Actual rating 3.5 stars The first appearance of The Hand! I'm glad we got a point of view from Elektra, it helps in creating a more fleshed out character. Also that thing with Foggy was a bit underwhelming. I thought it was something REALLY bad! And it really wasn't.
Daredevil is so cool that even when he wakes up in hospital, he is wearing his shades.
Lots of good action in this issue, including a truck screeching, strategically placed crates ready to be tossed at the villains (“eh? Those crates—“) ex-villains who no longer want to fight (“I’ve lost it! I - - -aarrghh!”) and realistic sound effects (“SHRAK” “CHOK” and my favourite “KTANG!!!!!”).
This is a world where cops are still allowed to smoke cigars inside an unventilated vehicle (“shaddup. I got rights”) and where Elektra secretly helps out daredevil (“I did it. Without my radar. Alone...”).
In Europe, Elektra finds out that The Hand wants to assassinate Matt Murdock. She reluctantly heads to New York to save him while trying to convince herself that she hates him. It is later found out that the Kingpin is behind all of it.
Daredevil #174 marks the first appearance of the Hand, who put a contract out on Matt and Melvin Potter. Elektra interferes, drawing the Hand’s attention back to her own defection from the organization years earlier, complicating their efforts to go after Matt in the process. The fallout is significant: an explosion during their attack costs Daredevil his radar sense, leaving him with his enhanced senses but without the ability that arguably separates him from being just a skilled blind fighter and being a true superhero. A solid, eventful issue, nothing flashy, but nothing wrong with it either.
Matt Murdock has a contract against him, he’s struggling in Court without the help of Foggy, and Elektra is after him. He even loses his radar. Intense issue.
