Nick Bland was born in the Yarra Valley of Australia, in 1973. He was the son of an artist and a primary school teacher, and spent his early years on the farm where his parents lived. At age six, he moved with his family to 'the bush'. He wanted to be a cartoonist and a writer from a very young age. In 1996, he took a job at a book store, and decided to write and illustrate children's books. His first book, "A Monster Wrote Me a Letter" was published in Australia in 2005. He currently lives in Darwin, Australia and works full time as an author illustrator.
When Bear wakes to a great deal of noise, he is ready to get to the bottom of it all. He discovers that the other animals in the forest are having a band practice. Bear, ever the curious one, wants to see what it is all about, given the chance to try all the different instruments. Alas, many are hard for him to grasp and it leaves him less than happy. By the end, Bear finds the perfect instrument, though it may not be what the others had envisioned for him. Neo read this one and is showing that he is able to catch on, not only to the words, but the rhyming rhythm of the sentences. As we prepare for *gasp* school again, a little reading will shake off the cobwebs.
This one is my little boy's all time favorite book. From the get go every time I read it to him I would fill it with fun actions like banging on the page for drums, taking big breaths for the trumpet, stomping our feet for elephants, dancing, etc. The cadence of the story is really good for keeping baby/ toddler's attention too. Definitely a super cute and fun book and one that I highly recommend.
Book:The Very Noisy Bear Author: Nick Bland Genre: Picture books, Children’s Books Recommend: Yes Amount of Pages 24 My feelings:
I really enjoy children's books. And read them to my kids every night. But one thing I don't do is review them. Why I don't know, but I decided it was time to start. Told with charm and heart, this enchanting book weaves a delightful storyline that will capture the hearts of all young readers. The vibrant illustrations and dynamic text create an immersive reading experience that will keep children engaged from start to finish. Beyond its entertainment value, "The Very Noisy Bear" also delivers a valuable lesson about trying new things. As the grumpy bear discovers, stepping out of one's comfort zone can lead to unexpected joy and ignite a newfound passion. With each turned page, children are reminded to approach new activities with an open mind, for they never know what wonderful surprises may await them. As a reader, I was thoroughly delighted by this endearing tale and its meaningful message.
Highly recommend.

"The Very Noisy Bear" is about a cranky yet curious bear who hears the other forest animals making a lot of noise. He finds that they are playing musical instruments, and the bear wants to give it a try! He plays the drums, a guitar, and a trumpet but doesn't have much success with any of them. Discouraged, the bear finally tries to sing instead and the audience loves his roars and his performance! He becomes very excited about this, and after the band parts for the night, he continues his musical journey and tries to learn the violin.
This book has a very cute and engaging storyline that all kids can enjoy. The illustrations and text variety have the ability to captivate children and allows them to have fun while reading. In the terms of teaching children a lesson, "The Very Noisy Bear" demonstrates how trying something new can be fun and spark a new passion. The bear was originally upset at all the noise the music was making, but once he joined his friends and tried it, he ended up loving music and wanted to try every instrument. This book tells kids to remain open-minded about new activities because they may find a new love for something they once did not care for. I enjoyed this book a lot; it is very entertaining and fun to read. Although the point of the story is not to teach a lesson, I believe children need books in which they can truly enjoy without having morals or messages being at thrown at them. I gave this book 4 stars because of how cute and silly it is, but I wish there was some instance in which the bear had more of an internal struggle to make it more applicable to children's lives. I recommend this book to all parents and teachers; I think that every child will love this book for its engaging plot, illustrations, and its ability to encourage kids to try something new that may scare them.
Nick Bland’s The Very Noisy Bear (part of his The Very Cranky Bear series) sees Bear wakened from hibernation in the Jingle Jangle Jungle by the sound of music.
One by one, the animals in the jungle band offer Bear the chance to try their instruments. Bear bangs and bashes on the drums, strums wildly on the guitar, and screeches on the trumpet. The ‘quality’ of sound produced by Bear generates a mass exodus of animals. Eventually, the sheep wonders:
Have you ever tried a microphone? It’s just a simple thing. You only have to hold it up, clear your throat and sing!
Now accompanied by the jungle band, Bear’s earlier cacophonous sounds transform into a vocal performance that leaves the audience calling for more.
The Very Noisy Bear is a wonderful ‘read aloud’ book. Make as many sounds (musical or otherwise) as you like. And remember that, just like bear, if you have a voice, you have an instrument – play away!
This is the first one I read in this series and I really liked it for my little one. My kids get a kick out of cranky animals , and this bear didn't disappoint! We liked the Jingle Jangle Jungle and all the instruments. I also liked the message about trying new things until you find something you like!
Love Nick Bland's books for the littles - this one a little less than The Cranky Bear and The Hungry Bear, but still great. Bought the boxed set of paper which are nice and thin for travelling, but prefer the board books if you have room on the shelf.
My niece LOVES this book. So much so, that I have this puppy 95% memorized (The trumpet part still trips me of when reciting from memory) already. She even knows her favorite pages (read fast after the drum part or she'll turn the pages at top speed to get to the roaring part!).
A bear wakes up to a noisy forest and he is invited to find an instrument to play in their band. A fun book with lots of humour. The rhymes are silly and the drawings are super cute. Not really any big messages in this book but you learn about musical instruments.
Cranky Bear and his friends are back, and discovering musical instruments together! Illustrations seemed less awesome than previous books in the series!
Mummy really enjoyed reading this book to me. We’ll probably read it again when I’m bigger so I can understand it better. I did like that all the bear’s friends were supportive of him!
Cranky Bear is back for his fifth book in the series. This time Cranky gets his music on and tries to find a musical instrument he can play with rather disastrous results. He is joined by his jungle friends (Lion, Zebra, Moose and Sheep) who try to help him navigate the world of musical instruments.
We are huge fans of the series here and have all the books (The Very Cranky Bear, The Very Itchy Bear, The Very Hungry Bear, and The Very Brave Bear). Saw this on the shelf and didn't even think twice before putting it in the shopping trolley. Glad I did.
This is another lovely story of Bear learning to keep trying and never give up. Bear is really quite terrible at playing all the instruments given to him. Just as he was about to give up he started to sing and what do you know, he totally rocks at singing.
Everything about these books are delightful, the art work, the lyrical story, the message behind the story. You do not have to read them in order either so just pick up a book and away you go.
Another wonderful installment in the series that your kids will love if they are Cranky Bear fans.
I haven't read any of the others in the series but we picked this up with a selection of other bear based books and quite enjoyed it. I particularly liked the illustrations, with their soft style and humour. My son likes the noises. Obviously.
