Nobody's Business

Rate this book
Trevon Campbell’s world changed the moment his ex-girlfriend announced he was a father. Determined to make up for his past mistakes, he gives Trina what she wanted before their breakup, what feels like his soul, which means forgetting the woman he had a one-night stand with, the woman who stole his heart.

Kai Malone doesn’t want to play by her family’s rules. Instead of working for the family business, she became a firefighter. Being a female of multicultural descent, working in a field dominated by men, Kai focuses on her job to ignore the infidelity of her fiancé. Tired of his deceit, she gave in to a one-night stand with a complete stranger, someone she’d never have to see again…or so she thought.

When tragedy strikes, their worlds collide, leaving them no choice but to deal with each other again. It doesn’t take long for them to realize the attraction that brought them together the first time is stronger than ever, forcing Trevon to make the biggest decision of his life.

Overall,
Nobody’s Business is a beautiful tale of love. Not just romantically but also for family and friends. True friends will stay with you through thick and thin. And family will always be there to support you on whatever you go through in life. Love isn’t something you can schedule. Let’s face it, you can schedule nothing in life. Even if one thing is not on the top of your priority list, if life suddenly throws that to you, you have no choice but to deal with it. Sometimes, what’s unexpected can be the best thing that can happen to you. In the end, you’re the only one who can make decisions for yourself. Your life is what you make it to be and what you allow to happen, how you deal with the uncontrollable and letting things fall in their places in due time. That’s life.

EXCERPT
“You heard, huh?”
She rolled her eyes. “Yes.”
Short and to the point. Okay.
“You don’t like the idea of me staying here?”
“Gee, what helped you figure that out?” Her brow went up in mock thought.
Her sarcasm made me laugh. Just to have a basic conversation seemed to be a matter of pulling teeth.
Then why did I like it so much?
I crossed my arms, planted my feet in a wide stance and looked her in the eye. “So you don’t like me. I’m glad that has been established. Let me be clear, I have no feelings about you because I don’t know you.” I shrugged. “At least one of us is mature enough to handle the situation. Though I have to ask, what has your panties in a bunch?”
That comment made her already cat-shaped eyes narrow more. “I don’t like men I don’t know around my kids.”
My head snapped back. “Hold on, you think I’m a pedophile?” Out of all the smart-ass comments she ever said to me, her insinuation pissed me off.
Her head tilted to the side. “I didn’t say that. I said I don’t like men I don’t know around my children. But,” she said as my mouth opened. “Trevon trusts you, I trust him, so I’ll give you a chance.”
The only thing I could do was shake my head. “Damn, woman. You are a piece of work.”
Kelli shrugged. “I just tell it like I see it. You asked and I answered.”
“Okay, I see how this is going to go.” I rubbed my chin, tried to ignore the fact that her attitude turned me on. “So it seems we’ll need some ground rules between us. Since you’re the one who has a problem, I’ll give you a chance to set the rules.”
Kelli’s brow pulled up in surprise, then she bit her lip. “This isn’t my house so there are no rules to set…except one. I’m not cleaning up after you. We will be sharing a bathroom. You use the shower, clean it. I’m not washing your clothes, and when I cook dinner, I cook for everyone.”
I nodded my head in agreement. “Anything else?”
Her head moved side-to-side in a slow motion.
“Good. By the way, I have a rule, too. Try smiling every now and then. You’re an attractive woman. Let people see it. See you later…roomie.” I winked and walked out of the room, but not before seeing her eyes narrow once again. I smiled.
Living here for a few weeks was going to be very interesting.

4 STARS!
I really enjoyed this book. It was quite a rollercoaster of emotions, but not in a bad way. Every time you got settled and comfortable reading, something else happened that either made your heart speed up or break into pieces.
M.J. Kane created characters in this book that intrigued you and made you want to know more about that. Kai isn't your average female character. She is a firefighter, she is confident, and she knows what she wants in life. I like this about her. Tre was a character that I didn't know how to feel about at the beginning. I felt like his feelings were all over the place. But the heartbreaking situation he went through made him grow as a person, and by the end of the book Tre had become my favorite character.
This second chance romance was sweet and inspiring in many ways. It goes from Tre's POV to Kai's POV each chapter, and at first this was hard to get used to because it never specified whose chapter you were one, but once you get a few sentences in you realize who is talking. I'm thinking there is going to be another one, so I will definitely be looking for that one. **NOTE: this is the FOURTH book in the series, but it can be read as a standalone*

Just wow!! I have read the other books in this butterfly series and I more in love with this author's writing with each book!!

