When two men with complicated past meet at the conference in Alaska, things are already on shaky ground.
Derek Warden is certain his boss sent him to cover the conference in the middle of nowhere, Alaska, to punish him for something. After an unpleasant phonecall from his father who tries to stop him from going, Derek is ready for the whole thing to be over before it even begins. Hayden Shaw has been looking forward to this conference for months. The problem of fracking is very dear to his heart and he couldn’t wait to spend the long weekend with like-minded people.
Neither of them expected the big earthquake, but most importantly – they didn’t expect each other. Meeting again after over a decade may result in something even more surprising that the ground trembling under their feet.
Six authors, six stand-alone stories, one earthquake.
It was nice ... I thought the part with "meeting again after over a decade" meant the one who got away theme. But it wasn't as much. Back in college, Derek & Hayden clashed heads and argued a lot, although those arguments could also be considered foreplay (haha!). But they haven't had a chance to act on it until now. Both men were likeable. The earthquake wasn't as disastrous as I thought it would be, but it did make both men stranded at the Alaskan resort.
When a powerful senators son and an environmentalist meet in college sparks flew and not the good kind. Whenever Derek and Haydon were together they argued, then one day things seemed different when Derek agreed to cover a story for the school paper, Then for some unknown reason to Hayden Derek buried the story and their feelings as well..12 years later the sparks are still there. This story had a great premise as a second chance story. I was a bit disappointed to find out that their meeting in college wasn’t romantic. Where the story had lots of good points I would have liked more focus on the Earthquake. Also it was mentioned a few times that Derek once was a fireman he had a scar but then nothing was told as to what happened. It is a good story with a quick pace. I wanted to keep reading to see if Derek and Hayden got together and what their backstory was. The paragraph of their first kiss had me week in the knees. If you like stories about Natural disasters, Earthquakes, reporters, environmentalists and a pretty sweet romance with some moderate man-sex this is for you.
Derek and Hayden have a history in college of antagonizing each other. Derek is the son of a powerful senator, Hayden is a dedicated environmentalist. When the two are reunited in Alaska at a conference about fracking, things become difficult. While I did think this was a “second chance” story, it isn’t in a way, since the two had never gotten together in college. They bickered and fought about everything in class but were never together. The earthquake is sort of in the background here. It’s the vehicle that gets them talking but I didn’t feel it was the focus. When we get the back story of their history I felt bad for Hayden. The story is short and relatively angst-free with clear writing and a fairly smooth flow. I would have liked to know what happened (Derek’s dad, for example) after the conference.
I enjoyed this installment in the series. One of my favorite kinds of stories is enemies-to-lovers, and this delivered on all the high points of the plot device. Derek and Hayden have terrific chemistry, and it's obvious that the "hate" between them is actually not dislike or meanness. They come away from their arguments sharper, and the heat between them is great.
There were a few things that felt a bit cliched at times, such as Hayden's assistant. I really wish she hadn't been part of the story--I'm not a big fan of women who are only in a story so they can pressure their male friends to make a move, and she was the most irritating variety of that kind of character. However, she wasn't in it much, and she was gone by the time the men worked things through for themselves.
The flow, pacing, and heat level were just right for the setting and characters. This was a nice, steamy read.

derek and haydan has an past after 12 years they end up in Alaska but their past is not past lovers or anything like that more like enemies sort of thing. But There would've been something more if things in the past didn't intervene. now they have this chance to set things right and hope they take it.
