Written especially for a young audience, a must-read biography of Steve Jobs: visionary, entrepreneur, inventor, and cofounder of Apple.
Visionary. Pioneer. Little terror. Entrepreneur. Inventor. College dropout. Creative genius. These are just a few of the words used to describe the late Steve Jobs, cofounder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Apple Inc. Available in both paperback and hardcover, Patricia Lakin’s biography for middle-grade readers tells the captivating and inspirational story of the ‘Thomas Edison’ of our time.
Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or villify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. While some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.
"You have to trust in something -- your gut, destiny, life, karma... And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition."
"As for choosing a life path, he felt the key was finding what you love and pursuing it passionately."
It's a very short and easy to read compilation of the life and works of Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Inc. The book is the journey of Jobs from a third-grade terror to a revolutionary. Lakin tries to convey the fact that the entire design process is important and not just the final product similar to the importance of struggle and not just the success in life. I would definitely recommend this one. Happy reading!
Good as a short and fast paced read to know about Steve Jobs life!
The book is a simple write up of Steve Jobs journey in not just creating Apple as a company but daring to institute it as the most revolutionary innovation of the times when words like ‘computer’ and ‘internet’ had just started to echo in some people’s minds. I think everyone will agree that leading the creation of and launching a closed operating system could not have been done any better than by him.
The book is a narration of his childhood memories, his struggles and his perseverance in creating a dent in the universe. It also highlights some of the things and quotes he did or said that are truly inspirational and impressive like unquestionably his marketing and packaging sensibility; simplicity in product & store designs or even his way of living life; and his strive to continue to innovate for better customer experience.
But all said, I do believe that a well-written book usually helps remember such great and inspirational stories amid all the other great stories that we read. So, though the book outlines major series of events that occurred from Steve Jobs birth to the launch of iPhone, I remained disconnected with the story. To me, this came as a bunch of important but separated facts on his life. Also, for those willing to gain some business insights into Apple, this book has less information for you – it is truly and only about Steve Jobs life.
Yet, I admire the way the author understood the significant chapters of his life and has captured most important lessons for her readers in this short book.
Normally I tend to find biographies boring, however, this one was interesting and a fast read. It wasn't worded in a difficult way to understand all the technology going on around Steve Jobs. I like how Lakin kept the novel realistic by including the good and bad of Steve Job's life (ex: his outbursts and crying.) This book did a great job of looking into Steve Job's brain and showing the reasoning that went into his life choices.
Patricia Lakin did a fantastic job writing the biography of Apple Inc. creator Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs Thinking Differently by Patricia Lakin travels through time for you to see how Apple Inc. was built up so high. Steve starts his life put up for adoption and in 1955 Paul and Clara chose to adopt Steve. Throughout Grade school Steve showed high interest technology. However in school he did not show any interest in learning, he was a turbulent child. However in the fourth grade his teacher “Teddy” Hill had a large impact on Steve’s school work. Mrs. Hill taught advanced fourth grade classes to Steve. Throughout high school Steve really showed interest in technology. When Steve reached college he was frustrated to take the required classes. So after the sixth month he dropped out of Reeg college. Apple became an official incorporation in 1976 and the Apple II was the computer that set the company on fire. Patricia Lakin has done a great job making this book and creating an easy and fast read that is full of information that is presented in an easy to understand format. Anyone who is interested in technology and the making of it should find this book interesting and a fun read.
