Desperation leads Allie Simon to do something she wouldn’t otherwise have done. A gently-bred female doesn’t offer herself to a stranger. If she does, she must be willing to accept the consequences. But what if among those consequences is one she hadn’t expected?
Nicholas Ashton knows all too well what awaits him at Waverton: marriage and the inevitable heir. He is only too happy to delay his arrival by accepting an invitation from an old friend to spend a few weeks at Groome Hall. When he is thrown (literally) into Allie’s path, he begins to suspect his hitherto calm, orderly life may never be the same.
Allie and Nicholas might be determined to forget their very unorthodox first meeting, but fate has other ideas. And when has fighting fate ever been easy?
I'm a Georgia girl at heart if not by birth. I love to read, watch college football, and spend time with my husband. I'm a hopeless romantic so there will always be a happily ever after in my stories. I also like to write about second chances because love doesn't always work out the first time.
This is an unusual regency style tale. Allie is the daughter of a gentleman whose heir evicts her from her home. she sets off in search of a former family retainer who owns an Inn. During the travel she resorts to an ancient custom of offering herself, as a bride, to the first man who crosses her path. Her small stature makes him believe she is a child and he says 'thanks but no thanks'
She goes to the Inn and repeatedly encounters this Duke; eventually ending up as the governess in the home where he is a guest. There she is subject to a sexual attack by another guest. The short tale is full of misunderstandings and miscommunication and eventually her employer insists she and the Duke be married [ Which seemed really unrealistic to me] Can these two find love in a forced marriage... who cares.
I don't usually like novellas and I somehow picked this out thinking erroneously that it was a full-length book. I did not like this story. I can't blame it all on the shortness of the book. The characters were strange and the story awkward.
I enjoyed reading about the past. Women had a harder life then than we have now. Nicholas way of treating Allie was very commendable. I enjoyed reading the way they came to know and love each other.
Reasons l liked this book 1. Although this book isn't hundred 100% accurate for the time period. It was believable. 2. I love the chemistry between the main characters 3. It was a clean book with a little bit of passion 4. Good story line about a girl that has lost her station and has know where to go and a man that doesn't want to get married because he thinks it will hold him back. 5. I love that the characters argue with each other. I found it enduring.
I think it was pretty good. The writing was well done though I do think. "Huskily" was overused. I wish there had been more character development and back story. It all happened too fast and easy. I think the author would have done well to slow down and let the story unfold a bit more naturally. However, it was a clean read and light. And the chemistry between the main characters was great. If you are in the mood for a quick romantic fix this will do it.
Cameron turns her hand to Regency romance here. A young woman of good stature has been victimized by the times and the men in her life. A chance meeting with a handsome nobleman begins another adventure for her that adds to her wretched life. It eventually ends in a better place but the young woman has nowhere to go but up.
This was a quick and sweet read. The characters were multifaceted and endearing and while the plot was not wrought with action, it held enough to pass the story pleasantly. I really enjoyed this story. I received this book free from one of the book subscription emails.
