By Trade and by Trust: A pride and prejudice variation

A man who cannot bring himself to cross one county goes halfway round the world instead. A woman is given precisely what she asked for.

From the bestselling author of Insults , Compromise(s) and Comeuppance comes the second book of By Patience and by Paper, in which the accounts of the first are opened and found still running.

Caroline Bingley is carried north into Westmorland, to bare fell, long rain and a silence London conversation cannot fill. She has all the time in the world to set what she wanted beside what she has.Charles Bingley puts an ocean between himself and everything he was ever given. He finds that a city may require a man without inviting him, and that he is unaccountably good at being required.Introducing the Hon. Frederick Lowe, who told her exactly what he was before she accepted him. She heard what she wished to hear. He proposes to go on being it.Fitzwilliam Darcy is now the man the whole family writes to when anything goes wrong. He bears it well. He bears most things well, which is the difficulty.Elizabeth Darcy holds the one office nobody else can preventing her husband from turning into a monument. She discharges it daily, with relish.Mary Bennet has stopped quoting Fordyce and started reading everything else. She means to marry a man to whom she is not merely agreeable but necessary, and does not expect to find him.Richard Fitzwilliam has spent twenty years being charming, an excellent way of never being asked anything difficult. It answers with all England but one lady, before whom he can be nothing but sincere, and has no notion how it is done.Introducing Mr. Joseph Harcourt, who went out to make a fortune, found something he wanted far more, and has never regretted the exchange.Introducing Charu, who takes the measure of an Englishman across a dinner table in a quarter of an hour.Introducing Satya, aged seven, who opens a door, admits a bewildered Englishman, names his entire concern by accident, and appoints herself its principal partner. She declines to be argued with.Anne de Bourgh would like to meet, before the Season is out, one gentleman who admires something about her besides Rosings. Failing that, she will arrange other people's happiness, at which she is unnervingly good.Introducing Mr. Geoffrey Hartwell, who buried a wife and a child four years ago and said very little about it. He should like to be happy again, and does not mean to apologise for it.Lady Catherine de Bourgh writes to concede that she was wrong and her nephew right, and expects never to be reminded of it.Mrs. Bennet has found the worthier thing to carry, and will not be parted from it.Also Thompson of Newcastle; Captain Askew and the Constance; the Westons; Kitty, Lydia and Georgiana; and an elephant named Laddoo.

Everything in this book is a work of fiction. It touches upon real people, movements, practices and events of the period, but offers no record of them, and the author accepts no responsibility for any conclusion drawn from it.

In some respects, this was not as compelling as the first book, but it was still engaging and well written. The focus shifts from Darcy and Elizabeth to Bingley, Caroline, Anne de Bough, Col Fitzwilliam, and Mary.

Even though Darcy and Elizabeth are not the focus, they are included in the book and are very happy. I didn’t mind that the book shifted to other characters.

At times, the details of Bingley’s life in India and the building of his business seemed to slow the pace too much. There were a lot of details that showed the author’s research and knowledge, but the details weighed the story down a bit. Surprisingly, whenever I began to get tired of these details the author managed to shift the story or introduce something more interesting.

4.5-stars rounded up because I’m enjoying the series and looking forward to the final book.

This Pride and Prejudice continues as Darcy and Elizabeth have married, and Jane has a son with Weston. The remaining Bennets finally arrive at Pemberley but what of the Bingleys.
An entertaining and well-written story

This is the second book in the trilogy and it was as wonderful as the first. The characters were fleshed out, the story took unexpected turns and it was beautifully written. Highly recommended and looking forward to the next in the series - I don't want it to end, though!
