***THIS IS A FULL LENGTH STANDALONE NOVEL WITH AN HEA***Cal Gatlin is dangerous. Cal Gatlin hates me. And now? Cal Gatlin is my stepbrother. I’ve been broken since Dad died. Crippled by pain and the secrets I keep. I’m supposed to be perfect—the good girl with the 5.0 GPA and a ticket to Harvard. The last thing I need is a sexy, dangerous, tattooed bad boy stalking me, flirting with me, and calling me Sis with a cheeky grin. Especially if that bad boy is my obsessive childhood bully. Cal Gatlin. I hate him. But now that we are forced together by our parents' marriage, our acts are breaking down. He’s seeing the weak, imperfect side of me I’ve been terrified to show to anyone. And I’m discovering the pain beneath his cocky bad boy mask. Deep down, we’re each both just as broken as the other. Loving Cal Gatlin hurts. It’s dangerous. It’s reckless. But maybe we can save each other. ___ this novel contains strong language, adult themes, and explicit sex. It is intended for readers over the age of 18.
I don’t know if this review contains spoilers, I didn’t get far enough to know.
Natalie is the most beautiful and perfect girl in the world.
Boys tell her that.
“ I think you’re incredibly beautiful… and fucking sexy.” “You have no idea what you do to men.” Actually, yes, yes she does. “ I was absolutely devastating this boy.”
But she needs to be reminded. Often
“Nat, you have no idea what you do to men... Anyone with a working cock would want you.” But actually, she knows. “He wants you, he wants you, he wants you, the voice said.”
She’s a self-absorbed little drama queen who is constantly slamming doors and locking herself in her bedroom refusing to speak to anyone. She’s in constant fear of her stepbrother for god alone knows what reason, except of course when he touches her because then she’s all-a-fucking-tingle.
“I halted as Mom and James walked out of the kitchen, blissfully unaware that their daughter was being stalked by her potential murderer. Cal’s smirk grew, and he crossed the room with wide strides. Please, God, let Mom bury me somewhere nice. “
Her actions made me want to call her mean things no woman should ever be called (no matter how hard they’re twerking along your last nerve), he’s supposed to be this cocky bad boy but he’s a stuttering tool and for my own mental health and my medication limit I am just fucking done.
Cal, he's my new book boyfriend. Yes...I'm a crazy person who falls in love with characters from books, but we all know I'm not the only one. You're probably wondering why I want him so much, well apart from the fact of being drop dead gorgeous he's also sweet, protective and he can kick some serious ass with his anger issues.
No, he is not a violent person usually. He's just very protective of Nat.
The Set-Up: In the town's eyes, high school senior Natalie Harlow is the quintessential good girl. Perfect grades, virginal pink cardigans, extra extracurriculars, and a similarly overachieving boyfriend that she hasn't gone very far with. For as long as she can remember, she's been a target of the school bully, Callum Gatlin. As much as Natalie is the good girl, Callum Gatlin is the town's bad boy. He's not just known for being a rebel, he's feared. With his blatant disregard for authority, indifference toward his education, and his penchant for violence and intimidation, both the school and the town have long chalked him up as a lost cause.
Natalie's mother has been struggling to make ends meet on their own in the years since her father's death, so when her new boyfriend James Gatlin proposes, she happily accepts. Bada-bing bada-boom, the good girl and bad boy share a bathroom and a bedroom wall. Their forced proximity exposes the truth behind each other's facade and the feelings that have been kept secret. A new relationship develops, disrupting the town's natural order of things in a dangerous way.
Thoughts: I love stepbrother stories. The plot is usually pretty similar, which makes the way it's told come to the fore a bit more, and when I find one that's really outstanding, it feels that much more satisfying. That's what makes Save Me a great read in my eyes. The story itself plays within the standard structure - stepbrother romance set in high school, enemies-to-lovers, good girl-bad boy - but the characters, the relationships, and the emotions feel fresh and authentic.
Also, that smut was spot on.
The story flowed perfectly, I thought. It was quick, concise, almost streamlined. Nevertheless, it didn't feel underdeveloped. The author managed to convey difficult situations and emotions in a believable way on surprisingly little information. She seemed to have a knack for telling me what I needed to know and sparing me what I didn't. I do still wish the book would have shown just a little more of the MCs' time together.