The book Steve jobs by Patricia Lakin, was for sure a fine read. It offered a good explanation of computer/electronics pioneer and Apple co-founder as well as quotes and information from news articles, speeches, and other books. Patricia follows Jobs’s life along a linear trajectory of a gifted boy through an incredible college dropout to then becoming an Apple genius. She finds similarities between his life and changes in technology and society. She also describes his outbursts and relentless arguments with employees and investors that ended in his crying jags, as well as a stubborn streak that resulted in Jobs denying key employees stock options and his initial refusal to accept paternity of a daughter born from an early relationship. One of the things that was very interesting about the book was how the college dropout has given a lot to information about technology globally and how after that dropout his story began. “And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life.So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out okay. It was pretty scary at the time.” His products like Mac computer, iPod, iPhone and iPad are today among millions of people worldwide. “How people lived and communicated was going to be changed by us, changed forever, changed more than anyone could predict exactly…” These revolutionary products are result of Steve Jobs efforts. They had no idea of this when they started work at Steve’s house, when they got order computers that they made from scratch. “Things became much more clear … not these magical things that just appeared in one’s environment, that one had no knowledge of their interior.”The idea of complete computer with monitor, keyboard and mouse came to their mind after annual computer festival in New Jersey. While there were shortage of money for Apple II computer Mike Markkula was ready to fund with condition that Woz leave HP Job. There was quite a competition at the time but Apple II was launched with a special program and the market started to grow continuously. Woz could not believe this success of apple. “I was shocked, just completely shocked, Woz said. It was the first and most astounding success for Apple the company”. It was a tough to be in because it was not easy to create a small computer that could do more than the ordinary ones that already existed. “The real jump with the apple 2 was that it was a finish product. It was the first computer that you could buy that wasn't a kit. It was fully assembled and you had its own case and its own keyboard and you could really sir down and start to use it.” By the age of 25, Steve was a superstar and had already become a millionaire. The new generation of computers such as Macintosh and Lisa was ready for market in 1984. Steve knew he had to take this opportunity.“If you want to live your life in a creative way, as an artist, you have to not look back too much.” It was launched wonderfully linking it with a novel 1984. It left a Mac-Mania effect on public. After another successful success, Steve started to be harsh to worker for hard work. However, this was not entertained by John Scully and other workers. Slowly, he started his new business with his next computer and Pixar Company. In the end of all of this, Steve decided to sell all the Apple shares except for one share. He needed the money for operating the company. It was a tough choice that steve had to make but he knew that it would turn out to be good. “Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encounter to help me make the big choices in life....”
After Steve left the Apple, their business also gone down. After 12 years of separation from Apple, a company that Steve jobs established and nurtured, he came back to Apple in June 1997 replacing Amelia with a special request from Apple management. Steve new it was time for a change once again. “In order to learn how to do something well, you have to fail sometimes.” Unfortunately it was to late for Steve, but his story of success continues to teach us many things. This is why the book is good and so interesting. Steve jobs teaches us many things in this book and one of the most important being that “Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else’s life.” This is exactly what this book shows. Follow what you decide to follow. Don’t waste your time doing something you do not enjoy. If you have a dream chase it. We only live one life in this world. Live it how you want. That is what makes this book absolutely enjoyable. It makes us “Think different.”
Aladdin, 2011, 175 pp., $7.99 ISBN-07:9781481435307 Steve Jobs: Thinking Differently Patricia Lakin
An orphan. A third grade terror. An inventor. A pioneer. A college dropout. A visionary. A geek. A revolutionary. Steve Jobs, with the help of his friend “Woz”, made a priceless friendship that made a priceless company. Actually, it was worth billions of dollars. In their very own garage, they made that company. The road to making the company wasn’t that easy, though. Once he formed Apple Inc. for the first time, he later got fired from his own company.
Steve Jobs: Thinking Differently was a vivid description of Jobs journey from grade school to Reed College, from India to Atari, from Apple to NeXT to Pixar and his subsequent return to Apple. He worked hard, and before he retired, he was the cofounder, chairman, and the chief executive officer of Apple Inc. Just like Jobs himself, this biography was fascinating, unforgettable, and a real workout to stop reading. I recommend this book to anyone, especially those who need a confidence boost.
This is a simple, direct, and fast paced biography of Steve Jobs, a man set out to make a dent in the Universe. The author does not overly glorify the legend that is Steve Jobs. Instead we see a very human and flawed side of him that is not visible in his public persona. Through out this book, I took a journey with the author as she pulled out different events of Steve's life through narration, and quotes from people who knew him intimately. Granted that it is only 175 pages long, I ended up reading this in one sitting.
The transcript from the "Think Different" ad at the end truly made me feel inspired and realize how much he had touched our lives for generations to come, and truly created a dent in our Universe that would resonate with the rebels even long after he is gone.
" Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The Rebel. The troublemakers. The round pages in the square holes. The one who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them because they change things. They push the human race forward. While some may see them as crazy ones we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do " - Steve Jobs
This book was a really good book. It allowed me to have a better understanding on Steve Jobs and how he wanted things to be done with Apple. The book gives a good explanation on Steve Jobs work style and how he treated his employees. It uses figurative language such as similes and metaphors to explain what growing up was like for him. He was a trouble maker as a child but a genius as an adult. He started working on computers in his dads garage and eventually created a big company making and selling computers. I just wish that there was a bit more detail on Apples competitors and how Steve worked to make Apples products better than others. Other then that, I would recommend this book to people who would like to learn more about Steve Jobs or learn about him for the first time.
