Wales 1170. The kingdom of Gwynedd is in flames and civil strife threatens to tear it apart. King Owain’s passing pits brother against brother. Marauders roam the land and the English watch the border with hungry eyes. Sickened by bloodshed, Madoc, younger son of the late king, gathers his people and embarks on a quest that will alter history and push the boundaries of the known world. Seen through the eyes of the young people of the community, Hinterland is a tale of discovery and adventure, violence and betrayal, where two civilisations must learn to live together or see one fall to destruction.
I was really impressed with this story. The subject matter is one that lends itself well for a novel and it's amazing that few people have attempted such a story before now. The dialogue is engaging and you will grow to care for the characters involved, wanting to read on as you want to know and share their fate. The twists in this story make for an enticing read. This is a story that I would recommend many to read.
For many years i have been fascinated with the legend of Prince Madog and the Welsh Indians. while i have read several history books on the subject this was the first novel I've read. i thoroughly enjoyed this book. it is quite fast paced and the characters are well formed and believable. if however you have no knowledge of Welsh history then i would suggest reading the historical notes at the back first. also a quick google search of the life and death of Owain Gwynedd Prince of the Welsh may help you to place the story and its events in their historical backdrop.