The emotion is what truly stood out to me in this story. It was so raw, so powerful, but it managed to avoid excessive sap or melodrama. Cal's love for Natalie was probably my favorite thing about the whole book. It was beautiful. It's heartbreaking, because whole world had given up on him, he had given up on himself, but he could still do this one thing, and that was to care for and protect Natalie. He had this quiet devotion to her.
When one character has had strong unrequited feelings, when the time for a relationship comes, it's hard to make the reciprocation believable, and it seems like the one is more into it than the other. That wasn't the case in this book.
There were some small continuity errors, nothing crazy. As a couple other reviews mentioned, the language got a touch repetitive at a couple points, but I didn't find it to be much of a problem. Mostly just that Natalie kept saying "fuck off" and needed to learn to switch it up a bit. I saw another review mention that the heroine keeps mentioning the hero's full name, which is kind of true in the beginning but there was a reason for it, she was stressing who he was in terms of his reputation. I didn't find it to be annoying or distracting at all.
I have one major criticism and that is the ending. It's the reason for the half-star i took off. I'll expand in a spoiler tagged footnote.*
Anyway, I just re-read this for kicks, and I was reminded of how great it is.
This was a good read. Was 200+ pages and a full standalone. There was a lot of errors in the book. You will be able to connect to the characters. I would read other books by this author as well as as encourage others. Overview. Natalie or aka Nat was the typical student in high school. Working hard, good grades, and popular. But her enemy, Cal, who is always in trouble and picking on her, will be her new step brother. She freaks and can't stand it. Cal loves that she will be his step sister. Cal keeps egging her on, while she is trying to be nice. That's boyfriend is jealous of her boyfriend Nate, but also knows that something bigger is wrong with Nate. Cal fights for Nat and slowly wins her heart and trust. There are several twists and turns in the story the push the boundaries of trust and saving between them.
I have to take a break from this one. It started out really good, but Cal behavior just changed a little too quickly for me. One minute Cal is a bully to Nat, the next he is the nicest guy. I am not sure why Natalie was upset that Nate found himself someone else. I thought she would be happy since he was abusing her. The book felt out of place. Characters behaviors just did not make sense.
This was an AMAZING story. I'll admit Nat bothered the hell out of me. I had to keep reminding myself she was an 18 yr old high school senior, but Cal??? The sexiest Bbf I have ever read. The smut was the sexiest I have ever read. My perverted butt highlighted way too much dialogue. This was my first Scully book, and I plan on reading others. I loved the blurbs for Blitz and some other stepbrother story she featured. She mastered how to write a hot, alpha hero with a FILTHY mouth. There are a lot of grammatical errors (gets worse as the book goes on) but I didn't find them distracting. Nat was kinda clueless, but that's where my reminder I mentioned earlier kicked in. I will say I HATED her mom and best friend. I found them both to be irritating, but if you want a fast paced, steamy as beck stepbrother romance, you have to check this out! Their story moves quickly, but we are given enough backstory to make the story believable. (Not OTT like an Alexa Riley story)
A wasted plot. This storyline had the potential to be great! But the grammar errors, the duplicate paragraphs, even a duplicate chapter in the middle of another chapter, tells you how sloppy and what minimal effort was put in this book. I'm sorry to say these things if they hurt the author, but it was not well written, it was boring, the characters were annoying, the storyline was presented in such a manner that made it difficult to read. I usually finish a book despite how bad it is, because normally there is one character in every story that I feel compelled to know what happens to them. I really tried, but o get even close to the end of the book I had to skip through most of it. I hoped ot would get better and I thought it would during the attempted kidnapping, but it just fizzled. After the hospital scene I just stopped reading, I really did not care what happened to these people and it's such a shame.
Callum and Natalie have a very strong relationship. At the beginning “Pink” (Natalie) thinks “California” (Cal) hates her. It isn’t until she seems he’s protecting her that she realizes he loves her. These two get torn apart but as Cal promised Nay, he came back for her.
This needs heavy editing done and chapters 22 and 23 are the exact same chapters. Otherwise good read.
This one has all the makings of a great tale. Perfect princess. Roguish Knight. Evil villain times two. Loving parent and trusty friend. Loved this book, Cal is absolutely sweet and totally misunderstood! Nat is a beautiful girl who has made herself believe that ignoring her authentic self will make her the loved princess that everyone admired. Loved the character development and the plot description was very well done.
