistic people and situations. This is the first book that I've read of G. Michael Hopf, but I've already collected his New World series. This is definitely a talented author that I will be keeping tabs on!