This book was a different type of love story to me. Kai and Trevon had a one-night stand and met up again almost a year later. Both were in different relationships and when tragedy struck, they agreed to be friends. I loved how strong Kai was emotionally because she took her time getting to know Trevon. And the fact that Trevon knew he wasn't ready for a relationship when they met again and became friends showed his strength as well.

Even though it seems as part of a series, each book can be read as a stand alone. But it helps to read the other books because there are characters from other books. I can't wait to read the next book - Alone - because I kinda like the character Derrick who is mentioned in this book. He is gonna fall hard!!!

I was given an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review. What happens when you find the one? This is the story of Trevon and Kai. I truly enjoyed this read by M.J. It was great to see the evolution of the main characters as they go through loss and pain to eventually happy ever after. Trevon and Kai fit from the first moment. His intentions to make a family for his son at the beginning would have been a disaster because he had found his forever. This story had some emotional parts which brought some misty eyes. This story was real on so many levels in what some people face on a daily basis. So glad the series will continue with kelli and Derrick story coming next. Great job and highly recommended.

Nobody's Business was a good book. This story is about two people who decide to be friends only, only to fall in love, and then move their relationship to a sexual one. I liked the interaction between the main characters and the little boy. All the secondary characters added to the story as well.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher and Netgalley for an honest review.

A sweet yet difficult story of the possibilities that can come out of a tragedy. Showing there is hope still no matter what challenges you've been through in your life so far. Trevon has to face up to what he really wants and figure out if it's what he really wanted all along while Kai isn't short of decisions of her own to make.

**I received an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review**
Trevon dreams of Kai 8 months after a one-night stand. Trevon had a son, Justin, by Trina. He met her at Georgia Tech. Both had been business majors. He hadn't spoken to Trina in about 2 years then he found out that Trina had been pregnant when they broke up and that they had a son. Kai is 35 and a firefighter. Her uncle and grandfather had also been firefighters. Kai had been on duty when there was a big fire at an apartment complex. She had taken an unresponsive toddler to her partner to give to the paramedics. Kai also helped the mother, but slipped and caught the mother but ended up hurting her back. It turned out to be Trina and Justin, Trevon's family.
Kai was physically and mentally strong. She loved her family, but she took her own path. She could be very determined. She was loving and kind and had a good heart. In the end, she was able to find true love. Trevon was a good man. He cared for his friends and loved his family. He was smart and goal-oriented. He was a kind and good man. Through the twists and turns of this story, he also found true love.
This was a great story with great characters. I highly recommend it.

As Derek and Kelli tell their story  you find this is story of two people who were both at a low point in their lives and even though they had close friends and family were feeling very alone. Through the low point they both figured out how to pull themselves out of those lows. At first there is not a lot of positive feelings for each other, so we get to be a witness as they  go from an almost hate to their developing a friendship and relationship that helps them feel less alone and maybe even full of hope.
This my first time reading a book by M. J. Kane and I enjoyed it a lot. I plan on reading more of her works. I especially can't wait for Shattered. She does such a great job of making the reader feel what the hero and heroine is going through. I especially loved that I could really like Derek and Kelli and not feel a real frustration with either one. You understand from the beginning why they were who they were and why they acted as they did.

I knew I was gonna love Derrick!! Since this is the butterfly series, the metamorphosis of Derrick was a sight to see!! Actually, I think Derrick was always a real family man because of the way he took care of his mother and father - and no-good brother as well. But because of seeing his biological father leave at such a young age implanted in his mind about family dynamics. Then his older brother following in the biological father's footsteps just solidified in his mind that the "gene" of not being a family man.