If you like taboo romances you'll love this book and if you can get over the fact that the step sibs parents were only married a short time and he has been in love with her forever you'll also love this book! Overall it was a pretty good book.
First book to be read by Bella Scully. When the first page captives you, you already know its going to be a good story. Bella did not disappoint. The humor, chemistry, and tension between Cal and Natalie was amazing. Although I will admit the whole "sweetheart" thing was too much. I felt like at one point sweetheart was every other word. But in all great read
I liked this book enough to give it a five star review. The characters were good the storyline was great ... but it's got a lot of misspelled words and sentences that definitely needed edited. I'm not the greatest at punctuation , definitely not a writer but this was the wrong words in the sentence kind of thing...
I read this back when I was experimenting with New Adult romance and, considering how poorly that experiment went, this was actually a fairly decent installment. Now, my like of Save Me can be almost entirely attributed to the MC's best friend, but most new adult got a 1-star, so 2-stars is a marked improvement.
Save Me is a standalone Stepbrother romance by Bella Scully. The storyline was solid and well thought out. The twists and turns were fantastic and kept my attention from beginning to end. The characters had depth, emotion and chemistry. All in all a very solid book that I would recommend.
This book is a must read . It's amazing ,gritty ,sexy and oh so good . This book has everything and I adored it . It's the first book I've read by this author and I am definitely going to read another one soon
A must read step brother romance that you won't be able to stop reading. I read several books by this author in one weekend as I love her work and each book was addictive. I recommend all, and any, books by this author
This romance was great! The characters were well developed and the story kept me interested the whole way through. There was enough steam and Cal was the perfect book boyfriend bad boy! One chapter towards the end was a duplicate.
Not enough development for the characters for me to feel love story was legit. It also ended on them deciding happily ever after was it when Cal had no real plans for success. Not my favorite book by her
This was a great book. Going into it, I was thinking it would be just like all the other Forbidden step-brother romance, It is definitely not like your typical step-brother romance. This book has possessive MMC, fierce FMC, drama, Suspense, heartbreaking, and a roller-coaster of a ride. I definitely recommend Reading this book! Happy Reading Everyone!
This was an interesting quick read. I did enjoy it, but it wasn't my absolute favorite. There was a lot going on in this book and it felt very rushed for what the story was about and there was just so much chaos and was a bit over the top.
It was a great book it had me hooked for start to finish on the book it only to me 24 hours to read it.. That's how hooked I was.. ill be looking for more Bella scummy books..
Mmm Cal Gatlin, I'll have a dozen and keep them coming.
This is probably one of the most mature YA/NA books I've had. Great enjoyment to read. It’s basically teen erotica and my nineteen year old sister is not old enough to read it yet. Hell, I might not be mature enough to read it. But I do definitely love it.
This is the good girl gone crazy for a bad boy with a heart of gold. He also has a potty mouth with a tendency to say dirty, dirty things. And he has a reputation that only a girlfriend in love could make light of.
Oh and he has just become her brother but that is really only an issue for the sake of the whole stepbrother taboo genre, because I mean, really, getting it on with someone you are only related to by means of association is how most people get dates. Truly, the taboo is dead to me and the formula is getting tired. Perhaps we should petition for a new taboo.
Some girls try to live up to the expectations of everyone they know, they all become bitter housewives that dive into the bottom of a bottle and passive aggressively crap on everyone they think has better. I know because I'm very closely related to one. Natalie Harlow has her future bitter existence ambitiously planned out and her application to Harvard is only the first step. What she doesn't have is the stomach to deal with her nemesis and tormentor of many years move into her house.
I must admit that watching Cal wind Nat up is what makes this book so beautiful. He really is the perfectly charming douche canoe with a heart. Even when he is behaving he is still dangerous and naughty. He’s young enough to be my child but I would whole heartedly go cougar for a little one night of that sinful smexy. He’s eighteen so I am free and clear in all fifty states and most international countries. Ok, what I would want to do with him is likely illegal in all those places too.
This is really a great read, Bella Scully has a fantastic voice, her characters are tangible, and her humor is out of the world. I can't wait to snatch up all her future books.
