The Liber Celestis of St. Bridget of Sweden: The Middle English Version in British Library MS Claudius B i, together with a life of the saint from the ...
St. Bridget of Sweden (1303-73) experienced supernatural revelations throughout her life while a lady-in-waiting at the Swedish court, as she founded a monastery for nuns and monks, and during her religious pilgrimages throughout Italy. This work is a critical edition of one of the two complete Middle English translations of the Liber Celestis , a manual of St. Bridget's visions recorded by her spiritual directors.
The manuscript from which this was edited has some missing leaves, and missing material in this edition is inserted from another manuscript...ish. The incomplete chapters in the primary MS are completed from the other MS, but the completely lost chapters are not only omitted, which is bad, but SILENTLY omitted, which is even worse. Given the brevity of the completely missing material (I'd guess 10 printed pages, perhaps less) and the length of the text as presented (491 printed pages), the decision to jettison them without any comment is baffling.
