With a pinpoint humor, and an unparalleled eye for the odd detail, Manny Furious explores the profundity of the mundane with this collection of poetry, haiku, flash fiction and micro-fiction. Worklife, homelife, lovelife, and everything in between is at the mercy of Furious's whiplike control over language, and the absurdity of Existence itself is placed under Furious's microscopic observation to be mocked, ridiculed, and, ultimately, celebrated. With a deft combination of quirk, insight and sheer imagination, PUERILE AND POINTLESS WITH NO HOPE FOR ENLIGHTENEMENT is a poetic journey unlike any made before.
I devoured Puerile and Pointless with No Hope for Enlightenment, the debut poetry and flash fiction collection from the marvelous mind of Manny Furious, in one sitting. From page 1, with the work “ A Rejection Email from a Famed Literary Editor to Manny Furious…” it is clear that this collection is not going to be your run of the mill poetry collection by any means. Conventional craft and structure are used to deliver a refreshing, unconventional collection in which the author explores everything from the seemingly mundane, with his keen sense of observation, to going off into in depth existential meandering. The theme of how complexity leads to complication thereby disrupting the peace of simplicity are strong in the works, “Paradise Lost/Found…” and “The Advent of the Word Virus According to Dipshit Extraordinaire Artimis Magnussen…” Haiku, clever and with a hint of dry humor, are delightfully sprinkled throughout, I was particularly fond of the “Stupid Fucking Cat” ones being a cat lover myself. The style and pace make the stories engaging and the characters come to life; one starts to really root for Manny Furious and Lemon Crush to just date already. Friendship, family, getting older, parenthood, nostalgia, and so much more are tackled with unbridled wit that will keep you entertained page after page. I found the character/author Manny Furious to become relatable throughout the pages in a way that he begins to feel like an old friend you can’t help but to root for. I know I will be reading this collection again and again.
Refreshingly authentic, engaging, and feels like you and Manny are communicating together about life in hilarious, subtle, and obvious ways too. Absolutely loved this poetry and fiction. It is one of the most creative works I’ve read in a long time.
