The last volume I was able to get to on my catch-up. It sees Asuta, the Earthling who ended up getting thrust into another world, Manning the stove for not just the Fa clan, but now being offered a job to sell his wares elsewhere (specifically the wedding of the Rutim boy, Gazran).

In terms of the cooking, not too many outlandish new dishes as the stew and soup are the problem for the episode, Asuta trying to make a tasty dish besides baked poitan (their potato equivalent) and cooked meat (hamburgers, steak). We get introduced to some new ingredients, namely a fruit that tastes like a tomato but looks like a pumpkin. The needs of the forest edge are going to come into conflict with what Asuta can cook up, so he needs to keep that in mind as he tests dishes to use in the feast.

First half of the story is a little alien for the reader and for Asuta, as Ai Fa brings him to a city of stone that is shockingly too modern compared to the huts and villages of the Forest Edge clan he knows. We also get caught up in issues of racism, clan leadership, and military policing. Ultimately ends in us meeting a new character who seems to be a "good" guy potentially, a guardsman of the leader of the city and an opportunist who sees the poor leadership of the Suun clan as something needing to be addressed + offering his aid to do so. It's far too early for Ai Fa and Asuta to make any kind of movement on that front, but it seems conflict with the Suun is inevitable.

The rest of the story involves the wedding of the Rutim clan member, and Asuta manning the stove. Don't worry too much about this being another alien scenario, as Asuta is actually going to cook and present the dish at the Ruu settlement, and because of this we're familiar with more than half the cast involved (like Times Ruu, Vina, Granny Jiba, Reina Ruu, Giza, Donda, etc). There's a new addition with one of the branch families and some drama involving their family (Shuun Ruu; his sister seems to be another girl who may be added to the "harem" roster too as Asuta innocently compliments her on being "wife" material when she's beating herself up over being weak; this results in causing her to blush). In addition, there's more drama involving Asuta's house allegiance. Will he stay with Ai Fa? Will the Ruu girls convince him to leave? Does Ai Fa even want him to stay?

The conclusion was ok, but there's just a lot of unresolved tension with the Suun clan, and this whole rebellion idea hanging over their heads concocted by the man from the city of stone. It's kinda overwhelming. And the question of where the romance goes, and how long that will take is also in the back of the plot (Ai Fa's embarrassment not really helping there; Rena and Vina Ruu's half hearted approaches to explain their feelings also not gonna work, gotta be honest). There are some positive characters who will be there to help Asuta, like Ludo and Gazran, and hopefully they can steer the plot towards a bright conclusion together. Even the heads of the Ruu and Rutim are starting to come around on him though, so he's sure to have many allies by the end.

What a brilliant book! Volume 3 was awesome. I enjoyed the marriage celebration, the incident in the town as well as the incident at the celebration and the character growth in both members of the Fa clan. And that is enough spoilers. I am becoming addicted to this series and a huge fan of eda's work. Eda is a brilliant writer and world builder and blows believable life into his story. Read the Cooking With Wild Game series, guys. I dare you

Love!

It’s interesting see how things are slowly growing and the world is expanding. I am waiting for the other shoe to drop because I just know it’s coming.

It's fascinating to see the progress that Asuta is making fitting in. I genuinely curious to see how he goes on from here given there are several volumes to go!
