When Joel stormed out from a fight with a friend, he just wanted some air. The last thing he imagined was that he'd be bitten by a creature straight out of a fairytale, and his life changing forever. Becoming a shifter is one thing, but it turns out that while there's plenty of werewolves out there, who's ever heard of a werefox?
For Cillian, alpha of his pack, life as a wolf shifter is complicated. His pack is one big web of lovers, enemies, and drama, all of which need his attention. On top of that, rogue shifters are invading his territory, and whatever they're up to, it's nothing good. And now there's a brand new shifter that needs to be taken under his wing. He'd know what to do if it was just some new wolf, but a fox shifter?
On the plus side, Joel really is the cutest thing he's ever seen...
This 52,000 word story is a one-shot with a happy ending.
Great read with a little heat, a lot of sweetness, plenty of humor, and even a suspense element. The writing style here is tight and enjoyable. We're third person with mostly Joel's point of view and he is adorable--easiest blusher ever. Cillian is a very non-growly alpha; he leads but doesn't really throw his dominance around. There isn't much in the way of fated mates and insta-love. While there is chemistry and an immediate attraction, the relationship between Joel and Cillian grows organically. This was a neat concept, the idea of a werefox in the midst of a group of werewolves and I enjoyed how it played out.
The one jarring element was the problem with the copyediting. Words were often substituted for each other ("with" for "wit") and twice one of the more prominent secondary characters, Jennifer, was referred to as Alli. These type of things drive some people mad but I was willing to overlook them in favor of the superior narrative.
