Part one of Parallel An Experiment in Temptation“I don’t want an open marriage, but if you’re interested, then maybe we could try an experiment.”Megan and Malik Trammell have been together for over ten years. They have love. They have great jobs. They have three kids. And they are suddenly each faced with a nearly irresistible temptation.David McKinley is young and hung, a junior lawyer at Meg's firm, where she finds herself wanting to break every rule in the book. Elena Maskova looks like a model and her wicked smile hints hints at a willingness to do just about anything. So they try something new--they have decided to have flings. Only one no lies.Find out what happens when their mutual adventure begins to diverge.
I'm a big fan of Kenny Wright's work and, to a lesser degree, Ben Boswell's. The two authors have teamed up to write the two-part "Parallel Lines," which ends up reflecting the two authors' unique themes. Wright is the bigger romantic, and "Parallel Lines" is grounded in the romance of Megan and Mal. But their marriage is tested when the two spouses agree to give into the temptations of sexual encounters with other people--a young associate in Megan's law office and a student in Mal's yoga classes. It's in this "experiment in temptation" that Boswell's influence is most keenly felt. There's a dark side to Boswell's work, and it's here in Parallel Lines, too. The experiment is erotic for both Megan and Mal, but it's also fertile grounds for jealousy, obsession, weakness, and dangerous consequences. These are all flawed characters yet also believable ones (for the most part), and Wright and Boswell keep the tension taut throughout--sometimes uncomfortably so (but then I'm a romantiC).
This was my first time reading a book in this genre. I thought of myself as a bit of an unfeeling sociopath, but this book gave me anxiety. Reading about David and Meg together caused me physical discomfort. I gave this book the five stars because I didn't know that could happen. The writing and the characterizations are excellent, enough to convince me that their feelings were authentic.
I have just re-read this series and enjoyed it just as much, and perhaps more, than my first read.
Mal the husband was a pretty cool but quirky guy. Meg, his beautiful and accomplished wife became infatuated with a predator/jerk with a big unit - David. It was hard to watch her risk everything for David. Mal sums up David quite nicely:-
“David, man, what the fuck is wrong with you?” David smirked. Success. He’d gotten under Mal’s skin. “What’s the problem, bro?” Mal chuckled. Bro. “The problem is you. You’re a good looking guy. You’ve got a huge prick.” David’s smile grew. Mal continued. “You’ve got to be pretty smart and talented to get and keep a job at Mason Rhodes. So why are you such a fucking douche? You’re a genetic lottery winner, show a little class.”
Elena, Mal's intrigue, just proves how much smarter women are than men, and she's adventurously fun as well. The relationship between the four people is exciting to watch as it grows and changes, and as they grow from their experiences.
The twists at the end certainly caught me by surprise. Keep reading to the end.
This is a great story. As you start reading it’s hard to understand what genre it fits in. But as it goes along the submissive nature of both members of the couple grows.
But even finishing the first book doesn’t make it obvious how it will end up. And that makes a great story. I don’t want to just read about sex, that’s a necessary, but not sufficient reason for calling it a great book.
You need the psychological stress to keep you thinking as well as reading and these authors know how to write that.
I’m off to read the second book and you should as well.
(Volume 2 is saved as Ben Boswell's authorship) This same review is copied to both editions.
This is a two volume series. One is free on Kindle Plus, the second is at regular price. An excellent investment. Read the free volume one and you’ll probably buy both.
They did a magnificent job on this series. The editing is as good as anything done on paper with a publisher. The editing is flawless.
The couple are in their late thirties, with three kids, under ten. Meg and Mal (Meagan and Malachi) Meg is an attorney, Mal is a Yoga Instructor. The perspectives alternate from him to her. You really get exposed to both of their minds. You have a real connection with both of them. (I wish more writers did this).
Both of them encounter potential playmates at their places of employment. Both are mutually attracted to them. When the female spouse of a couple they are close friends with starts an affair with a co-worker, they have some interesting conversations.
Meg is offered a three day trip to Cali to service a client. She has a chance to take her ‘crush’ along as an assistant. She fantasizes about a lot more than work. She brings this trip up to Mal, she both gets and offers ‘permission’ to play, not realizing Mal already has somebody he’s really attracted to, hitting on him. She wanted to be fair, but had no idea that sword was going to cut both ways, immediately.
We get to see both affairs develop and eventually coalesce.
Mal gets to witness that his fifteen year, in control, spouse is a closet submissive. He takes control of her by the end of the story. (This is a favorite Ben Boswell theme, and he’s a master at it)
The story is unique and impossible to predict. Incredible plot and storyline. The sex is off the charts as it develops. Choreography is stunning, as usual. Both of these writers don’t skimp on the heat.
Magnificent writing. I tried and can’t identify the writers’ different styles as it progresses.
I bought both volumes to include in my collection. This set is absolutely worth keeping.
This is not your typical hotwife/cuckold scenario. It’s not really cheating wife, either. It crosses several lines.
This series leaves us with a few added twists. They imply that Mal is smart enough to discern Meg’s submissive tendencies. He’s not a natural dominant (why Meg was drawn to him when they met. He’s very ‘laid back’.) But apparently he has taken charge of her in new ways.
THOSE NEED TO BE EXPLORED IN A FEW ADDED CHAPTERS!
By the time this series ends, the reader has grown fond of both of them and would greatly desire to see how it resolves.
A couple (with children) decide to do a trial run on having an open marriage. Communication and honesty are key ingredients, but both spouses are about 90% honest...some things are left unsaid. This book covers the initial experience for both spouses. Looking forward to the endgame. Well written, few typos. The sex scenes are well done.
Certainly an interesting concept, going from happily married couple to not caring and the consequences of their actions. There's no going back now. Looking forward to the conclusion in the next book.
I gave this a four because at last an erotic tale with two strong willed, married individuals. No excessively submissive husband. Both parties are having fun outside of the marriage. No need yet for a, hopefully, firm stand being taken by him to haul his wife into line.
Different but some times over descriptive re imaginations.I look forward to the concluding episodes, whenever they are forthcoming. It fanciful in parts.
Was not sure where this was going (Parallel LInes?) and did not see it gaining momentum for the ending Yes there is very likable MCs and an asshole to despise, however it is a good storyline that is well written.