This was an interesting book because of how they eplained about his personal life. Wanting to be connected to nature and explaining he was adopted. I like how they explaimed the build up into his succesful company, Apple. Starting in his dad's garage. It gave me a great idea of what kind of person he really was. Not one of those biographies where they only focus on his achievements. It was interesring to learn about working at Atari and how he dropped out of college instead of talking about his company. And what he believed, what he wore, which he rarely took showers and did fasting a lot. Overall, I thought it was a great book with a lot of detail.
This book shows the beginings of apple computers with its founders. Add in with this this book is the life story of one Steve . P . Jobs and the creating of the major corperation The apple coperaion. with finding out that steve has a sister and that he left apple to start NExT computers. over this time period everything during this place were the book took place is leading up to the exact moments that steve made an exciting break throw . Here is one thing that steve jobs has said ," to one of his employes that he would know that it is not done perfect"page 106.
This is an excellent biography for middle grade readers, with plenty of insight into how Jobs approached life and his work. Lakin doesn't try to make Jobs out to be some kind of saint which I appreciated. This will be especially interesting to kids who are into computers and technology, but I think every young reader could benefit from learning about someone who so changed the world we live in today.
I love this book. This is because you learn more about Steve as a person and it's not about success. This book is about how he found out about himself, an who he was. This is about the things that he went through and how he got through them. I like this book because it give him a set character of how he was in public vs when he was him real self.
How do you write a book for 8-14 year olds about an icon like Steve Jobs without getting preachy or judgmental? Lakin did a fine job. (Heh) Although it isn’t perfect, I rounded up to 5 stars because I want to encourage middle grade kids to read it. And talk about it.

I read this along with my son. The book did a nice job of moving forward at a good pace, offering many details about Steve Jobs that will be interesting and inspirational to kids.

Steve Jobs: Thinking Differently by Patricia Lakin is a biography about Steve Jobs. The book talks about his early life, to him dropping out of college, to becoming the co-founder of the world's most valuable company. Lakin told a lot of separate experiences Jobs had encountered throughout his years and expressed his level of inspiration until the day he dies.
The beginning of the book talks about Steve's childhood. He was born on February 24, 1955. His birth parents, John Jandali and Joanne Scheible, had to make an extraordinary difficult decision and give up Steve for adoption. They wanted to further their education and they didn't think they could do so while having to take care of a child. So they day Steve was born, he was put up for adoption. Not to much later, Clara and Paul Jobs had adopted Steve and had promised Steve's birth parents to send him to college.
Steve grew up in different cities around central California. He was a very inquisitive, energetic, and imaginative kid. His fascination with learning started in 4th grade. After 4th grade, he skipped straight to middle school. All through his childhood he had a very large fascination with technology. Once completing middle school, he attended Homestead High School. He joined an electronics class at his school and even had a summer job at HP's factory. Steve Jobs graduated high school and moved onto college. By now his parents barely had enough money for him to attend a decorative, private liberal arts college named Reed College. While in college Steve didn't feel that college was helping him further his education or his future career. About a year later Jobs needed money so he was hired to work for a video game company. The owner of the video game company was an inspiration to Jobs and would mentally help him achieve his future goals.
In 1976, Jobs and his close friend Wozniak, who worked for HP, worked in Steve's family garage and would later come to create a revolutionary piece of technology. Steve sold his van and Wozniak sold his expensive calculator. Together they funded their operation and began to put together parts and would create the first Apple computer. Together they went around and found more and more people who wanted to buy this amazing new personal computer. Later the duo invented the Apple 2, which was essentially a much better and more reliable version of the first computer. The two inventors went through lots of hardships and were turned down by companies a countless number of times. Years later, Wozniak left apple due to injuries from an automobile crash. Nowadays, he still receivers a small amount of money from Apple. Steve's company grew bigger and bigger and through many struggles, eventually became the company we all know and love today.
This book was very fascinating for me. The whole biography was set at a good pace and I was always interested to see what would happen next in his life. I might even read the newer and more advanced Steve Jobs book due to my liking for this one. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys non-fiction or biography books. I learned a lot from this book and I might be interested in starting to read more biographies in the future.
This biography about Steve Jobs teaches us about what it was like in his older 20's and how he becomes the biggest technology CEO in the world.Steve Jobs encounters many objects in his career but breaks through them. This book starts out slow but begins to become more interesting, I would recommend this book to people who like learning about technology and biographies.