I liked Kelli as well. When she went through that screaming jag, I really felt that! How many times have I wished I could just vent like that. Instead of her just jumping Derrick's bones (lol), they actually became friends first and really got to know each other. So when they were finally together, the bond was there. M. J. Kane really knows how to weave a realistic story and brought out so many emotions. Wonderful series!!!

This can be read as a standalone , but the characters as from the the Butterfly series. This story is about the Kai, Trina and Trevon. Kai and Trevon had a brief encounter that each never forgot. Trina was Trevon's baby mama, he hurt her but wanted to have a family with her. Tragedy and misfortune seemed flow through out this book, however, love did blossom and grow to make things get better. Kai was a tough young lady who put in the work to make her life better. Trevon was a wonderful father and yet he had to struggle to make it a reality on all fronts. Derrick( Trevon's bff) makes an appearance and finds Kai's sister someone he would like to know better if she wasn't married..

Thank you Ms. Kane for a great read..I love all your books..Great read ...

Really Really Good!

I been searching for the words to say exactly how really great of a story this was.The fact that we get two people, who seem like they are really different only to want the same. Kellie and Derrick give us a very honest and adult look at how a relationship should work especially when you are honest and up front. These are two very likable characters, and you can see some of yourself or someone you know in them. Overall this is a win win for everyone.

"Nobody's Business" by M.J. Kane

What I liked about this novel...

I liked the way this author was able to give the reader a good read of 'Book Four' that continued on so well with the rest of this series with this one being about a wonderful well written story of love. I enjoyed the twist and turns showing the raw and imperfect emotions.... that were presented so well by in Kai and Trevon's story.

What did I like about the leads?....heroine & hero

Kai Malone: heroine...indeed a interesting person...now 35 years old...a firefighter[saves life's], confident, wonderful daughter and friend...who knew her own mind of what she wanted in her life or so she thought until she meets back up with her one night with.... Will Kai finally find the true love that she longed for?

Trevon Campbell: now 30 years old ...what a hero...has met Kai [but didn't know her name]...later finding out he has a son from a ex-girlfriend. He steps up and take on his responsibility. I loved the take charge with his son... Justin. Trevon was smart and goal oriented...a good person. Trevon cared for his family and friends and in the end he loved hard....Will Trevon finally find the true love that he wants and needs in his life?

And lets not leave out a few of those secondary characters...
from....
Trina, Shaun, Derrick, Kelli, Alonso, Justin, Ricky, Lopez, Malik, Andre, Sharice, Brian, Ebony, [Sugar], LaShana, Christina, Mrs. Waters, Mari, Shaun to name a few ...all of these characters that this author used in this novel gave the reader a very intriguing, emotional and captivating read that you will not be able to put down until the end. Be ready for a few complexed individuals that will leave you wanting more.

What was my favorite scene: Taken from Chapter 34....
This is toward the end of the story...

"There was nothing to tell. I figured it was stress from going back to work. I've been away for months.
He didn't seem to buy it, but instead of responding, he stayed quiet as if deep in thought.
Oh God, here it comes, I closed my eyes and prepped for the inevitable.
"Kai..."
I took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. When I opened my eyes, Trevon's expression was
series.
"Yes?"
Will you ..."

Did I read Book 1, 2, and 3 before reading Book 4?

YES!....I have read all of these series!

Can "Nobody's Business" be read as a standalone read?

Yes, but I would recommend you read all three of this author's series...'The Butterfly Memoirs' to fully understand the whole story of what has gone on.

Was there anything I didn't like about "Nobody's Business?

Not really..however, I was holding my breath until the very end!

Would I recommend "Nobody's Business" to other contemporary romantic readers?

Yes!

Will there be a 'Book Five' from the The Butterfly Memoirs by this author?

Yes,I believe its will be ....called .... 'ALONE' ... featuring Derrick and Kelli

Thank you to the author for a good read!

Nobody’s Business (Book Four of the Butterfly Memoirs) is AMAZING! This story begins with a memory of the best night that Trevon Campbell has ever had. As he relives this memory over and over, confusion sets in. He doesn’t know whether to feel guilty, overjoyed, heartbroken or angry about his rash decision to have a one night stand with a woman who is intoxicating and mesmerizing in every way possible. When Trevon finds out that he has a two-year-old son from an ex-girlfriend, he decides that it is time to man up and put forth all of his effort into raising a mini me that he never thought he would have. After a tragic accident brings Trevon closer to this mysterious woman, they can either face the reality that they both screwed up royally and move on…or, they can turn it around and act like that one painfully wonderful memory never occurred.

I enjoyed reading about these two characters because their emotions were raw and imperfect. They both understand all of the mistakes that they have made in the past has brought them to a place in their life where happiness has yet to happen. But…it doesn’t mean that they have completely given up hope. Fate has a strange and miraculous way of bringing people together. Trevon’s confidence and strength are unwavering when it comes to his son, but these personality traits fly out the window with women. When all else fails, his son means the world to him and that made my heart ache for him to find his happiness. Kai is powerful and accomplished, but lacks what she desires as well. When she sees Trevon and his son, she can’t help thinking about her biological clock ticking at thirty five. Is she really happy with how her life has turned out or is there more that she has yet to experience?

In my opinion, this story is targeted to women of all ages. Nobody’s Business is beautiful and very well written. The author shows incredible talent with her descriptiveness, steady pace and complex characters. I really love how both characters have to dig under the skin, in essence to understand that a deeper connection may be there waiting for a chance. I rate this book with five stars due to it’s originality. It captivated my attention and held it throughout the entire story. I will need to go back and read the first three books.

Well Ms. M. J. Kane, you have truly done it again. You created a phenomenal story. Captivated is only one word I can use to express my feelings about this novel. Others are, astonished, in awe of, and moved. I thought you had pulled out all the punches with "Crossroads", but this one had twist and turns that I did not see coming. They truly pulled at my heart strings and kept me turning page for page. I was not ready. I really don't want to give any of the story away, but to see a father's love like that.....well it does something to the heart. Then, you gave the main characters jobs that were believable. I pictured my son in Trevon's position because he just finished college with that major. The icing on the cake was the surprise chapter for the next book in The Butterfly Memoirs. Kudos Ms. Kane on a job well done with this addition to The Butterfly Memoirs. I will be patiently waiting for the next book...

This book just wasn’t for me. I did not care for the baby mama/baby daddy drama scenario that resulted from a hero who would intentionally cheat hoping to get caught so his girlfriend would leave him. What a catch! Problem was she was pregnant at the time of the breakup then didn’t bother to tell him until almost two years later. Then mix in the “other woman” he cheated with, and I felt like I was in the middle of a very bad soap opera. Kept reading even after the baby mama wasn’t in the picture anymore, but found the storyline too predictable. This is one of those rare times I don’t think the hero deserves a HEA. Sadly, for this reviewer, the best thing about the book was the cover. It was very classy.

Convenience or taking a chance on the real thing

Kai and Trevon had a month in the past and who would have thought their present would be a second encounter for them to meet again and for them to know some of the same thing but no matter how many obstacles , questions and staring faces taking a chance on going from friendship to more felt like the right thing. The friendship and family connections were strong in this book and I am glad that Malik was just passing conversation. I hate Kelli didn't get to confront her Johnny come lately husband and what he told Trevon at the wedding he needed to be popped

"Alone" by M. J. Kane

My Thoughts....

I like this love story that featured Derrick ad Keli. Truly these two had some hurdles before they come get their HEA but it was worth it. The author did a wonderful job with its characters where you were able to see their 'joy, pain, love and even commitment' in getting to a wonderful understanding that they belonged together. This was a well written story by this author.

Get Some Business!!

When the one you meet is meant for you, their is no escaping fate. Trevon and Kai meet for one night of passion and later see one another again through circumstances. This was a really good story and right out the gate you are captured. The flow of the story moves at a pace that doesn't slow and takes you for the journey. Trevon and Kai are two people caught in a love at first sight, but our hero thinks he should make his family work. This was just really entertaining and quite enjoyable.

This book okay but didn’t work for me. I’m not a fan of baby mama/baby daddy drama scenarios, especially when they result from the H or h who intentionally cheat hoping to get caught so that their significant other will leave them because they are too cowardly to just break up with the person. I didn’t like Trevon and I didn’t think Kai deserved such a schmuck.
